To all of those new to Piefed.social - welcome, and this post might be helpful

The onboarding will offer you a lot of topics to sign up to. These contain communities in them. The idea is to populate subscription feeds, however it can leave some users with a lot of undesired subscriptions if they click too many.

If you wish to roll this back. Go to Settings -> Profile and click the yellow bar. Don't click the red bar!

But welcome, and feel free to post your thoughts here.

![email protected] for a specific community also devoted to new users to the Fediverse.

Come Join us in the Zulip Chat if you have specific queries.

Hello stranger, I hope you will find our settlement to our liking. All is not good and well though, we seem to have an infestation of radioactive bugs in our fields that are eating the crops. If you are willing to take care of them we will pay you with some random useless items that are worth absolutely nothing.

Thank you for this information. Much appreciated! Notice it is a lively community here, which is great to contribute to. Onwards and upwards. Let's goooo

The sign up page needs to be redesigned. I literally could not sign up a few days back. I think now what it was is the catcha has a white box underneath to enter the field, which can be missed.

Im going to toss in Summit as well. Really excellent, immensly customizable, steady updates.

As a user of Relay for Reddit, this is excellent. So many of the same features and customisations that I feel right at home already.

5

Do you know if any apps support the piefed exclusive features like subscribing to threads?

2

Many people prefer smaller images on the home page - go to https://piefed.social/user/settings and try the "More compact" option in the "Compact UI" field.

The other option - "Most compact" - is similar to old.reddit which is nice but not to everyone's taste.

Also try another theme! Amethyst is a popular one and the HPT themes are nice. Also Card Shadow. The rest are kinda experimental.

Successful posts on r/buyfromeu mostly. I think some others too.

29

Because there's a UI bug. We're aware of it.

The stickying of posts instance-wide has only just been rolled out.

I assume this was posted because there's an expected influx of new users? First, welcome! Second, I'm OOL. What'd Reddit do this time?

Nothing. Just some very successful promotions on r/buyfromeu and a canadian subreddit.

Ah right! My reflex is to assume they've done something unspeakable!

In your defense, I bet if we dig for a few moments we'll find something horrible that they've done that has somehow caused this. Reddit simply cannot leave well enough alone:-).

Reddit has turned into a cesspool of censorship and corporate/government astroturfing and sock-puppetry, I blocked the entire domain in my hosts file years ago.

Unfortunately it's where people post things, and I've already cut out Facebook, Threads, Xhitter, Insta, whatever, so if I need to find information about something happening, that's pretty much the only place left for me to look (nowadays when there's only like 7 websites in the entire world).

Whether I go once per month or per day during high activity timeframes, it's where some content is. And sometimes not even then: irl, the entirety of Reddit is considered a niche habitat for nerds. So if you want to know a specific thing - like a schedule for a local park, you pretty much have to use whatever they chose to post their content to, or else go without.

is there any thread that share Bandcamp redeem code? I am new here to btw :-)

The subscribed to billions of communities I'm not interested in thing is part of why I haven't used this account since making it 9 months ago lol. I was expecting it to just subscribe me to like the generic movies/science/news comms or like just the top five mau of each category. Was the button always there and I was just blind?

Happy to be here! One of my goals for this year is to significantly decrease the amount of time I spend on centralised social media sites and apps.

I've made Mastodon, Piefed, and Matrix accounts.

Having been glued to the Reddit homepage for the better part of a decade, feels exciting to actually be somewhere new for a change!

Hey all :)

Is there a RES equivalent for this? I'd like non-ending scroll and to disable user hover popup 😬

If you are using the web UI, then you can disable the user popups by popping this bit of css in the Additional CSS field of your user settings:

.user_preview {
    display: none;
}

As for infinite scroll, that isn't a feature of the native web UI. There are some alternative UIs that support PieFed, and I don't know all the features they have, so you might find that in those. Two that I know of:

Blorp dev here. Trying to support all PieFed features but I'm a little behind:

Currently working on:

  • PieFed feeds (basically the same as Lemmy v1 multi community support)

Up next:

  • Emoji reactions
  • Create poll posts
  • Create event posts

The PieFed devs are very fast and a little hard to keep up with 😅. But tbh, we already support more than enough of the PieFed api for you to have a great time imo. Please reach out to me if a specific one of those missing features is preventing you from joining.

Hello everyone. New to piefed but not to the fediverse. Wanted to try this one after being on lemmy for over a year.

I noticed a funny thing: while boost lets me log in and see the posts, it only shows a part of the comments of this post.

Then I logged with blorp and instantly saw them all.

2

Huh. Sounds like a bug in boost, if you know where to report those!

A lot of the apps were developed for Lemmy first (as you're probably aware) and Piefed support is often experimental still, so it's not unheard of that there could be some bugs here and there.

If you want to make a discussion post instead of URL, click the "Discussion" tab.

2

Why am I getting posts in my feed that, when I open them, I can see I'm not subscribed to the.... whatever the equivalent of "subreddit" is here?
And how can I stop them showing up apart from blocking that channel?

1
Skavaureply
piefed.social

You are subscribed to a lot of communities via the topic chooser (you must have clicked all or most of the topics). Go to your settings: https://piefed.social/user/settings, click "Profile" and scroll down to "Unsubscribe from Everything".

2
Skavaureply
piefed.social

Okay I am confused here. What feed are you looking at on the frontpage: "Subscribed", "Local," "Popular" or "All"?

You might be interested in choosing your language(s) in the settings. By default none are selected, meaning that all languages will be displayed.

You'd miss out on some great German memes though.

piefed.social

It looks interesting but no way to post or make groups, so it’s a nonstarter. I’ll check out Lemmy.

1

Huh? You should be able to post.

Make groups? Do you mean communities?

You can in a few days, it's just there's a delay to prevent trolling.

2

To make sure you don't confuse them i present both :

RSS feed

The RSS feed are a way to get notification when there is a new content published and read them. Aaron Swarz helped to developp this format.

To use rss feed you need an RSS feed reader.

Piefed's Feeds

Feeds on Piefed are personal multicommunities for now they only exist on piefed. It allows users to group communities as ![email protected] ![email protected] ![email protected] into a single feed. Like this one ~[email protected]

Love the layout. It achieves the impossible: looking low-tech while somehow still being bloated. My OCD is screaming, but challenge accepted.

There's a powerful API available, and from checking why your account has a low reputation warning I see you're into vibe coding. So I guess you could have your fun putting together your own user interface.

Personally I like the default one. Each to their own.

soulspinreply

Yeah, Vibers get a lot of hate. But honestly, who cares about rep points? I sure don't. The whole system is counterproductive—it just forces everyone to think exactly the same way. If you don't, you get shut out of the 'cool' crowd.

1

The reason you're getting shut out is because you write your posts with a LLM. Goodbye.

2

What's the benefit of this whitelist only model vs a blacklist model? Wouldn't this just promote people to build their own custom echo chambers? I sort by Hot on All and only blacklist truly troublesome users. My reasoning is that I'll see more viewpoints and expand my horizon.

I am not suggesting people have to use "Subscribed" exclusively, or at all, just that the onboarding can bloat people's subscriptions in a way some people dislike if they click too many topics to follow.
