CachyOS + Niri and Noctalia (Update)

So I ditched KDE completely since my last post. What do you think of my setup so far? I tweaked it a little, including new hotkeys and software.

Environment:

  • CachyOS
  • NiriWM
  • Noctalia (custom themed)

Extra Software (some custom shortcuts made for):

  • Satty (screenshot tool)
  • Swaylock (Customized SDDM)
  • kitty
  • Adguard-cli
  • Picocrypt (CLI)
  • Namida (music player highly recommended for Linux and Android; also works on degoogled phones).

Question: Is it strange to use SDDM with Niri? Some folks switch to another DM.

Edit: added a .gif to show off the desktop better.

Hmm, interesting. I'm going to look into that for when V5 releases; thanks for the information!

I have to admit I don't understand this, and not a dig at OP this seems a long standing tradition to show a desktop

So you look at your screen like a fishtank ? I use LMDE and startup; terminal, Firefox, Nemo, Signal and a bunch of other shit. They fill up my screen, my desktops something blank from memory. ut it moght be a photo ? I am AFK and cant remember to be honest.

I run a poverty pack setup and only have 1 screen, so i use multiple workspaces and have IBKRs Desktop trader software running on one exclusively and another has bunch of other stuff and more browser windows for other projects

but heck, i cant even get the PrtScrn button on my Logitech KB to work so wtf would I know :)

I understand your point; on my other machine (experimental setup), it's all barebones, TTY only for performance.

On this rig, though (even if it's not the fastest). I have more resources to spare, so I like to have something different to stare at than my TTY setup xD.

The reason that I have this dock at the bottom is for a couple of members of this household. That way they can use my system as well. They're not used to Linux, let alone a DM like Niri. I did run KDE before, but the Niri workflow fits my needs more :)

Looks great I have a similar setup. I do use hyprland more. Niri is a little weird with floating windows. But other than that I like it.

I honestly find it more strange to use a display manager at all. ;)

Straight from the TTY, booting into a session :P

What else do you need? ;)

The next thing you're telling me is that you don't need man at all.

That would be silly! You always need the man pages.

Looks exactly like gnome with extensions?

You reached the end
