IIRC from my junior high days of being on the basketball team, If the ball is in your possession, you need to dribble it while moving. If you ever put BOTH hands on it any time after receiving a pass (catching a pass with both hands is okay), you can no longer take a step (you may pivot but not take a step) even if you dribble it; you have to shoot or pass.
It’s one of the most arbitrarily applied rules in all of sports. It depends on the opinion the referee holds of the individual player. Do not try to make sense of it and you’ll have a lot more fun
Ok let's get down to semantics. I dribbled the ball before i threw it and it came back? Can I now more with the ball all over again while dribling or still stuck in the space I was at when I slung the ball?
No. Unless it was a shot at the basket. Some leagues require you to at least hit the backboard. But you need to lose possession of the ball first, throwing it in the air and catching it elsewhere is a travel. Or throwing in the air and catching in place does not allow dribbling again.

To add to this, I'm pretty sure throwing it at the backboard would count as losing possession, so you could dribble again afterwards.
Yeah, maybe I should reword that. Taking possession with both hands is okay, no matter how you gain possession afaik. Rebounds, steals, etc.
