I think it works when you consider two things-- 1) that this is a 'throwaway side-project' for Bolling, whose juggernaut of course is Tom the Dancing Bug, and 2) that like Heathcliff and various others, it's an intentional subversion of the 'classic comics format,' and regularly experiments with ways in which to unfold panels & mine humor.
