It doesn’t matter if I like Bad Bunny. Simply the idea that anyone of such stature in pop culture today can upset half a nation, doing something so harmless, brings me joy. This is not about you Red Hat Cult idiots.

I hope it's a skirt, or some form of "technically not a dress" that only computer chair experts woud argue about.

20
aussie.zone

Is this the state of the press now? All this shit going on and people are arguing about a fucking dress again

45

The dress is resistance. Joy is resistance. Yes all this shit is awful and happening but if we're not also doing things to support others and bring up people who are being marginalized and scapegoated, then the oppressors are winning.

I agree it's fucking stupid to fight about it, and yes, it's a distraction, but that doesn't take away from the real pain that people are feeling that is caused by these distraction tactics.

Two things can co-exist, and everything is related.

87

Is this the state of the press now?

No? What gave you that impression? The only semi-serious press I see about this is from the sports column of USA Today. Everything else – what little there is – is tabloid trash like The Daily Beast or the Daily Mail (don't construe this as me putting those on the same level; a tide pool and an abyssal trench are both in the ocean).

Just because something on Twitter says "BREAKING" doesn't mean it's receiving actual coverage. "The press" isn't a monolith.

24

This is the distraction for the white, christonationalist straight people. Those predisopsitioned to support ICE. The aging boomers who are not distressed by current events. All those barking to comply.

Rage bait for engagement exists at all levels.

Just remember that Green day is the Opening ceremony show. Bad bunny is the halftime show. A ton of people are confused about this detail.

Queer dude here who wears skirts in the summer time. Fully agree. Not a big fan of his music, not my style. But he can rock a fucking gown my god.

18

To be fair, a lot of his last album is way more interesting than what he's known for in Spanish speaking countries.

Like Turista or Lo que le pasó a Hawaii are actually pretty good and the lyrics aren't just horny bait either. The man has grown into a voice for more than just sex, booze and party.

2

It's so heartwarming that this show of solidarity and support is boiled down to: "Making the libs MAGA cry"

22

Is that the dress? He serves in it! Slays? Sorry I'm not sure of the right lingo on this one.

21
lemmy.curiana.net

So football is woke now? I though it's just a way for rich people to monetize giving poor people brain injuries while promoting nationalism. Amazing what good PR can do.

19

I'd say more corporate woke than woke. A man in a dress is a cultural statement, sure, but it won't cause a rift in the market the way Palestinian activists getting their message through might. I think Bad Bunny is a force for good though, and the more google searches on his name the better off we are. It'd be nice if the Democrats could muster the courage to support marginalized folks, so in their absence it's at least nice that celebrities mostly do. At least the ones that haven't failed out of Hollywood and decided they're going to be grifters now.

The halftime show has always been an opportunity for a major musical act to send whatever message they can fit in to a huge portion of America.

But yes, the game itself is destroying the bodies and minds of players and hopeful players (of whom the most committed tend to be poor and racialized). It's not nearly enough better than boxing. I don't really care for any sports, but baseball and basketball seem to be the least horrible (basketball has the ncaa issues though, and really needs a minor league instead). Soccer/football is also good except for heading the ball too much can result in inventing Posadism.

Strong disagree on football (soccer). Because of it's popularity and influence it gets away with being the most disgustingly corrupt sport there is. FIFA is organizing championships in stadiums build with slave labor. They gave a peace prize to a fascist just to make sure nothing will stop them from gauging ticket prices. Overall: 🤮

Then again, I also don't really care about sports :) Definitely not professional ones. It all gets ugly once money is involved.

5

Oh absolutely, but soccer isn't killing the players is what I meant. Though I also was thinking of MLS not FIFA. Sorry, I can be a bit American sometimes

Based af bad bunny make them bitches wretch and shriek

18
lemmy.world

Based on the Republicans I know, they will just hit "mute" and go in the kitchen for the halftime show. Their wives might watch parts of it and shake their heads before yelling "There's a whole thing of ranch dip in the fridge, and I can microwave some Velveeta if you want nachos."

