Wakanosho and Fujiryoga have a nice long thrust fight in the center. Eventually Fuji shoves Waka to the edge but the latter slips a thrust and circles and comes back with his own attack, but Fuji finally gets enough purchase under Waka's arm to unbalance and finish him off with tsukitaoshi.

Mitakeumi still not looking all there against Tobizaru. Not a strong tachiai from either but the Monkey drives to the bales and slips Mita's weak throw to turn him around for the push out.

Shishi still can't seem to get his technique working with his strength as he saves himself from Kotoeiho's strong belt grip position off the tachiai by breaking his balance briefly with an underarm throw attempt. Koto recovers and survives another Shishi throw before pivoting and putting the bigger wrestler down with a huge underarm throw of his own.

Hakunofuji with a great drive off the line, but Asanoyama responds by shoving Haku to the side. He's able to recover and Asa races to finish a slap down before he gets driven out. Close call with the fan going to Asa, but his heel was out first and it's overturned for Haku in the end.

Ura has a low tachiai again today but Nishikifuji stands him up and shoves him out with some face thrusts, and Ura has to do some of his famous dance moves along the edge to stop falling off.

Asakoryu got Abi to the bales and had a nice read on his position to quick step and dump him down with an underarm throw.

Churanoumi does a nice job maintaining his composure as Chiyoshoma smacks him several times in the face, driving Chiyo out as he backpedals.

Fujiseiun manages to put Shodai on the bales but Shodai sidesteps just enough to create space for a quick shoulder throw down (katasukashi).

Big tachiai between Daieisho and Wakamotoharu but Daieisho immediately steps and switches to a pull down causing WMH to do a half cartwheel.

Another big tachiai clash with Oho and Gonoyama, and Oho has a decent slap down read but seems like Gono had a bit of the old slippy-otoshi as he crashes to the clay.

Good tachiai for both Takayasu and Ichiyamamoto but Taka gets driven back until he shucks Ichi's thrust past him and down on the ring. Papa Bear is 36 this year, so if he's ever gonna take a win there's no time like the present.

Atamifuji shuts down Hiradoumi's tachiai but Hira circles and takes the bigger man back to the bales and out. Atami really needs to get after it a little more when he's wrestling in the top ranks.

Wakatakakage comes out low and hard and drives Kotozakura to the straw and the bigger man recovers, but can't get a belt grip to respond to WTK's inside right. By the time he finds it he's already on the back foot and tries a throw that isn't enough and WTK repositions to walk the ozeki out.

Yoshinofuji meets Kirishima in the middle and then gets a front belt grip that Kiri breaks, turning Yoshi around in the process, but he spins to the side before he can be pushed out. Kiri goes for an arm throw which Yoshi uses to drag his opponent off balance, but they both recover and have some thrusts in the center before Kiri slaps him to the side and down with tsukitaoshi. Great sumo going on here.

Hoshoryu is out as expected, so Fujinokawa picks up the win as we move forward with no yokozuna(e).

Some good matches today, already seems like a hot tournament this time around.

Atamifuji shuts down Hiradoumi's tachiai

IDK why Atami didn't just slap Hira down when we went very low reaching for the belt.

Wakanosho and Fujiryoga

Logic would dictate that these guys only have two arms each, but I'm not convinced.

Koto recovers and survives another Shishi throw before pivoting

At first I was like: Shishi's looking good! But on a re-watch I think Kotoeiho was just biding his time.

Kiri slaps him to the side and down with tsukitaoshi.

Kirishima always has An Expression on his face after a match. This time he looked kinda bemused.

I think Kotoeiho was just biding his time.

Yeah, just doesn't seem like Shishi has the instincts of his country mate. But he's big and strong so I think he can do halfway decently for himself if he can pick up a few more tricks.

Yokozuna Onosato and Ukrainian-born ozeki Aonishiki have withdrawn from the upcoming Summer Grand Sumo Tournament, it was confirmed Friday after neither was named in the list of bouts for the first two days of the 15-day meet.

...

Aonishiki, who posted a 7-8 losing record in March and is a demotion-threatened "kadoban" ozeki this month, suffered a blow on Wednesday when he hurt his left ankle during a training session.

The 22-year-old dynamo will drop to the third-highest rank of sekiwake unless he enters the meet this month and gets a winning record with eight or more wins.

"He's planning to take part once the pain subsides," said his stablemaster Ajigawa, former sekiwake Aminishiki. "I spoke to him this morning and he said he was 'barely walking.' It's both a mental and physical issue."

IMHO it's good that they withdraw. Better that, than suffer permanent injury.

Yeah he was stuck in Juryo for a while and managed to improve enough to make it to Makuuchi. So he might still improve some more. Hard to tell.

YES!!! I'm calling it: Takayasu's winning the tourney this time! This time for real. No, really, this time for real. THIS TIME FOR REAL!!!

If the fans believe enough in Takayasu, this time he'll win. It won't be like last time. And the time before that. And the time before that.

::: spoiler and the time before that :::
