Why isn't there something like musicbrainz?
With streaming enshittification, I have gone back to purchasing blu-rays and dvds, ripping them, and putting them on my jellyfin server.
Why isn't there a service like musicbrainz but for video discs? This would be especially helpful for TV shows, where the order of the episodes is inconsistent on disc, and I typically have to manually go through each episode to make sure it is named correctly.
But even for movies where you have multiple versions (theatrical vs extended cut) or extras, it is a huge pain to have to go through each extracted file and figure out what it is.
How does every one else deal with this?
Closest would be the TV database which often has aired order, dvd/blu-ray order and then absolute/chronological order. For movies you have the Movie Database. Not sure if the movie database has the extras listed or not but it should list the different cuts for a film.
I usually check the length of each episode with the disc open in VLC and find the title with a matching length in MakeMKV, so I can set the names before extracting. Jellyfin supports naming episode files 'S01E01 Episode Name' which makes it easy to track what the file really is in case the db ordering turns out to be different. For nonserialized shows where order mismatches are likely I'll check with TVDB as I'm going through the episodes on the disc.
There are several Jellyfin plugins that are supposed to help but I haven't needed to test any of them so I don't know if any would be helpful for your case
I use MediaElch which is helpful, but this is still POST process. At this point, I have already had to manually identify every track on the disk and rip it first.
What I want, is something like we have in music, where the disc is recognized via a discdb, and each of the tracks on the disc are identified ahead of time, so when ripping, you know which tracks to extract, and can have them already named appropriately.
This would be really useful for TV episodes, where the episodes are not necessarily in track order (I watched Severance out of order for the first half of season 1 because the blu-ray had track 1 as Episode 3, track 2 as Episode 2, and track 3 as Episode 1 which wasn't obvious!)
Oh, I use K3b for ripping CDs. There are some newer and fancier apps if you don't care for the UI
I found BluForge today, which uses thediscdb.com to identify and name tracks. I am going to give it a try and will report back.
The Disc DB is missing A LOT and really needs some contributions!
