Somehow tourists don't like the prospect of potentially ending up in a concentration camp...

Its not going to matter.

Every stadium will be packed come game time.

With whom? Americans are just confused if people actually play football with their feet.

6

lemmy.world

Ahhh yes, American Football, the game where you generally throw the ball.

4

Considering an average MLS game has an attendance around 22k im not sure you understand what you are attempting to dunk on.

But i get it, america dumb and what not. Meanwhile, quatar built their stadiums with slave labor, averaging 2 slave deaths a day on certain projects and every game was packed to the fucking gills.

Live in reality.

What, making yourself an international pariah and also actively being hostile towards anyone who even just looks foreign who's in your borders is not good for tourism? Who could've guessed? I'm sure that spiking oil prices will fix it right

lemmy.world

Well no shit. Who wants to disclose their entire lives to a fascist government, and then be at the absolute mercy of a bunch of homeschooled ICE morons?

51

Who wants to disclose their entire lives to a fascist government, and then be at the absolute mercy of a bunch of homeschooled ICE morons?

This is basically the devil's bargain all those Qatari social media influencers made

3

If they were homeschooled, they'd probably be better off.

Even when the world cup was in my country I didn't go to any matches. Not that I could afford it, but even if I could I still wouldn't have gone.
This time I won't even watch it on the TV. That's how much I dislike that fat cunt paedo and his regime.

(I also didn't watch it when it was in Qatar.)

46
infosec.pub

I haven’t watched international soccer since they awarded Russia and Qatar with the World Cup. Fucking corrupt pieces of shit supporting the worst people.

35

Fifa is just getting more corrupt too. They are really leaning into it, even after the last president or whatever had to step down because of it.

Really makes me wonder who they'll find to host the next World Cup.

Afghanistan, perhaps?

9
lemmy.dbzer0.com

Maybe Argentina?

If Milei hasn't rendered it insolvent in time for the next host picking process, that is.

8
feddit.org

Guess where they'll build the stadiums... I heard they currently have a huge area of land paved flat

6

Exactly

And they might even have lots of cheap labor from people that are starving

2

omg. that is so antisemitic! HOW DARE YOU?!

::: spoiler spoiler /s :::

1

Fuck… can I bet on this on Kalshi or whatever, it’s for sure gonna happen now and I might as well get in early

2

Italy getting repeatedly eliminated from the world cup is one of the best things that happened to this country in the last years

11
piefed.social

I won’t even watch it on the TV. That’s how much I dislike that fat cunt paedo

Not watching soccer on TV isn't the anti-fascist resistance flex you think it is.

-21
lemmy.dbzer0.com

Boycotts matter. Advertisers spend a lot of money on air time and they know when they're not getting a return on views.

20
piefed.social

Yes, boycotts matter. Real boycotts, like the Montgomery bus boycott that lasted for months and truly hurt the recipient financially - what MLK called "economic withdrawal".

Punctual boycotts like buying nothing for one day, or not watching something on TV, are just feel-good stuff that actually achieve nothing at all.

Also, I will point out that it took a lot more than not listening to Hitler's speeches on the radio to defeat him.

So yeah, do not watch the matches if it makes you feel better. But it won't change a damn thing.

-6
lemmy.world

Well thank god we have heroes like you to remind us that our minor acts of resistance are completely pointless. God forbid we build up to anything 🙄

10
piefed.social

Minor acts of resistance aren't pointless: pointless acts of resistance are pointless.

-10

You shouldn’t watch anything put on by that org FIFA. Doesn’t really matter how little it does.

5
Aulireply

Well it isn't the worlds problem. America isn't doing anything for itself why would we do anything.

1
DagwoodIIIreply
piefed.social

No it isn't.

There are plenty of people who are going to lose money and/or jobs because of this. Trump and his cronies aren't going to be hurt.

Don't celebrate hotel maids and servers getting screwed

-31
MagicShelreply
lemmy.zip

The reason hotel maids and bartenders will be hurt is because the CEO's made leveraged bets and are losing their asses. That's not the fault of consumers who choose not to spend, that's the fault of the wealthy.

Or let me put it another way: I don't owe those workers to make their boss rich so he pisses a little of that wealth onto them. I would much rather provide a social safety net to help them out when their boss loses money being a prick.

30
lemmy.world

I would much rather provide a social safety net

Good news, you're doing NEITHER.

-4
MagicShelreply
lemmy.zip

Well I'm sure as fuck not going to feel morally obligated to provide the wealthy even more profit in either case, so that's actually moot. But if we're going to worry about the plight of the common man, let's go about it the right way.

8
lemmy.world

The delusion that literally every employer is a billionaire is fucking embarrassing.

let’s go about it the right way.

By deluding yourself into thinking a business of any size is the same as mega corporations and doing nothing else. Good work.

-4

Where do you even read the word "billionaire"? What are you talking about?

3
Count042reply
lemmy.ml

Let me guess, if someone is held hostage for a ransom, and the ransom isn't paid, and the hostage is killed, you blame the person that didn't pay instead of the kidnapper?

Literally the same moral logic.

In other words, you realize I'm right and don't have the stomach to admit it, so you double down on cheap insults.

Go ahead, explain why celebrating wage earners bad luck is a great thing.

2

Well, the guy I responded to didn't answer so it looks like I was right.

And by your logic, the people who got A-bombed in Hiroshima deserved it because they didn't rise up against the Emperor.

I'm impressed by your compassion

This should be the worst sporting event ever. 1936 Olympics should be a shining star in comparison.

Fascism was celebrated in 1936 Olympics so it is being celebrated in this World Cup. It was however Jesse Owens who is remembered about 1936. I can't find any examples this time around.

Does Cuba have a team in it?

Would be nice to see them beat the US team in the last round on US soil.

3

No, they didn't qualify. They did qualify for the "youth" version, but that's later and in Qatar.

But if you have to go to the US at least do not spend your money in red states.

Canadian businesses are greedy also and from what I understand there is a shortage of bookings due to price. I heard they'll be charging $80+ for parking at BMO field. Offensive.

4
Aulireply

Yep andblits of our businesses are American.

2

Money talks, bullshit walks.

We'll see what happens when this starts hitting the bottom line of big businesses.

10

Exactly they're so disappointed but they didn't lower prices so a lifelong soccer fan with an average income like myself can afford to go. The way prices are right now, it's simply not an option, i couldn't afford it on a credit card even if i was willing to ruin my finances!

5

At the end of the day the fans supporting their teams get screwed the most.

5

Which infantino is this cluster fuck going to get blamed on more?
