Las Vegas pitched as relocation spot for Vancouver MLS team
Several years before the NHL approved the Vegas Golden Knights as Las Vegas’ first major professional sports franchise, Major League Soccer nearly beat them to it.
In 2014, Findlay Sports & Entertainment and The Cordish Companies unveiled plans for a $200 million soccer stadium at Symphony Park in downtown Las Vegas, with hopes of landing an MLS expansion franchise. It never materialized.
Now, soccer may be back in the conversation.
You'd think with such a shit hockey team, Vancouver would embrace soccer.
They do, but the city is not providing financing for a new stadium. Caps get pretty good attendance at games, but the team doesn't own the stadium. They rent from the city-owned stadium, which means they don't get nearly as much revenue from match attendance and concessions. They have VERY low costs, though, so they are profitable.
Billionaires don't care about having a small profit. They want a big profit with no financial risk, so they won't build a new stadium in VERY VERY expensive Vancouver. They are considering a spot on the outskirts, but it will still be expensive.
