Replaced the timing belt on my 79 series 1hdfte land cruiser yesterday
Probably should have taken some photos but was busy,
Also replaced the radiator and aircon compressor idler pully.
Took me 7 hours to do since I didn't have the exact tooling I really needed so improvised a bit making it harder but still achievable
Just treasure the car that's not "connected" and can be maintained by .... You
Absolutely, I'm thinking of buying a spare engine for it and keeping it in a crate so when it's time to repair this one I can drop the other in and keep on going while I rebuild it at my leisure.
My goal is to have this car for another 50 years even though I'm sure soon it will become illegal
That looks like a belt that drives the fuel pump, rather than a cam belt, is that right?
Diesels are weird.
The fuel pump is gear driven from the crank shaft, then the belt drives the cam shaft.
The engines are interference motors too meaning if the timing is wrong the valves will impact on the pistons so it needs to be timed correctly when done.
I need to do that to our "new to us" van. In this model, the lord smacked the bejisus out of the engine engineers so they moved the engine 2" from the wall, making it possible for humans to replace the belts.
Yeah radiator and fan out makes plenty of room in a 79 series but doing it in a van would be horrible
