Spicing up the 20 y/o GTS 250
Been on this thing for 10.000 kilometers and no idea how much the previous pilot put on the belt: time for new belt, and let's pop in a Malossi Delta Clutch while the beetle's backside is suitably exposed. That's on the books for Wednesday.
Would love to hear experiences on the clutch on stock settings and springs if we have CVT enjoyers among us 😊
Not a huge fan of CVTs, but admittedly my experience was limited to renting one for a few days. There were some uphill dirt roads I had to go on in the rain, it required me to do drift turns like an absolute maniac to keep the rpms up and maintain momentum.
Putting a racing clutch on a CVT seems counter-intuitive, isn't it going to make that jerk when the clutch engages worse? Seems like a waste of the CVT's smooth power delivery.
This turned out to be a great move: on stock settings the net effect is a tiny bit more revs needed to engage the clutch. It still engages super smooth, I can still walk the bike up a ramp just giving it a little bit of throttle. My Vespa has a little bit of trouble idling cold, but with the extra play I can keep the revs up manually easier.
The Malossi clutch is bound to run cooler, as it's got air scoops and more thermal mass than the original. This was why I wanted to try it out. Should be better for long rides at speed.
