After the overthrow of the Assad regime in Syria, the new Transitional Government promised elections and equal rights for women as well as for all ethnic and religious groups. Since then, however, it has carried out massacres of the Alawite population, in which approximately 1500 people were murdered, as well as mass crimes against Druze communities, where around 2000 people were killed. In January, government forces, supported by Turkish mercenaries and drones, attacked and then militarily seized the autonomously administered Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah in Aleppo. As a result of these actions, around 120 000 people were forced to flee their homes to save their lives. Many were killed or injured, and over 500 were abducted. Their fate remains unknown. Witnesses report public executions, desecration of bodies, throwing tied up people from buildings, and systematic torture. The perpetrators, aware of their impunity, document their crimes without the slightest shame.
While government troops were murdering civilians, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, was visiting Syria, shaking hands with Ahmed al Shaara, who is responsible for the massacres, and announcing the transfer of 620 million euros to the new government, which was not elected by society but seized power by force. While declarations of peace, inclusivity, and cooperation between Syria and Europe were being made, kidnappings, torture, and massacres of civilians were taking place in the Kurdish districts of Syria’s second-largest city. In this way, perpetrators of war crimes are being legitimized as partners for dialogue.
The attack on the Kurdish neighborhoods of Aleppo is an attack on the Women’s Revolution, that is, the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, known as Rojava. This project, based on equality, women’s emancipation, and peaceful coexistence of different communities, could serve as a model for all of Syria. However, it is not with representatives of the Democratic Administration that world leaders choose to meet. The authoritarian and patriarchal Syrian authorities seek to erase this example from the map.
The Women’s Revolution is inconvenient for empires pursuing their interests in the region, which is why it once again becomes a target of attacks and may once again be sold out by global powers in exchange for oil and influence. Israel, Turkey, the United States, Russia, and Europe are planning a new division of Syria that benefits only themselves and the ruling elite. A revolutionary, egalitarian, multiethnic, and democratic project does not fit into these plans.
We gather in front of the headquarters of the Representation of the European Commission in Poland to clearly and firmly state that we do not agree with legitimizing the current Syrian government. We do not agree with the smear campaign against the revolutionary project of North and East Syria. We do not agree with a Syria of one “correct” faith, where hatred between ethnic and religious groups is fueled and women are deprived of their rights.
We echo the voices of the people living in the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria:
We want a democratic and egalitarian Syria. We want a Syria for women and for all ethnic and religious groups. We recognize the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria as a truly just and peaceful project for the future of the country.
We demand an end to the massacres, humanitarian and political support for the Autonomous Administration, and accountability of the Syrian Transitional Government for the crimes it has committed.
Come to show your solidarity with Kurdish people and all people of Syria!
