Funnily enough fascism and fasciation come from the same Latin word of "fascis" meaning "bundle". The symbol of fascism is a bundle of sticks usually with an axe called a fascis. It's to signify authority and power, specifically in ancient Rome where modern fascists pulled it from. In fasciation, fascia or bundle/band refers too the elongated and flattened growth patters of the plant.
