For the less technical, this is why we can lose instances (lemmy.sdf.org is the most recent one I noticed), but the fediverse will never go away: the fediverse is protocol-based (ActivityPub) like email.

Ah that's awesome, thanks for letting me know. I post to their Seattle community instead of the one on lemmy.world because I prefer to move things off default instances, so I'm excited to get back on my "posting stuff to communities no-one frequents" bullshit.
