Which subreddits would you most like to see on Lemmy?
I'm genuinely so excited to see some of the more focussed communities blossom on this platform as they have on Reddit over the years. Which are your favourites and which do you think could succeed here?
r/PCMasterRace r/GameDeals r/Fitness r/BuildAPC
Subs that have good guides and community info
I'm surprised to find there are no adult subs popping up.
I hit up my brother in law who is involved in the adult industry and he is going to spin up an instance that's super ok with adult content in the next day or so.
Let's face it, without porn tumbler disappeared, and I think Reddit will too when it bans anything nsfw
This is the dev run instance, and we don't have time to moderate that.
Isn't this the overarching problem with lemmy just in general though? I mean, I'm loving it here, but without GOOD moderation any community, no matter where or how it's hosted, can become very bad very quickly. I'm not blaming you all at all!! I completely understand where you're coming from, but this is the same scaling issues that mastadon faces right? Is there any idea about how to address this?
The NSFW ones.
I should make a whole instance dedicated to that. Alas, I can't afford it and I lack the knowledge.
I can give you a push in the right direction as long as you are comfortable running commands in a terminal. After the initial 15-30 minutes of technical setup, it becomes easy. But other than that I have no desire to run an NSFW community.
Let me know - I could even set it up w/ you and hand you the keys, per se. I just don’t want lack of tech knowledge to be a barrier to entry for anyone.
You sound like a pretty great person and I really appreciate the offer. The biggest issue is money sadly, a fedi instance takes a lot of bandwidth and one dedicated to nsfw content will also take a lot of storage, both are things that in a vps would take a good bit of money and I'm already spending some, even if not A LOT, on my raccoonden.moe
The most band and storage heavy part of it is my radio which I host on a raspberrypi along with a mumble server, but there's only so much the poor thing can handle on it's own. Today I installed some neovim plugins and I already noticed using nvim feels a little slower, so I doubt a lemmy instance is a possibility.
Can the images not be hosted on redgifs? Is there an option for external hosting?
I dunno, I never hosted a Lemmy instance.
Lemmy is very lightweight in terms of RAM and CPU, but I agree storage would be a primary concern. Bandwidth TBD - I’ve only run my instance for about 24 hours
I wonder if another raspberrypi could handle it all on it's own if it's lightweight. But then again, it might need the same door that goes to the pi I already use and in that case things wouldn't work.
It would be very cool to host it but I think I'm gonna limit myself to modding a sub for something I like.
Well, whatever you do, what matters is you are here and engaging and building the community. That counts for something.
Someone in another comment brought up a good point, could the oemmy instance be set so that one can only link to pictures outside? That would prevent the server being overloaded
You could probably get a lemmy going in the cloud I know there are cloud services for mastodon don't know how much it costs but I don't think a small instance is that expensive just charge a fee of a few dollars per user and you should easily cover your cost and make a small bit of money as well
My understanding is that a lot of VPS hosts have rules against hosting NSFW content, and they have to be strictly moderated (hopefully for obvious reasons…).
Here are the ones I'd most like to see:
Both are a bit new and I still need moderators given the larger scale, but c/EarthPorn is now here, as is c/personalfinance
For an askscience alternative, I'd say check out: https://mander.xyz/c/nostupidquestions
For space stuff, I'd say check out https://mander.xyz/c/astronomy and https://mander.xyz/c/space
mander.xyz as a whole is meant to be science and nature focused.
Granted they're all tiny and have low engagement, but it's a start.
Happy to report that r/menopause has moved to c/[email protected]
Yes, definitely personalfinance!
I'd be keen for RStudio!
I know we're talking about moving away from Reddit but I don't see this on your list and it sounds like it might be a match for your interests --have you taken a look at /r/badwomensanatomy?
Yep, that one's good too!
I need some more sports communities. NFL, CFB, football/soccer, NBA, MLB, Hockey, etc. A lot of the very niche ones like certain anime (r/onepiece, r/kingdom, r/hunterxhunter) or book (r/asoiaf, r/stormlight_archive) or game (r/deadbydaylight, r/stellaris, r/EU4) probably aren't going to get high enough populations to exist here so i don't expect it. But I need the sport specific ones
https://lemmy.ca/c/hockey
It's not very active right now but hopefully it will grow fast.
I just created a OnePiece community and hope it takes off, too. Help out by discussing and posting, please! :)
/r/boardgames and /r/emacs for me. I can get some of my boardgame fix on Mastodon but the more the better. I see that there is a ![email protected] but not very active so far and not sure if the mod is still around.
Edit, apparently both exist!
