Casual Friday: Scott McCloud examines emotional states and facial expressions (full chart incl.)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Making_Comics

As with its two predecessors ("Understanding Comics" and "Reinventing Comics"), Making Comics is itself in comic book form, with McCloud's avatar leading the reader through the pages. The book details the processes behind storytelling, character design, and other challenges specific to the medium, with illustrative examples drawn from the history of comics. Complex topics are frequently boiled down to a few principles, such as classifying cartoonists into four types, or identifying the "six basic emotions".

The cropped pic above is just me fooling around with some online tools & GIMP. The faces look kinda like traditional theatre masks, so I just rolled with that. Here's the full diagram page, which I upscaled with "Waifu2" (very good for comic art):

This is cool! It's a great breakdown and i can connect emotionally with a couple of those

The disgust and joy reminds me of when I worked in a warehouse cleaning totes that went to stores, sat around in who-knows-what conditions, and eventually made their way back to us. We found indescribable masses, piss, shit, inch thick layers of dead bugs because they were kept under the bug-light (they have a slightly nutty and roasted taste. Wouldn't be too unpleasant if it hadn't been a mouth and nose full of bug dust when I lifted up the tote above it) and whenever we'd find an exceptionally nasty thing, we'd say, "hey this is so nasty; wanna see/smell it?!" And invariably coworkers would go "yeah!" and have the same face as the meme when seeing/smelling said nastiness. It was so fun, us humans are so weird

The other one tears at my heartstrings is devastated. That is the same face my kiddo made when they misunderstood me and thought I was leaving again to go back to work right after I had gotten home and that look will haunt me forever. Absolutely gut wrenching memory

Is it this kind of “tote” ? « (logistics) A kind of plastic box used for transporting goods. » I didn’t know that meaning, for me a tote was just a simple bag made out of fabric.

Eeww indeed...

Yeah, sorry. It's common parlance because I'm "in the industry"

It's like this:

They stack inside each other when the flaps are open

No need to be sorry. I’m not a native English speaker, so it’s not surprising that I wouldn’t know. And it’s always nice to learn a new word.

I’ve actually used this kind of boxes at work in the past, but have no idea if there’s a specific word for them in French.

Wow, that was a load of info I wasn't quite anticipating. XD

No doubt, although my theory (which is forming out of reading the book "Sapiens") is that however weird we natively might be, we got mondo-gonzo weird when we chose the path of agriculture and civilisation, with its emphasis on property, hierarchy, technology and the loose idea that we can do whatever we want to the earth without serious consequences. Heh, but that's kind of a fraught concept that deserves it's own posting at some point.

Sapiens btw got turned in to a graphic novel, so it's ripe to be shared here. I did actually share a smidgen already, but that's really just the tip of the massive iceberg.

Absolutely gut wrenching memory

Damn, yeah that's not a face I'd ever want to see on a kiddo outside of them just throwing a tantrum or something.

I use these graphics in more than one class. Excellent for ESL classes and also business lessons like marketing. They've been saving my butt for the last 15 years!

You reached the end
