Incoming mandatory closed source government ID software for the tracking device you carry in your pocket.

Thankfully.

For now..

We'll see how Palantir turns out.

"Mooted" means nearly the opposite in British English of what it does in American English. @[email protected] is saying they already started discussing it, which is a bad thing.

"Tabling" means the opposite in American English too, BTW. To "table a motion" in the US means to take it off the table, LOL!

Careful, if you continue that thought to its conclusion you're gonna end up with Esparanto or something.

Turning it on only when you're using it doesn't stop it harvesting all your Bluetooth interaction data (like covid contact tracing). That's what Android Auto does with Ford cars - the car isn't just tracking you when you drive it and reporting back to Ford, it's tracking where you go with your phone based on all the Bluetooth devices you ping.

The best solution is to just not have it. Or, if you have to have it, have it on a spare device.

That's whats awesome about the Steam Deck in comparison to something like the Switch. I have taken my Deck completely apart (because my screen broke), and all i needed were some standard tools. You can put whatever OS you want on it, you can play whatever you want with it, you can replace parts as you see fit - mine is currently waiting for the moment i have to open it up the next time, i got myself a completely transparent body for it.

That makes me think: is there a LED controller somewhere in the Steam Deck?

It especially cool that steam deck basically set the rules upon arrival:

  • Being cheap (not anymore tho) — it was two to three times cheaper than competitives
  • Providing best user experience with SteamOS — showing that UI matters on such devices
  • Being serviceable — you can easily fix or at least replace components

It's not like they was first company to present x86 handheld, but they was first one who was able to take off. I bought asus rog ally year ago (with z1extreme) and I already swapped os, nvme and sticks in it, battery will be next, cause in this model it abysmally small. And I can bet if not for stream deck, even if asus would release rog ally, it would cost x2 and repairability would basically none existent. And chance are it would have problems with linux (like their rog ally xbox version)

I replaced the battery on mine already. Only problem was that damn glue you got to melt.

Yeah, i got myself the iFixit toolkit for the screen replacement, which comes with this nice heating pad you can warm up in the microwave to loosen the glue from both the screen and the battery. Still have it, it's now in my general toolkit, because there's always something glued down nowadays.

I used a heat gun, I was still afraid to over do it and blow up the battery. Other than that, easy fix with a knock off battery as the official ones were sold out.

You can definitely open them. Closing them again would be harder…

As a guy who got a beta gmail account around a million years ago - what's a decent free email that can do as good with spam?

For sure. I'll discharge my firearm device wherever I want and pointed in whatever direction I choose. I'll run as much power as I choose through whatever antenna I want. I'll play the first 3 seconds of audio from a million tiktok videos back to back at full volume in public. I'll use my pervert glasses to record videos of little kids playing outside in public, then have Grok edit the videos so they look naked.

...hmm... wait. Idk, maybe sometimes rules ain't bad. But fuck Google trying to block installing shit.

Poor comparison. Each one of those actions directly affects other people unwillingly.

Comparison to what? The post literally says "my device, my rules" and includes government regulations in the things they disagree with. Most of those regulations exist entirely because without them people would use devices in ways that would directly impact others.

can't speak for the intent of the person who posted it in the screenshot, but based the listed entities, this seems focused on the push to control what software can be installed on a device and who can access content on those devices. Government regulations implies the Chat Control regulations in the EU

So we should all just go with your assumption on what someone in an unclear screenshotted message meant and not mine? o_O

If you click through to the source the comments and follow up discussion are all about software regulations on devices.

Try reading all the words in my post. Maybe do that before replying in angst next time. Do you think it ended with "But fuck Google trying to block installing shit." because magic coincidence?

Then don't go out and willing buy Google's, Apple's, Microsoft's, your bank's, or your government's devices, which you already know ahead of time are locked to their own rules? What makes you feel like you are entitled to this lmao you are not required to own any of those devices, if you don't like them why are you still purchasing them year on year

And if everyone agreed with you and stopped buying them things would sure change fast then, but newsflash next to nobody in the real world actually cares about this crap, hell millions of people literally buy iPhones in mass without even considering Android phones solely to continue using iOS (which Apple built and owns through a fuckton of time and money, what makes you think you're entitled to change everything about it or to be able to use it on any other random device), nobody wants a Steam Deck either they all want a Switch which is massively locked down and the same could be said for Windows and Mac over trash Loonix (OS is literally given away for free for decades and still nobody wants it XD)

Maybe build or sell your own devices or purchase one from a company that already exists which has such rules you like in place, too logical I guess though ofc rather do nothing but cry online about why the world isn't made to exactly how I want it and continue funding those who I despise lmfao surely that'll work out well, you accepted their terms and they don't owe you sheeeeet

This is such an insanely foreign perspective to me. Who gives a shit if people are "entitled" to total control over their hardware, a world where people have that control is better, so we should force companies to comply. Why would anyone care about the freedom of a multi-billion dollar corporation to fuck over their users lmao

If I started a company selling a product with my rules and you bought my product accepting my rules and then you started randomly bitching and crying to me about the rules then explain how I am suddenly the one who's the wrong, and if you could do so and force me to have losses why would I bother even starting the company to create and sell you the product you want in the first place

It's reality my friend (something 99% of users on this website seem to not be living in), if you could install literally anything on anything then you can wave goodbye to all the competition and just 1 king os that everyone flocks to and 1 king piece of hardware, would be an absolute disaster without competition and why would companies even attempt to compete in that world, you can't win customers over with good software (locked to your hardware) nor good hardware (locked to your software), most development would cease worldwide as most go bankrupt

I don't want to live in a society where the only reason people make anything is to make a profit, and don't think for-profit companies should exist. You're barking up the wrong tree with this argument, I do not care.

This is dumb. "If we restrict the behavior of corporations to literally any degree whatsoever, no one will bother to compete and we'll have to deal with monopolies."

Most industries already are controlled by monopolies 😭