Cat communities are definitely a rabbit hole that is fun to go down on Reddit. Sport ones like r/NBA and r/Formula1 are some of my most used subreddits.
We do have [email protected] on Lemmy if you want a sport-based instance. It's dedicated to Australian Rules Football and the AFL. And if you don't follow the AFL, now's a great time to start 😊
Yeah this place needs a r/soccer alternative as well!
Hopefully we get it right and name it r/football this time!
r/piano r/Ukraine r/linux r/linuxphones r/philosophy r/geopolitics

Linux already exists, there's [email protected]
Linux is pretty well represented so far versus most other topics
r/Programmerhumor, r/Linux, r/Piracy, r/Apple, r/Playstation, r/me_irl
https://browse.feddit.de/ helps to find communities.
Oh, didn't know about that. Thanks!
The good news is some of those already exist here!
Final Fantasy XIV. No, you have a problem!
more animal pic subs
r/squaredcircle r/formuladank
One for home theaters, and one for audiophiles.
Where’s the Grateful Dead community on Lemmy hanging out?
I'm not sure yet! Just joined up yesterday. I do see there's [email protected] but it just has one user (well two now, I just subscribed).
As a professional wrestling fan I want to see squaredcircle and aew official on lemmy
heck yeah!
If you want to see a specific community that doesn't exist, then set it up and post some content! If you want the type of places to hang out that you had on Reddit, you need to create it, nurture it, and grow it. There's no guarantee that Lemmy will be the place to land during the Reddit exodus, but it is a place to land, and a damn fine one at that. Putting my money where my mouth is, if you ever want to talk about calculators head on over to [email protected]
I created and mod two subs on reddit, and I'd love to see them make their way over here, but I've had a child since creating those subs, and I just don't think I have the time to do it anymore, sadly. Both subs seem on-board with the blackout on the 12th though, so maybe some of their members will find their way here. Maybe I'll even point them here with a sticky on the 12th...
Definitely do a sticky! I'd be doing that for sure if I had your mod powers 😊
Any hint to how to? I mean, there's a reason why community creating is reserved for admins, and is there somewhere a guide doc for creators/mods?
If your instance allows it, you should just have an option to create a community on the front page - some instances prohibit community creation to just their admins. I believe beehaw is one of them, to more or less curate/organize the content there as far as I understand (someone from their team would be able to better explain/phrase it than I have most likely).
Currently, I don't think Lemmy has a way to create communities on remote instances, so if you have a request for a community you'd want to reach out to their team (I imagine https://beehaw.org/c/support is a good place, but don't quote me on that) to see if it is something they'd be interested in.
Seems to be a place at least for general discussion on this topic. Such questions have already been asked there.
@[email protected] @[email protected] Thank you, this can also be info for others. I'm afraid this is going to be community fragmentation anarchy. It's already not easy to find subs without a categorised index ... and then, hopefully there will be ways to move users/subs between servers. But let's see how this matures.
... damn how do i make this link and notify more than one user ...
I believe you can omit tagging someone if you're replying directly to them, but otherwise you've done it the right way (I don't know how to get it to "highlight" the mention in the comment, but I can confirm I did get both a reply and mention notification so despite it not being highlighted it did still work)!
Wow thanks for the reply. Yes i knew i can omit it but wanted to mention both explicitly. That was one thing i never knew on Reddit, if users get notified when i "@" mention them or if stuff got cross-posted when people mentioned the r/sub. I feel a bit idiotic now, although i'm technically knowledgeable. Just not scial media adapted.
It's all good! I feel like I'm constantly learning something new every day (which I'll gladly take)!
I know on Reddit username mentions was a premium feature at some point, but I feel like I heard at some point it got moved to just being a general feature, cross posts required an explicit button click on a post to perform a cross post (similar to how it works here on Lemmy as well).
If you click on
Communitiesand selectAll, it allows you to search for Communities across all of Lemmy-Land, not just the instance that you've signed up on. I think that every instance can have its own separate community with the same name, but in a lot of cases that may even be desirable. As far as moving users/communities between servers, that's Nomadic Identity. As far as I know, the only Fediverse project that implements it is the Zot protocol that Streams and Hubzilla are built on. ActivityPub does not support and it's not on the roadmap as far as I know.
Community search: yes i know and used it. It's just not useful if one doesn't exactly know what keyword to search for. An index by general topc would be nice to have. I was thinking about making a sorting thread but really, a subforum would not be the right place for it.
Migration of data ... well too much OT discussion coming to my mind.
r/selfhosted is an amazing community full of passionate people that live for this type of federated community.
