Senate to vote next week to block Trump’s military action against Venezuela

The Senate will vote next week on a bipartisan war powers resolution to block Trump from continuing military against Venezuela — a vote that takes on heightened importance after U.S. forces attacked the South American nation and arrested President Nicolás Maduro early Saturday.

The resolution to block the administration from engaging in further hostilities against Venezuela is privileged, which means Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) cannot stop it from coming to the floor.

The measure is sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.).

Next week??

Finish your weekend in the Hamptons why don't you, you fucking slackers.

How about an emergency session in the House? Like RIGHT NOW? Trump just attacked another country: do your fucking job!

Well Mikey Johnson didn’t get Trump’s permission for an emergency session, so no.

Some reporter is gonna ask Mike Johnson on Monday if he saw that the US attacked Venezuela and he's gonna say he doesn't know.

If only reporters had balls: "You haven't heard about X giant thing the president did? Doesn't that make you dogshit at your job?"

17

The only people with access are those that handle republicans with the softest tiny baby hands possible.

9

Gotta soften the rethoric in case it turns around and bites them in the ass, because precedent!

1

are they just gonna wait till the next election to "do" something about it?

We now go live to the DNC headquarters:

13

By next election the dems will be pushing for "more humane" long-term governance of Venezuela, Colombia, etc... (aka same as republicans, different marketing)...

1
piefed.world

It's the United States of America. You've got to set appropriate expectations. The last time the USA launched a series of illegal wars they did it with broad bipartisan support.

4

I think the speaker of the house or majority leader can call an emergency session. I am really unsure about all of the rules.

2
lemmy.world

Next fucking week? This isn't warranting of an emergency session of congress?

The US is so fucking fucked. The Dems are gonna find a way to lose the primaries or surrender to Trump's attempts to steal them.

We've seen nothing from these assholes in the times of greatest crisis.

Mulligrubsreply

It's not an emergency, that's why.

It's business as usual in the USA. We've done this many times. It's like our thing.

For example, does anyone remember that time Citibank asked the US to launch an invasion of Haiti, and got it?

9

A powerhouse for 200 years! Citibank is one of the "controlling interests" that occupy the Fed and banking boards, along with Rothschild, Deutsch, BoA, and so on (I haven't kept up on the most recent list of FED participants and bank boards, corrections encouraged they do change names from time to time).

3

The Democrats and DOJ have been doing a Sudetenland with Trump for since halfway through his first fucking term, through the Biden admin, and now. Just let him and his movement do and take what they want in hopes that they’ll calm down if they get what they want so everything can get back to business as usual. Just because it’s an ideological Sudetenland doesn’t make any less stupid

It's the Republicans' job to do fascism. It's the Democrats' job to lose elections and offer minimal resistance against the Republicans' agenda. This is what they've been paid to do; the Republicans started with Reagan, the Democrats started with Clinton.

Since then, it's become not only legal, but incentivized, for them to represent corporate interests over voters' interests.

11

It's nice to see this, the D and R routine gets tiresome.

They don't even fucking hide it, and it still works on many, many people. Too many

4

They're not paid to represent voters.

Although ... if voters crowdfunded a few billion for a bribe, Trump would probably throw them a bone!

1
lemmy.world

No. I'm saying regulatory and legal capture have turned each into separate entities with separate agendas, working toward the same overall goal.

Americans, please take this seriously. It's NOT FUCKING NORMAL for your representatives to take this so unseriously, and not doing the thing they've been literally elected to do. I mean being a politician, not against trump, this goes for both sides of the aisle. wtaf?

I'm not so sure the founders intended for everyday folk to have power, regardless of the flowery language in the documents we know them for. Lately I'm questioning everything I was taught (or hoped) this country was. The more I look at our situation now and compare it to history, I feel like we're on course with the ideals we've demonstrated since our inception.

I just feel incredibly disappointed, disgusted... Lots of things.

Fair enough. I don’t own land, so in their era I would not have a vote. I guess that is somewhat similar to an elitist oligarchy.

I am equally disappointed, disgusted, distressed, apathetic.

2
lemmy.world

The three most populated cities in America are also in the most anti-gun states in the union. It's illegal to even possess the kind of firepower that'd be required for something like that. This is by design, of course.

The only places where you can own that kind of hardware are the harmless rural areas, not near any critical infrastructure, but chock full of electoral votes and underfunded school systems.

0

Inconceivable that someone might do something that's against the law in a situation like that.

1

If the only choice you ever make is to fold than what meaning can time possibly have for you anyways? Every moment is every other moment, all one synchronous performance of cowardly capitulation to fascism.

This same bipartisan group should also be pushing for impeachment. Right? RIGHT?!

6

Absolutely, but Chuck has already pushed back on that. If anyone is olanning on calling their representatives about this, make sure to point that out (and push for new leadership in both houses).

