Ritchie Torres voted for a Republican-backed bill blocking federal funding to universities that divest from Israel
Ritchie Torres was one of 33 Democrats to vote for a Republican-backed bill blocking federal funding to universities that divest from Israel’s genocide.
I’m on the ballot against Ritchie Torres in November because the Bronx deserves leaders who will fight to fully fund our education, not war and genocide.

Larry Silverstein leased Twin Towers 6 weeks before 9/11, now rebuilding amid lawsuits and criticism
Haaretz 2001 profile: Silverstein signed a 99-year lease on the Twin Towers on July 24, 2001, paying $3.2 billion. Six weeks later, the towers collapsed. He lost four staff members and survived only because a meeting on the 88th floor was canceled. He now pays $100 million annually to the Port Authority while receiving no rent. He insured the towers for $3.5 billion but claims two separate attacks justify $7 billion. Insurers say it was one event and will pay only $3.5 billion. He faces negligence lawsuits after the south tower's PA system told workers to return to their desks, killing those who obeyed. He is also criticized for rushing to rebuild. Silverstein has close ties to Israeli leaders including Sharon, Netanyahu and Barak, and spent a decade pushing a free-trade zone in the Negev that ultimately failed. He told the Jerusalem Post: 'Don't try to do business in Israel... you'll get killed.'

After what happened, the count took two hours and 23 minutes. Draw your own conclusions,” one female guard wrote to her partner, who was also a guard. “They’re doing CPR in the clinic right now, baby! God willing, that son of a thousand whores will die.” Another guard sent an excited update: “Holy shit, what a count. We fucked them up so bad.” A third texted a friend: “What an insane count. There’s never been anything like it. We poured cheese on them, cracked some eggs [the Hebrew word for eggs is also slang for testicles]. So much blood in the wings.” She then added: “OMG, they’re doing CPR on a prisoner because we beat him. He’s dead. Listen, it’s funny how it all happened in an instant: Boom, count. Boom, dead prisoner.” Abu Asab was a Fatah member serving a 25-year sentence for attacks against Israel. He was pronounced dead at Soroka Medical Center in Be’er Sheva after being taken there that evening. The indictment says the severe beating injured his heart and caused his death. Last week, nearly three years after Abu Asab was killed, prosecutors filed a rare indictment against 12 Israel Prison Service guards. They are accused of beating him and eight other Palestinian prisoners in Cell 6 of Wing 24 at Ketziot Prison as retaliation for reports that Druze soldiers had been killed in the war. Those reports turned out to be nothing more than a rumor, Haaretz reported. The assault began after Abu Asab asked a guard whether there was a ceasefire. A prisoner told investigators that approximately 15 guards and 15 members of the prison’s Keter tactical unit entered while the prisoners were kneeling with their hands over their heads and faces down. They beat everyone with batons for approximately five minutes, later unleashed dogs and shouted, “No ceasefire.” Abu Asab was beaten the worst. Witnesses said he was left unconscious and bleeding, his face blue and his hands covered in blood. The investigation also uncovered evidence that such violence was routine, known to senior commanders and concealed through a code of silence. Because prosecutors said they could not establish which guards delivered the fatal blows, the 12 who entered the cell were charged with the relatively lenient offense of reckless homicide. Female guards who stood at the cell entrance were questioned as suspects but not indicted. The female Prison Guard whose texts are shared above was highlighted in an advertisement by Israeli authorities :

Secret systems used by Israel in mass killings of Gaza civilians revealed in new film | Israel
Testimony from 24 Israeli military insiders on the secret systems used in the war on Gaza has been revealed in a new documentary film about the mass killing of Palestinian civilians. NAZA, a film from the Oscar-winning Israeli directors Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, was shown at the Venice international film festival on Thursday as the only documentary competing for its prestigious Golden Lion award. The film’s title comes from an Israeli military acronym used euphemistically to refer to civilians expected to be killed in a military attack. Produced by the Guardian, it features extensive testimony from Israeli intelligence officers and soldiers involved in the surveillance and remote killing of Palestinian civilians. Interviews were filmed at night on rooftops in Tel Aviv, on the condition of anonymity because of the risks involved in speaking publicly about Israel’s war activities. The appearance and voices of participants in the film were digitally altered to disguise their identities. The interviewees detail the secret methods used by the Israeli military in Gaza, including AI-based systems built to identify large numbers of potential low-ranking Hamas targets, who were then bombed in their homes at night, in the knowledge attacks would also kill their families. The Israeli military hacked into phones to identify the location of such targets, and covertly listened into conversations with their wives and children moments before they were all killed. The film also features first-person accounts about the destruction of neighbourhoods where the Israeli military estimated that up to 25% of residents were still sheltering in their homes, the systematic burning of civilian homes, and the killing of civilians at a food distribution site. Several interviewees worked in a secret intelligence unit that reports directly to the office of Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu; one said their mission was to “thwart peace”. “We made this film out of a sense of obligation to use our position as Israeli film-makers and journalists to examine the systems behind the mass killing of Palestinian civilians for which our country is responsible,” Abraham and Szor said in their directors’ statement.

Greece picked a no-bid Israeli defense deal over European alternatives
POLITICO wrote that Greece signed a €3 billion defense deal with Israel, called Achilles Shield. It was given directly to Israeli firms, with no competing bids. Even EU procurement rules normally wants open competition. The deal includes sensors, interceptors, surveillance tech, and more.
EU says it wants strategic autonomy. But if Greece skips European alternatives and locks itself into Israeli systems, it is not getting sovereignty. It is just replacing one dependency with another. This time on a non-EU state whose conduct in Gaza is under International Court of Justice scrutiny, and whose defense industry is not accountable to EU rules. bypass EU procurement rules and make European defense industry weaker.
And this is not only Greece. Same pattern show up across Europe: Netherlands €25m direct award to Elbit, Spain: €1.17m direct award to Rafael, Denmark: €6.5m direct award to Elbit Systems Deutschland
If we criticize Hungary for rely on Russia, we should ask why Greece and others are deepening reliance on Israel. European money should build European capabilities, not outsource them to a state accused of war crimes and genocide.
