Is the "range gain" due to bigger batteries or actual efficiency gains i.e. improved kWh/100km?
Mostly due to bigger batteries.
Efficiency gains are more limited than increase of battery size is.
Yes, but it is misleading to call it "efficiency". Efficiancy is kWh/km
You're right.
The only area in which I'd find the term effficiency with relation to battery size appropriate: "travel time efficiency".
With bigger batteries you need less stops to recharge (if any) for trips that require stops with a smaller battery.
But even that is a stretch.
If you pick the right car, charging speed gains are even more impressive.
