Dawkins may very well be the worst thing to have happened to atheism

possibly unpopular opinion: sam harris is runner-up or at least in the running

sam harris is easily the worst horseman. Hitchens, Dawkins and Dennet all at least made useful contributions to science or to thought more generally. Sam Harris is just pseudo-intellectual smugness personified

For someone so ostensibly smart, his elevator doesn't go all the way to the top.

Someone can be smart in some ways and not in others and there is a reason people should retire as they get into their 60’s. Linus pauling had this thing about vitamin C curing colds and doing other things after the age of 65. He was a very smart person though. dwarkins is in like his 80’s now.

And also, people tend to confuse their expertise in one field with expertise in other fields.

For example, I remember reading about a scientist saying climate change is no big deal because it’s only a zero point something relative increase of temperature in Kelvin.

Of course, they were a physicist.

yeah the pauling thing was funny to because this periodical decided that they would publish things without peer review for established folks in the filed figuring they no longer needed to be checked.

on hindsite yeah. But I think it was good in that it did a good job of idendifying how important peer review is.

Mostly I was just trying to make a double-meaning sort of joke about "Elevatorgate" and how fucked up his part in that whole thing was.

that's what's funny to me. we cant even prove consciousness in people

7

Go to any Walmart on a Sunday afternoon and tell me any of those people are conscious

I spent 3 days trying to persuade myself I have consciousness and failed.
