A chart of how Xbox Games Studios became the largest publisher in the gaming space.

Yeah, I did just finish this last week. FML.

Edit: Due to the size it might look low quality depending on your client. Recommended downloading it or viewing in a browser.

Eh, to be honest the rumours of studio closures where what made me want to get a sense of how big Xbox was and how it got there.

When you look at it like this, you kinda see how things got so bloated. It's hard to imagine MS actually imagining they could keep all those plates spinning at once.

I'm just glad studios are going independent or being sold, rather than shut down outright.

Really interesting chart.

Would probably take a lot of effort, but it'd be neat to illustrate which IP also came in with the various studios that were acquired as well. Or show homegrown IP in addition to homegrown studios.

I considered it. I wish I knew how to program so I could make something interactive, so you could switch between layers to fit in more info without making it bloated and confusing.

I do plan on expanding it to show all the other major publishers as well, working on Sony right now.

About double the size, in terms of active studios.

Yeah. They'd be closer if it weren't for EAs habit of shutting down the studios they buy.

Activision Blizzard was 2008? Fuuuck
For those who don't know, Activision and Blizzard games were subject to several ethical issues in the workplace, being soulsucking giant publishers, but the merger only compounded the problems and everyone below executive and white status gets royally fucked over.

And by “ethical issues in the workplace” you mean rapes and suicide level of bad.

Man freelancer was THE shit. I loved that game as a kid.

All the money being poured into Star Citizen makes me wish Microsoft realized the demand for games in the genre and gave Freelancer a proper AAA remaster (and sequel if successful), but the fan-made Freelancer HD Edition does at least modernize the game somewhat.
