Recently I answered exactly 3 calls, all local, when expecting important messages from doctors, and all 3 of them were telemarketers from India. The doctors texted me. I am regret.
If it's important they'll leave a message

What's wrong with this design?
For one it needs text to explain it, which makes the text superior to the icon. That could be ok, an icon can be as a support, but the text is so small you can barely read it. That could be ok, if you could start reading it before it becomes relevant or if you can take your time to read it. In this case the icon acts superior, but can be very confusing. For example there are two 'end call' buttons, but one ends the current call while the other ends the incoming call, you need the visually inferior element to understand the difference. Second is the meaning the big red button, which changes function once you got an incoming call (it no longer means end current call, but now means reject incoming call). You need to guess by the context what the current function is.
Exactly, the icons should be self explanatory or at least follow a consistent logic that is supplemented by the labels.
The first and third icon both show the action for the current call on the left and the incoming call on the right, but the decline button throws that out the window. It should be the opposite of the 1st button, with green on the left and red on the right, to indicate that you're staying on the current call and rejecting the incoming one.
That makes no sense. The middle button is fine as it is because it’s just to decline the incoming call and leave everything else as is. The other 2 buttons perform 2 actions, hence 2 icons on each.
The decline button is visually inconsistent with the design of the other two buttons, which show how both the current and incoming call are each affected.
The decline button is also in the same position as the end call button normally would be and uses the same icon, which invites further confusion especially for the less technically competent.
Differentiating the design of the decline button to be visually distinct from the end call button and align with the design language of the other two buttons would improve the user experience in this situation.
The decline button only performs one action, which is why it only has one icon.
It is visually consistent with the incoming call screen that every iPhone user knows. When you are on a call and another call comes in, you get the incoming call screen - not the existing call screen, which has completely different buttons like the number pad and speaker phone etc.
I think that’s where the confusion is coming from for most people - they don’t use iPhones and they don’t know what the “incoming call” screen and the “currently in a call” screens look like.
When you do, you see why this isn’t an issue.
I see your reasoning here, but if I get a call I don’t want - whether or not I’m in another call already - I’m gonna find and click the big red “fuck off” button ASAP. IMO this is the most time-sensitive (and kinda default) operation, so it should have the larger and visibly different button
You could make it big and still in the middle, but keep the pattern the same like the person suggests
That pattern would be wrong though, as the green phone icon means answer the call.

The middle button is currently ambiguous, as it is the same signal for hanging up (horizontal phone). When i have seen that (rarely have i ever), i have not wanted to hang up on the existing call, so i haven't pressed it.
It is and it isn’t. Currently, even on a single call, it is both the decline button and the hang up/end call button. People on iPhones are used to this as it is how it has worked forever.
When a call comes in while you’re on a call, the screen is essentially the “new incoming call” screen - it shows the incoming callers ID, and has the ability to answer with actions performed on your current call, and to decline the call. It follows the existing pattern and behaviour. It also says “decline call” underneath it, to get rid of any ambiguity.
I honestly don’t see a better, more clear way of doing this ui. You would rarely want to do an “end current call, and decline incoming call”, so having 2 red phone icons wouldn’t make sense. There’s never been an icon to “continue call” so adding one just for this situation would be more confusing.
It should be a play button in the back left (opposite of the pause), and the bigger hang up button as shown.
As it is, the dismiss button looks exactly the same as the end call button does in an uninterrupted call, and without reading the labels, there’s a very real confusion that it will end the current call, just like that button normally would.
What does decline do? Decline current or incoming call?
How could you decline a call that you already answered?

“End and accept” will end the current call and accept the new one.
How to decline current and then ignore incoming?
I’m not sure if this is an “English as a second language” thing, but you can’t decline a call that you’ve already answered. You would end/finish/hang up.
Decline means to say “no I don’t want to answer”.
Yeah that might be the only option not available here - to end the current call without accepting or declining the new one.
Does it take you more than a few seconds to figure out?
These are all options I might want to have if someone calls while I'm already on a call. What would you suggest instead?
I think it’s confusing because A) you don’t see this screen very often unless you are on the phone a lot with incoming calls and B) two options have the hangup option but they refer to hanging up different calls.
I think this could be improved by changing the text on left option to “Hangup & Accept Incoming.” Change the middle to “Decline Incoming” and so on.
It’s implied of course but multiple buttons having the same hangup symbol with different meanings is part of the reason people struggle with this. That and you encounter it unexpectedly while already focused on a phone conversation so your attention is divided.
They get a busy tone and I get notified once I'm finished.

I guess you're in a call and get an other call. Your options are:
End call one, accept the new call
Decline the new call
Put call one on hold and accept the new call
This is correct. And the larger option is what will happen if you do nothing
This UI seems... fine? Those are the three reasonable options, and the UI reasonably presents them. Am I missing the joke?

A call came in when you're already on a call and the phone gave you 3 straightforward options.
iOS isn't that usable and I am legitimately qualified to comment on interfaces.
I was recently trying to set some stuff up on my kids iPad. It infuriated me to no end trying to use it, until I started to act like a boomer using a new device, then it a started to work itself out. You can't just quickly go through things to get it done, you have to slow down and watch all pretty animations and move your fingers like you have arthritis and your brain works at that same speed.
Things get better when you're in settings, but God damn it's still like a Fisher Price toy for adults.
I found it very easy to use and I’m a first gen android adopter, did custom roms on all my phones, the works.
I tried my partner’s new iPhone 4 and fell in love. I’m used to gestures for everything since switching to Opera in the early 00s when they implemented mouse gestures, so memorizing gestures for everything was easy.
I don’t feel it’s over-animated at all. It feels very natural for me to navigate and I love it. I don’t have to fuck around with bootloaders or custom roms and they last like five years. Our iPad Pro is like seven years old and beats the shit out of a shitty laggy Wacom tablet for art.
I wish the file explorer was better, that would be a boon for me and navigating my servers, but most of the stuff I do on the iPad or iPhone is simple enough, and airdrop is even easier than saving something to my servers to transfer to another machine (I don’t use cloud services.)
The only thing I dislike about this is that the end call button is in the same spot as the decline call button. So if you mean to decline the new call, but you accidentally double tab and now you’ve hung up on your 40 minute hold.
As a lifetime android user, for me it is much easier to understand how to use the crappiest of the chinese vision on how the mobile ui should look like, then understand "why i cant swipe screen edge to go back"?
That is an iPhone feature though. If for example you're in a text chat you can swipe back to the full list of text chats. Same with navigating in their browser. It's been like that for quite a while. I think almost since they dropped skeuomorphism, but that may be incorrect.

The phone functionality of the iPhone is not great.
If your phone rings, and you want to reject the call, the only option is to slide to answer the call. There is only that one control on the whole big screen, they didn’t find place for a second, red button or slider to reject the call. At least in the screenshot, apparently when you’re in another call, at least there’s a decline option.
IIRC pressing the power button once silences the call (but doesn’t reject it) and pressing it again rejects the call.
Also if the phone is already unlocked, there’s a button to decline. I don’t know why it doesn’t appear when the phone is locked.
in the lockscreen call ui (the one that’s full screen), you can also press the power button to decline
not the most intuitive thing ever but you don’t have to pick up the call just to decline afterwards
And if you don't want the other party to know you're ignoring the call but also want the vibrating to stop, use the volume buttons.
Theoretically that's only if it's coming in while The phone is locked so you don't accidentally answer or ignore it while trying to fish your phone out of your bag or pocket. If you have a call come in while using it there is a separate button. As the other commenter said, you can technically still press the side button to ignore a call, but I get that it doesn't address your issue.
