I know it's possible, as an individual to block users / communities but is at all possible to block instances.
Or if not could I create my own instance and just defederate from those I want to block?
Or can a single user instance not become federated?

Like many others, this feature addition would be nice. Now, you have to write it yourself since developers are too busy.
