They do it because they themselves treat people differently based on if they are a part of the in group or not and don't want anyone mistaken them for the out group.
I have to occasionally remind myself that some awful people go to church for the same reason sick people go to hospital. They can tell there's something not right.
Building entire religion on idea that no matter what you do, god will forgive you and allow you into paradise if you only confess your crimes to the right institution, may have been a bad idea.