18

You think they're going to pass up on an opportunity to bitch and whine and pearl clutch about something completely inconsequential???

Puerto Rican rapper. Repugs had a collective aneurysm when he was announced for the half time show because oh no a latino

This is fake news though. He doesn't have plans for a dress apparently.

38

Does he even have plans to enter the country at any point?

Edit: srry must have the wrong music artist, there was some other latin pop music guy who said he doesn't want to perform in the US anymore

In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017 and the clusterfuck of a governmental response, the only thing Trump supporters and I agreed on was that the responsibility fell on the President of Perto Rico, who was an unqualified fuck-up.

15
lemmy.world

I have zero clue who the Puerto Rican president was in 2017. But as an American territory, why wouldn't America have some responsibility? Even if it's just sending aid money to hire contracted help.

3

Whoosh

::: spoiler Title Donald Trump was the president of Puerto Rico in 2017, since it is an American territory. Some people in MAGA didn't realize this. OP was playing on this fact to say that Donald Trump was a fuck up. :::

11

For people unaware, the inhabited US territories except for American Samoa are like states, except the federal government has more power to override their decisions and they don't get a say in the federal government. They still have the same federal government, and I believe they have non voting legislators who are able to speak on their behalf but can't vote (as does DC)

However their people are full US citizens, just as much as those born in the 50 states. This means that if I, a white English speaker from the contiguous 48, were to move to Puerto Rico I'd be more than permitted, but would lose my say in the federal government until I moved back. The inverse is also true and Puerto Ricans who move to a state get to vote in federal elections.

All that said, Puerto Rico should be given the option for statehood or independence. They're more populous than several states (the problem with the pacific territories is they're each tiny and some states we have don't have the population to justify the same number of senators as California).

The most streamed musical artist in the world in four separate years, who is set to play the 2026 Super Bowl halftime show.

Knowing this guy loooves messing with fuckheads makes me happy. Like, if all this negative MAGAt moron shite was making him sad, I'd be sad.

You go ahead and rock that dress! Probably'll make the MAGAts jealous lol

You underestimate my ability to dodge current trends. I know who many Gen Z-A artists are because of crossword puzzles. Couldn't tell you what genre Megan Thee Stallion is, and I can't remember the name of that one who looks like a scary marionette wizard. I 43 :/

Lol, is that sarcasm (it's hard to tell online sometimes)

Despacito is absolutely not Bad Bunny. That's Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee

I'm not us based but yeah I already heard it

Crashing out is a term for someone losing their minds, typically over some inconsequential shit.

26
SCmSTRreply
lemmy.blahaj.zone

Is it inconsequential? Or is it just just catalystic? Like is a crash out seen as valid by default or no

2

It has a generally negative connotation, like someone who is filmed throwing a tantrum in public, or who posts a bunch of absolutely furious tweets in response to getting called out. Usually it's considered an embarrassing and excessive reaction (possibly career-ending, or reputation besmirching). But sometimes you'll see someone post a video/screenshot of a crash out with the title: "that was the most justified crash out ever," implying that yes, their reaction was extreme, but for a good reason.

I've never watched super bowl at all let alone halftime show. Are there usually easily accessible recordings afterwards?

8
lemmy.zip

Yeah it'll be all over yt, along with the ads. The only things that's harder to find is the actual game footage (although that may be as easy as torrenting something, but I dunno bc I don't watch football so I've never gone looking)

5

If you are looking for a football game to watch by alternative methods, to the East there is a Stream that may have what you seek.

3

I rarely ever care to watch the Superbowl and i have little to no interest in Bad Bunyy. But this year I'm definitely tuning in. This should be one for the ages.

8

Why is a man wearing a dress automatically an attention seeker?

I wear skirts in the summer because they're more comfortable than shorts.

9

I get him confused with “bhad babby” or however you spell it - the “catch me outside” girl who got sent to sexual abuse and torture camp on Dr Phil

2

They are opening the Superbowl, not for Bad Bunny. Bad Bunny is the half-time show. We might get to hear a rad version of the star-spangled banner.
