This is absolutely going to be a center for mandatory disfigurement of trans people of all ages.

Fucking horrific.

Trying to bankrupt a children's hospital because you've decided to launch a transgender witchhunt is comic book levels of evil.

1% of the US identified as trans and 1% of people who transition want to go back.

This is going to be a “clinic” for a 1-3 kids who decided to stop puberty blockers. And the free clinic will basically be “we’ll wave the $30 copay on a call with a doctor or therapist.”

These politicians love to fixate on ragebate issues that don’t actually change the lives of their constituents for the better.

Like I said in another thread, this is going to be a black hole where you toss unwanted trans kids, to either rot and die, or get trafficked, or both.

22

They are not required to create some sort of inpatient trans kid gulag.

The “clinic” requirement state that doctor’s need to help kids who are getting off of hormone blockers - which any good hospital would do anyway for anyone doing a big medication switch. That’s standard care.

They also apparently are required to pay to reverse surgical procedures if someone asks. Which would be never or rarely, because doctors / parents almost always delay puberty until a someone if old enough to decide about surgery.

The clinic is dumb bullshit that won’t be a real thing. The real impact is the 10 million fine, firing five physicians who previously provided care, and ceasing performing puberty blockers. That’s the shit that’s really fucked up.

Also if you look at the reasons for why that 1% detransitions, it is primarily because of discrimination. The number of people who genuinely decide that being trans isn't for them is extremely tiny.

I'm not in Texas, but was leaving Costco a few days ago, and on the busy street corner adjoining their parking lot there was a guy with a sign that said something like "God hates transgender" and "transgender is evil" and on his sign was a cross. I've been thinking about it for a few days and realized there was no "Love your neighbor as you love yourself."

CPS is an entity run by the states. Texas ushered this into existence. I'd bet CPS will actually be putting a lot of kids in there just for being trans.

I think they already have states using it like that in like Kentucky or something.

4

Does Kentucky have jurisdiction over the people of Texas?

No? Must have been ushered in by Texas like I was positing.

As someone that grew up in foster care as a ward of the state and frequently dealt with CPS (and this was in a "good" state), you really don't want to be calling CPS. They are an agent of the state and are there to do the state's work, not actually help children. In a state like Texas? Doubly so

I have no hope that this facility will be used ethically, it's almost certainly going to become a "pray the gay away" camp-esque operation.

BUT

If such a facility could potentially exist in the future that is voluntary and run by ethical medical professionals, then I think it would be beneficial to those who may have undergone therapy and changed their mind or decided on a different endgoal for their transformation. Right now it's a bit of a niche that doesn't appear to have a lot of dedicated practices.

I’m a live and let-live type (as well as a former TCH employee), and fully support anyone who wants to detransition for whatever reason.

Yet there is simply zero need for a dedicated program at the end of the day — this is raw fascist political theater. Any run-of-the-mill pediatric endo and mental health provider are typically sufficient. It’s not that medically complex to go in reverse; you’re just trying to kickstart the HPGA back into gear and let endogenous hormones resume.

Devil’s advocate: Maybe this new group could treat a few weird cases where a kid was intersex and did have some corrective surgery they want undone? But nope, Texas Children’s already has a dedicated team of world-class urogenital anomaly specialists who are exactly the people you’d want for that.

You have more faith in Americans than I do. Where you see a "pray the gay away" operation forming, I see a "work will set you free" thing forming.