There's [email protected] and [email protected]
Some music subs I like to peruse like r/Headphones, HeadphoneAdvice, BudgetAudiophile, Vinyl etc. If anyone has some alts to suggest, let me know!
Yep +1 for subs like /r/vinyl, /r/audiophile and /r/budgetaudiophile
would love to see Beatmatch, DJs, and audiophile as well.
I also just made an Ableton User Group if anyone is interested in that
I support anything creative, unfortunately I'm not seeing a lot of that yet. I build models, dioramas, scratch build buildings, etc.
I was tempted to start a general making community where all disciplines of making are supported, but as far as I can see on the app that isn't an option.
I suggested a diy subreddit on the sub suggestion thread iver at beehaw
Same. It seems like there aren't any active communities here about art, which is a massive shame.
/r/retrobattlestations, /r/retrocomputing, /r/BBS... I'd be happy to mod one, but don't see how to create - I'm new so... I'd love for a BBS (Bulletin Board Systems) and other retro-computing subs. w00t w00t!!!
pAULIE42o
So many, but I understand this is a tiny community in comparison. But content about all areas of 3dprinting, clay modelling, android, cycling, UK based groups, digital art and traditional art, food, football or soccer as some call it, Liverpool FC, much more humour and comedy, gaming from retro to modern, gardening, fungi and mosses, music, photography, retro computing, all aspects of science, UK wildlife and conservation, writing and poetry, etc... I could go on and on ..... I understand some of these are represented here, but they need a boost.
Yess to more UK stuff. Individual cities, and nationwide news, that isn’t of interest to an international audience but is of interest to a domestic one.
Agreed, UnitedKingdom, UkPolitics, and CasualUk for me.
On a related note, are there any good UK based instances? The only UK one I could find was one for Glasgow.
Loseit, maliciouscompliance, skincareaddiction, halloween, horror, ladyboners, Microdosing, workreform, truecrime, movies
I thought about creating loseit, but I'm not up for moderating something like that. I can see it getting hairy quickly.
Recreated maliciouscompliance (one of my favorite communities)! Mostly reposts for now, but OC should trickle in slowly.
Try joining from one of the links below:
/c/[email protected]
https://lemmy.world/c/maliciouscompliance
Or type the following in the search bar at the top: ![email protected]
Art, art related. Watercolour. Oils. Sketching. Urban sketching. Etc
It ain't all of them but I started c/LearnArt here, might see if I can do r/DrawForMe and maybe a couple others though I'm running into rate limits doing that so it wouldn't be for a bit.
And posted. Thank you
D&D/TTRPG subs like r/DMAcademy, r/3d6, r/Pathfinder2e, r/dndnext, r/dndbehindthescreen, r/dnd, r/dndmaps, etc.
Subs related to specific games I enjoy like r/Stellaris, r/Rimworld, r/crusaderkings, r/citiesskylines, r/slaythespire
Subs where design and cool information that interests me can be shared like r/vexillology, r/history, r/mapporn, r/dataisbeautiful, r/etymology, r/todayilearned, etc.
Neurodivergence spaces like r/Aspergers, r/AutisticWithADHD, and r/autism
Subs built around a certain kind of joke or humour like r/sbubby, r/expanddong, r/Polandball, r/highqualitygifs, etc.
definitled!
add r/HSP
I think an exodus to a new site allows an interesting opportunity to break from the restriction of traditions and create new communities. There's no reason the 196 clones have to be called '196'! (or worse, '197')
I actually have a list of them so just to jot down a few.
r/CozyPlacesr/corebootr/rabbitsr/VoidBunniesr/RoomPornr/WritingPromptsr/ MirrorsEdgeAestheticsr/ Otterabler/OnlinePreservationr/lagoloaf r/GoldenAgeMinecraft r/FarmsofStardewValleyr/EarthPornEDIT:oh andr/UsabilityPornhttps://old.reddit.com/r/UsabilityPorn/That's about it for one's I know of at least, that aren't either hyper specific obscure or else some degree of NSFW, aside from SnakesWithHats but I actually got that started here. https://lemmy.ml/c/snakeswithhats
EDIT: I actually started a handful of these now, since I wanted to see em here so here's some now.

Shitpost subs like wordington, 196, balkans_irl, 2visegrad4you, guacamole_penis and others.
I just created a [email protected], now to actually post some content...
Aww thank you! Although I'm just a general lurker, I can only repost there unfortunately.
My shitposts are pretty terrible too, but you gotta start somewhere, right? :D
Haha, yes indeed. :D
/r/DestinyTheGame and /r/FFXIV would be nice.
weightlifting
the fitness & health comm isn't what I'm looking for
Holup? Funny?
