Jamaica is functionally a captive state. The police and the legislature are fully captured by foreign corporate interests. The public is held in poverty to extract their labor on the cheap.

Emigration from Jamaica is currently at a critical high, with over half of the population (54%) planning an attempt to leave within the next three years.

The whole Caribbean is under the yoke of repressive governments operating perpetually contracting local economies to support the tourist sector. But as a British Commonwealth (functionally little more than a colony) they don't even enjoy a relationship to a prosperous mainland to backstop their atrocious domestic economic policy.

At least now, the issue will get more attention than it would have otherwise. On the bright side, she is now a contestant for most ironic death of the year.

There is no "bright" side to this. No "at least". And this is a story about a real human being, not an entertainment piece to draw irony from.

Police should behave responsibly. The protest shouldn’t have had to happen in the first place. We can all agree on that.

The world is so fucked up that I HAVE to look for the “at least” and “bright” things, otherwise I’ll go insane. Some of us joke about serious things. Some of us rely on other methods. Either way, facing the enormity of the horrors surrounding us without any kind of coping mechanism is just too much.

By all means step away and take good care of yourself when it gets too intense. It's necessary at times. But comments like that just don't belong here. We can't ask victims to help us derail their stories so we can process our difficulties reading them. Let's keep this about them and not make it about ourselves.

I’m not new to the internet yet even after all these years it feels weird to upload something that should be infuriating

Are you suggesting this isnt news because the country is small and not very important on a geopolitical level?

It always frustrates me when my relatives watch TV news that favors substantial coverage of inconsequential local stories in the U.S. over more significant events internationally.

Jamaica isn't the part of the US. What're you talking about?

The comment I replied to was criticizing the parent comment for stating that this event isn't consequential to an international audience.

My reflection was that I wish national news programs included more international content rather than focusing on trivial stories with no broad impact they probably pick up from social media.

Rules only say that news should not be US internal news. Jamaica internal news are fine.
