Read the public polling. An extremist is someone that does something that only a small sliver of the public would support, but the genocide has pretty broad support among the Israeli public. Calling it extremism hides that reality.
And, yes, "extremism" can simply mean "violent" in a journalistic context, but there are natural implications.
