I don't know if this makes it better or worse but it never stopped being the "Department of Defense."

The "Department Of War" is essentially stylistic preference in the executive branch. The "Defense" name is still the statutory one.

EDIT: See below; this is invalid.

I'll add that I – giving Mike Johnson the least benefit of the doubt I could – tried pretty hard to find any instance of him referring to the DoD as the "Department of War" following Trump's executive order; I could not.

He corrected himself a few days ago in a back and forth about iran after he called if department of defense and called it the department of war.

Here he is 3 days ago:

"We are not at war. We have no intention of being at war," he told reporters. "The Department of War has made it very clear -- this is a limited operation. It's an operation that is limited in its scope and duration."

Oh shit, that's why I didn't find it. Here's the C-SPAN clip. He says "Department of Defense" and then immediately corrects himself to "Department of War". Jesus christ, Mikey, I really tried.

(This was somewhat difficult to find even with the quote; please link a source if you use one in the future instead of just quoting.)

I couldnt find the source that listed the slip either, I just recall reading an article that listed the slip days back so i knew the context.

2

Limited operation, eh? A special one by any chance?

3

The Department of War was its original name. I've always thought it to be a more honest name than the Department of Defence.

When was the last defensive war the US fought?

Afghanistan is arguable, but it was primarily to prevent terrorism.

The war on Afghanistan was in response to Saudi Arabia attacking the US on 9/11. As Obama's released documents showed, the US government knew that it was Saudi Arabia, but likely due to business reasons, Bush/Cheney decided to attack other Middle Eastern countries for their oil instead and call it a War on Terror (TM).

Well they didn't go over Afghanistan for the oil.

Attacks on heroin production were primarily to hit the Taliban's source of funding. Fentanyl is synthetic, and almost none of the US heroin comes form Afghanistan.

The Afghanistan was really was about terrorism (even though the hijackers were Saudis).

1

Just like people swat beehives to get rid of bees.

We've known for quite some time that our adventurism in the Middle East (and elsewhere) is among the biggest drivers of terrorism.

Iraq and Afghanistan were very different. I protested against the Iraq war.

Our troops were guarding opium poppy fields. Then we had the opium epidemic.

We've now hit the point in the timeline where these morons thought maybe if we change the name back no one will think it was us.

"What? No, we are the Department of DEFENSE. That whole thing going on in the Middle East was caused by the Department of War. That's not us."

30

The Trump admin learning firsthand why the euphemism was used.

Department of Face-Eating Leopards, on the other hand, is doing great

It's not a war, it's a Country Building Operation. Tehran in 3 days!

Oops, forgot who he was speaking with and got the wires crossed.

Soon the GOP might have to set up a clubhouse and private Facebook group so they don't leak their real feelings.

6

Are they going to call it the Gulf of Mexico again? Or are they still pretending like it's all not a distraction from Epstein?

You reached the end