This might be controversial, but I think the TwoX communities need space here. Don’t make them automatically appear on the front page, and hopefully their creators and moderators have the tools to keep them space but yeah, this site needs spaces like TwoXSex, TwoXChromosomes, TwoXPreppers, Beyondthebump, Mommit, Childfree, etc. I’m new here but didn’t find any of those on initial glance and like a great bar, you need women to show up and be seen/heard. Give them a safe space (see my comment on moderation tools) to transition to and I bet Lemmy would get lots of people to switch.
Also, to echo another person, we need a “master” list of communities, at least the umbrella ones. For instance /plants could be the umbrella for /botany, /trees, /gardening, etc.
Lastly, this site needs porn. Hear me out before you start judging. Nothing drives technology usage like porn. VHS and digital video are both huge because of porn driving widespread adoption. PornHub needs to spin up a server for its infinite catalog which ensures they get paid but also that minors aren’t being exploited.
Oh, feature
Requestrequest, some kind of incognito mode in the mobile apps which lets people view NSFW media without it being in their history. Also the app should disable built-in messaging options while in that mode to ensure fewer bad decisions and bad outcomes from accidental texts of disabled midget porn to various contacts. Just an idea I had.I've actually meant to ask about this. I not only agree about the porn part of the site needing to exist, but I feel like it's important that any federated platform have really terrible parts to it. I feel like I will truly trust the platform once it has places that I'm both uninterested in going to and also find disturbing. I'm not asking for this to turn into a right wing cesspool but there are several edgy communities such as r/WatchPeopleDie that I'd like a reappearance of even if I don't browse them.
Maybe we can skip naming the women's communities after chromosomes this time around. TheGirlSurvivalGuide is another good subreddit to reference as far as nice women's support content. From what I recall, that support group gained in popularity after TwoXChromosomes was made a default subreddit.
Personally, I could do without the porn. I don't think every website needs to include porn. There are lots of other places to go for that content. So much of it features abuse of women and honestly it's quite refreshing when I find a site that doesn't feature it. I really hate unexpectedly coming across someone choking a woman. I wouldn't mind it so much if the bulk of it was adults actually sharing mutual joy together, but that's not generally how it goes and I hate to see so much suffering and exploitation normalized and spread across so many different places.
As a Transfem individual I didn’t necessarily feel excluded from TwoX, but I could see how other transwomen or AMAB transfem people might feel that way.
Edit: I’d love to see Witches V Patriarchy here too.
I would love witches v patriarchy too!
They do have a discord but generally discord moves pretty quickly so it can be harder to participate
I would like to see r/simracing/
I mean have simracing subreddit here at Lemmy
Philosophy, Liturature and Science subs (there are numerous).
Here are a bunch I'd be interested in. Can't create communities on the instance I'm on, but if anyone starts any of these I'd be happy to start participating!
Just realized there are not many I'm that active in haha.
Also chinesewatches, for great value watches and less snobbery that seems to be in watches on reddit :)
Personal finance and watches.
Exactly my kind of humor and reminds me to add watchescirclejerk as well. No hate, I'm in those subs as well.
I did find ![email protected] also someone above mentioned a newely created ![email protected]
Also we have a personal finance magazine on kbin https://kbin.social/m/PersonalFinance
It would be great to see the group thrive, so please sub!
I think a light hearted /r/aww or /r/humansbeingbros would be quite nice to have.
Besides that, I have some specific game and tech subs I'd like to see.
My main focus on Lemmy, though, is to grow a Portuguese community, hence the instance :)
There should be a way for community mods to have comments made on a local instance be added to a larger community so you don't end up with 50k small community's maybe you could have #community's like on mastodon any post made in certain community's could auto add a hashtag so you could have a community like r squaredcircle on reddit with 50k members but still have small community's with there own mods
r/trees
https://lemmy.ml/c/trees
I'm hoping for more medical communities to pop up. So far I haven't found anything that is like r/medicine, r/residency, or any of the specialty of the research subs on reddit.
I'm on fucker with bad sense of humor (and transbian tendencies) so I frequent these on Reddit (and thus would be nice to have them here) r/196 r/traaa r/GaySoundsShitposts r/AnarchyChess r/actuallesbians
Throw in some anarchist communities as a bonus.
Archery is one of the main ones I'm missing. I'd create it myself if I could work out how 🤣
Games, Archery, Mushrooms, Growing, Synthesizers, Drugs
games, mechanicalkeyboards, fountainpens, boardgames, music, indiemusic, audio, audiophile, headphones, ....
so many!
edit: photography (how’d I forget that one?)
