Rad!

I haven't been clued into the death metal scene for about a decade. I felt like a lot of production trends at the time were leaning towards sounding to clean and overproduced. My metal listening, lately, has been a lot of leftist black metal, which I'm glad is finally a thing.

Anyway, does anyone have any good death metal recommendations?

Yes!

Phobopholic (Enveloping Absurdity)

Psycroptic (no particular album)

Revocation (Existence is Futile/New Gods, New Masters)

Undergang (Undhentet af Døden) (if you like some/any of this album their Split EP is cool too if I remember correctly)

Edit: please recommend me 2 of your favourite leftist black albums and 2 of your favourite Death Metal albums

Some of my favs are:
Feminazgûl
Ancst (more crust than DM, but still a good time)
Panopticon (black metal that likes to assimilate other genres, like bluegrass and jazz)
White Ward (Ukrainian; not exactly leftist, but one of my favs. They like to blend black metal with dark/doom jazz)
Sankara
Zealotry

The pictured albums (roughly from left to right, left column first):

Entombed - Left Hand Path

Edge of Sanity - Unorthodox

Kaamos - Kaamos

Cemetary - An Evil Shade of Grey

Bloodbath - Resurrection Through Carnage

Carnage - Dark Recollections

Hypocrisy - Osculum Obscenum

Merciless - The Awakening

At the Gates - The Red in the Sky Is Ours

Opeth - Morningrise

Necrophobic - Darkside

Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh

Eucharist - A Velvet Creation

Edge of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow

Grave - Into the Grave

Seance - Fornever Laid to Rest

Dismember - Massive Killing Capacity

Nihilist - (1987-1999)

And I don't know the last one. Fuck, I fell at the last hurdle. I'll blame the fact that it's cut in half.

(one of?) the Entombed singers hanged out with us in a café in Vöxjö in the early nineties.

Mroooo wroooo roooooo!

I was told (IIRC) it was speed trash death metal.

I have absolutely no idea if anything of this is true.

Unleashed - Shadows in the Deep

Damn - I'm used to the version with the less saturated band logo.

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Yissss

I got to a show late one time, and I was so dejected when I got there and Mikael said “We are going to play two more songs for you tonight.”

I left over 40 minutes later, after the two songs+two encore songs, not at all disappointed.

Another time, they came back out for encore songs and for the final song, he says

“BLACK

::: spoiler ROSE… hahahaha i am kidding here is Demon of the Fall though” :::

Love them so much.

I think it was at the Red Rocks show he told the story about meeting Ronny James Dio, and he was like, I was so fucking starstruck, and Dio was like, no I'm fucking starstruck. Great l stuff.

Depends wildly on what type of death metal you prefer. There are some more classic death recs from Sweden, particularly Entombed, but Sweden is most popular for developing melodic death. At The Gates and In Flames are the one-two punch for getting into the melodic death sub genre. Soilwork is even more approachable, sort of the bridge to death core in some ways.

Amon Amarth is a little bit of classic, a little melodic, a little black metal, and a little symphonic.

People will argue with me that Opeth is melodic, but they basically are in a different way, and more progressive than anything, especially these days.
