Best way to play Ultima VII?

I'm considering going through Ultima VII. I've got the GOG version that runs in DOS box, but I figured I'd check to see if there are any modern fan patches or anything that I should consider before jumping in.

Ideally I'd like a CRT shader, but I'm not sure how well that plays with DOS box.

I’m perfectly happy with the GOG version. It comes with the expansions, Black Gate and Serpent’s Isle.

AFAIK, most of the mods/cheats that existed for the game at the time should still work when copied to the appropriate directories. IIRC, there’s still stuff available for download if you go looking for it

Personally, my favorites were ultima underworld I & II, which are also available on Gog and run very well.

Oh, it looks like the PlayStation port of Underworld works with a controller. I may actually give that a go! I tried the GOG version, but I couldn't get used to the controls. I did play it back when it was released, but didn't get too far. Thanks for the rec!

I remember hours and hours and hours playing that game as a kid. Great memories. I’ve done a few playthroughs in the past few years, and the game is as great as I remember, even with the primitive graphics. I’d love for them to remake them!

Thanks for the link!

Have you played this one? I've read that it isn't feature complete, but they might have been talking about a previous version. They were specifically referring to NPCs not following a schedule like the original engine.