I would love for r/synthDIY, r/AskElectronics and r/redneckengineering to move over to lemmy.
I think they would all do quite well here.
very much agree about redneckengineering, I'm missing it so much
/r/guitarpedals is my jam.
There are some subs that I'd rather see dead, and some that are just amazing, just based on their moderation and communities. r/fantasy is a shining beacon of light in an otherwise dark world, and with it a lot of the sister communities like WoT, Stormlight_archive and similar. They all have a positive feel, including and fair with just enough moderation without becoming heavy handed.
So in a sense it's not so much the content, but rather the community itself that I'd love to see persisting beyond reddit.
Most of my time on Reddit was spent on r/Rimworld, r/Huntshowdown and r/books. So, those. I'll probably engage on any graphic design and art adjacent subs too, when they pop up.
Edit: actually, I'd like to get something cleared up. Instances are akin to subreddits? Or are multiple boards inside one instance?
Instances are your server, you can think of them as "reddit" individually with their own "subreddits" (I forget what we call them but it isn't sublemmy for some reason, I think it is just "communities").
The difference is that all the different separate "reddits" talk to each other and display posts from all the ones they talk to on the "all" tab. The "local" tab is your instance and it's sub-communities only which seems to be lemmy.ml, but under the "all" tab you'll notice "communities"@beehaw.org as well since they talk to each other, and users from either can see both.
If you're familiar with mastodon, lemmy is like reddit and mastodon had a baby together.
IMO it works to just call them "subs" because you subscribe to them.
Grimdank. I don't play it but I love the Warhammer universe.
@fl1ghtless @geomusicmaker +1 for Grimdark, Also a vibrant Ireland community would be great, that's very active on Reddit, I also enjoy the BoardGames and SoloGaming communities
Count me in for boardgames! Looks like there is a ![email protected] but doesn't seem very active. I wonder if it would make sense to try using that or try to get a !boardgames created somewhere?
Boardgames for sure. I don't play those either but I am fascinated by them for some reason.
Looks like it exists now: [email protected]
porn subreddit
I imagine that could be quite tricky to moderate, which is most likely why most instances I've seen don't really want to approach that.
There is definitely porn lemmy you might have to join one that allows it because some lemmys don't want to be a part of that
I dont know if my niche will quite fit the site yet, but I've followed a lot of animal subs ( crestedgecko, aidke, partyparrot, the twenty thousand cat subs... catsbeingcats of course a favorite ) and also a lot of botany style subs ( botany is the obvious one, houseplants, houseplantcirclejerk, savagegarden, mycology ) and then the unusual to pique interest ( unusualvideos, atbge, designdesign, barbarawalters4scale, hmmmgifs )
Special call out to /todayilearned a /awwducational for giving me fun facts to share with my co workers.
I think if there were master communities it would help appeal to a broad crowd.
I just made [email protected] to roll up some of my favorite animal subs.
Looks like there is a todayilearned community [email protected], but it seems dead at the moment
SPORTS! The sports subreddits for specific leagues or teams were some of my most visited. I always hated r/NFL though because the mods only really allowed twitter links rather than legit discussion. I'm going to try and be as active as I can in the NFL and NBA communities here, and I might open some for my favorite teams.
This is actually a great opportunity to organically develop communities like r/NBAdiscussion but for other leagues. I always found reddit to be lacking a real football discussion subreddit, and r/NFL had such strict rules you couldn't even talk about relevant topics, such as EA and the NFL exclusive license (any Madden-related post would be auto-removed and told to post on r/Madden), and you also couldn't advertise an NFL discussion based sub anywhere either.
There's got to be an overlap between Lemmy users and sports fans! I can't be the only tech nerd who is interested in the fediverse and also loves American sports!
Yeah, one of the few things I still use reddit for regularly is NHL discussion. (Go Capitals!) I wish we had communities for that here.
The other subreddits I still use regularly are for specific video games. Some of them really have no hope of making it to lemmy, but I think we could probably fit pokemon discussion and trading stuff here.
I expect a large influx of redditors over the next few months, especially when they kill off old.reddit and the 3rd party apps no longer work. So if you create (if it isn't already created) an NHL and Pokemon community here, I'm sure users will find them and they would become active eventually. We are decently early here in my opinion.
Agreed. For me it’s motorsports. There’s an existing F1 community but it’s not very active. I’m hopeful that it’ll grow and we’ll see other communities form around it for other sports.
I prefer formuladank personally but idk if I'd be welcome here
I need to see some of the circlejerk subreddits here r/vinyljerk is my one true passion
circlejerk subreddits
Yes please, before it's too late
