Finally finished sock one
Now for sock two. The hardest thing in knitting. Afterthought heel. No real pattern was used but I did write it down as I made it so I can repeat it.
I'm tired of buying socks that blow out after a week. I have been hoarding discount sock yarn for years and it's time get it used so I can repair instead of toss.

My mother made so many knitted socks! I never really liked knitting in the round so I haven't made any.
Also she hated the heels so they scare me lol
Heals can be completed. I settled on the afterthought as my favorite for daily use socks. It's the easiest by far. But it does leave a tiny little hole on each side. Which is why I don't use it for free socks like I would wear with a kilt. If I'm going to spend two weeks doing cabling I'll use a more traditional heel.
I prefer DPNs for knitting in the round for small things like socks. But that gets tangled when doing a larger project like a sweater. For that I want a cabled needle.
I'm always scared the double points are going to go SLOOP and slip into nowhere. They won't, but my brain still gets worried. I have done projects on them, there were these like...knitted stuffed mice we made for the cats. Cats looooved them. Lost the pattern though.
If that's a fear then get bamboo needles instead of metal ones. Makes a huge difference. I kinda wish I had some size 1 bamboos. Normally the metal ones don't slip but if I'm doing surgery with just one to three stitches on a needle it might.
All of the ones I have are wooden in some form, cause the metal makes my hands sad! It's silly brain things.
Knit them on the same needles in pairs and then they are done at the same time at the cost of only SOME of your sanity
I prefer DPNs and dual sockig can only be done on cabled needles.
If you have long enough straight needles you can double knit two socks side by side (both layers are knit at the same time and separate socks are produced side by side) it is complicated but doable. No, it isnt simple, but it can be fun for those who like complex things and can not be arsed to knit the second sock
Ironically, the needles only need to be about . . . A foot long
Footlong size 1 needles sounds like a recipe for bent or broken needles.
Ok size 1 is wild but i bet your socks are much more comfortable than mine. Now i am jealous.
I only want the tightest knit on my socks. So size 1 all the time.

I don't know if I could afford that. Last night I gathered all my available sock yarn that I have hoarded from thrift shops over the years. Some really low quality stuff. But it's sock yarn that cost me almost nothing. To go exclusively hand made. I'd have to use real money.
I pulled out my next yarn. This morning: Wife "WTF is wrong with that yarn?" Me "it's Red Heart. That's just one of three problems it has."

I've never done simple socks before so they feel underwhelming. Normally I have done kilt socks with all kinds of cabling. This feels like a minimum viable project compared to what I'm used to.
I still think they look great :)
Finished the second sock. I might redo the heel and the toe but it's a functional sock for now.
What kind of sock only lasts a week? I can't get rid of the damned things.
