I'm glad he is dead and ignoring his hate filled legacy is like pretending that Nazis didn't exist.

He should be remembered as the hate filled shitstain he was so that we can learn from history.

Especially when people are still trying to paint him as some kind of saint. Let's be clear about what he really was.

He is still influencing things amongst conservatives and makes a damned good punching bag, after all a corpse can't fight back.

While I despise Kirk, he had some important things to say. One quote I'm particularly fond of is "Ohgh. Gurgle. Ahhhhhh"

Oh did something to him?

Keeping his message alive seems pretty important for everyone who wants to handwave the type of person he was.

Ignoring them and letting him die a failed martyr and weirdo pariah is the best thing we can do to remember him.

You can't ignore it, anymore than you can ignore chest pain or trouble breathing.

IDK, soon enough republicans will want to name schools and other shit after him. I think, for now at least, people need to be reminded who he was. He doesn't deserve to rest in peace.

I'm guessing you're joking, but he already has a highway name after him. And there's like 20 schools name after that governor who opposed black people trying to enter Universities in the 60s lol. If you don't think Americans are crazy enough to do so, you need a reality check.

4

Sorry about that, it's hard too know when people are being sarcastic in these time.

4

I would agree, but it's been less than a year since he was shot, so the jury's still up on which way his legacy will go.

5

lol, if only the government didn’t give them voting rights, it wouldn’t have had to flood the streets with harmful drugs and also make those drugs illegal. MLK should have thought about this before asking for basic human rights!

Narrator: Kirk was later killed in a school shooting by a white Utah resident, Kirk had frequently called similar deaths "acceptable sacrifices" for his most valued beliefs.

32

Cripes, this fuckin’ guy. I wish somebody would just take . . . *checks earpiece*

. . . In other news,

31

Hey, leave the guy alone. It's been over four months since he said anything racist.

What ever happened Chazzy Clerk? I've not heard from him in ages, which I'm not complaining about because he is a bit of a pain in the neck...

Really? Wow, did he bust a blood vessel whilst doing it?

12

It's not like the ramping up of the already criminalization of black life might have been partially to find a new way to exploit an underclass.

15

Yes I'm sure the racist over-policing was due to MLK giving orders from beyond the grave rather than racists doinh racist things. (/s)

And here I was thinking I never had to read this garbage again. It's quite difficult to maintain a decent slice of internet these days isn't it?

Their tweets get kinda boring once they are 6 feet under. We could do with more boring tweets.

as much as I hate him, he's not blaming MLK Jr, he's blaming the DEIFICATION of MLK Jr.

He's probably still wrong, because it's fucking kirk, but be mad at the correct thing

3
lemmy.world

That's a rhetorical game so he can disparage MLK's ideas and then say, "I didn't say I hate MLK."

43
lemmy.zip

That’s not any different? When was the “deification” of MLK exactly? Is there a set year that happened we could look at to prove his shitty points? No, he’s just called it something vague so he can make shit up and no one can verify if he’s incorrect? Crazy.

Let me put my hazmat suit on and try to steel man Kirk's comment. Can't stress enough that this is not an endorsement of the guy.

Deification is a slow gradual process that happens in the culture so of course it can't be pinpointed. The way people quote just the "I have a dream" stuff but not the criticisms of capitalism or other more "extreme" views of MLK sort of point to a legendary development where people don't actually celebrate the real man. This is used by the ruling class (they likely helped it happen too) to prevent any meaningful change (especially considering what they did to MLK) and just apply a veneer of progress while still oppressing and sowing division in the population.

Yea like I understand if he was actually talking about those things… but I am going to guess that’s not his even close to his actual point. It’s just a way of clouding what he is saying.

1

Agreed. That's why dog-whistles work so well; you can retreat to the reasonable point while also getting the unreasonable one across to those you're really talking to.

Maybe in this instance but don't get confused, Kirk has said many times MLK is a bad person and what he did was terrible. There's tons more if you just go looking but just for starters he said:

"MLK was awful. OK? He's not a good person. He said one good thing he actually didn't believe. Go research MLK, you should go research him."

When asked if it was true that when he was younger, he used to describe MLK as a hero and a civil rights icon, he responded simply:

"That's true, and I used to be wrong."

Regarding the Civil Rights Act that MLK famously pushed so hard for:

"We made a huge mistake when we passed the Civil Rights Act in the mid-1960s."

Again this is just a bit. Go digging and you'll find much much more.

makes sense, Kirk was a POS and is looking up at us from hell right now. Good riddance.

2

Not the bombing of their neighborhoods and black wall street?

Maybe when you prevent an entire group of people from participating in commerce and economic gain their only alternative are handouts?