6
lemmy.world

Any war powers resolution passed by the Senate would need to be approved by the House and signed by Trump to have the force of law.

The president is expected to veto any resolution to restrict his power as commander in chief and there are not enough votes in either chamber to override such an action.

While they should be doing anything they can to stop this shit, this whole vote is purely symbolic. Unless they can get support from the house and a supermajority in the senate, no standalone bill will do anything.

The only real leverage they have is a potential government shut down at the end of the month. Given how unpopular a repeat of Iraq and Afghanistan would be, I want to say that it should be fairly easy to find bipartisan support for a deal that would pull any forces out of Venezuala and potentially put some road blocks in place to dissuade further military interventions. You'd just need some competent leadership and a little bit of backbone.

[Exasperated Sigh]

Voter registration. I’ve got some friends that are “old guard” Republicans - we’d disagree on tax rates and small policy matters like that, but at the end of the day they believe in the Constitution. They’re voting straight Dem tickets now, but haven’t officially changed their affiliation with the election office (I think in the hope that somehow the R’s can return to sanity).

4

Maybe they just don't wanted to be rounded up in internment camps. I'd say I was a registered republican right now too if I was in america

2
lemmy.ml

Is it required to register as a voter for a party? Why would anyone do that? Aren't the elections supposed to be anonymous?

1
Makeitstopreply
lemmy.world

In some states you have to be registered as a member of a party to vote in their primaries. In states with open primaries you can vote in primaries without registering as a party member, but they still typically have party affiliation as an option on the form.

3
lemmy.ml

I see, I guess it makes sense for the primaries. Thanks!

2

To add on to that, I have other friends that are lifetime Dems that switched to registered Republicans specifically to vote for the least crazy option in the Republican primary - they always vote Dem in the general though.

2
lemmy.world

Chuck Schumer. Not just a name, but an entire sentence.

22
lemmy.ca

... And impeach the belligerent invader who usurped senate power in order to commit war crimes ?

21

Why next week? They should maybe take a break for a while and give themselves a raise for all of the strategic "lack of work" they've been doing. Maybe things will settle down by then. /s

19
feddit.nl

That's not how that works. They need his permission first.

So they should vote to impeach for murder.

11

Look back on Trump's record with Republicans and rethink that

2

Senate Republicans: "Lol I'd say nice symbolic bullshit but my mouth is full of Trump's dick so I'll just click the Nay button."

11
piefed.world

My guess is they were told it’ll take a week or so to capture all the oil there.

11

They have to all travel instead of just using the Internet to do their job like the rest of the world. What good is a vote on something that already happened?

2

Senate issues decree stating, "No retaliation until next week, and even then, only the absolute bare minimum."

-FTFY

The democrats offer only token resistance, as usual.

10

Maduro and Trump are friends

Maduro gets to escape his country and save face instead of being assassinated or executed.

Trump gets to manufacture a conflict so he can start martial law and become a dictator

8

They literally kidnapped the president and proceeded to threaten the replacement. They don't care.

7
floquantreply
lemmy.dbzer0.com

What's the issue stopping them from meeting today or tomorrow? They can't clear their golfing schedule to do their job and address whether what the president did represents the will of the nation?

2

They don't want to. They want to make sure the oil companies do their business first and then Congress will start voting.

1
sh.itjust.works

The US has been a nation no-one should treat as a serious entity since 2024-11-05, and will not be again until they can prove their ability to hold another legitimate election.

Right now it’s a coin flip as to whether I’ll see that within the remainder of my lifetime.

3
lemmy.world

You definitely SHOULD treat the US as a serious entity. When the government is controlled by psychopaths, it doesn't matter what they intend to abide by. It means that they will use the weapons at their disposal when they so choose.

8
nonentityreply
sh.itjust.works

Absolutely FUCK that. Treating psychopathic bullies as serious entities is appeasement, and provides them vacuous credibility.

The US has been on the losing side of every armed conflict they’ve been involved in for over 80 years, the clowns they’ve currently placed in charge believe that streak is double.

Distance should be applied until shit settles down, isolation if that fails, and ridicule until the populous matures enough to elect representation worthy of respect for once.

-1

I'm not sure what you're definition of a "serious entity" is, but just because the US military has done nothing but fuck up war since Vietnam doesnt make the US non-serious.

Appeasement has nothing to do with it. All of the world's countries need to take the threat of the US seriously. Isolation and ridicule is what the regime wants anyway. If you infuriate the population against you, suddenly the military grows in numbers.

1
Tehbazreply
lemmy.wtf

The US should be completely isolated from the rest of the world, until they hold new and fair elections monitored by international observers; and join the ICC to have their past & present leadership held accountable for war crimes.

1

Here’s the problem as I see it. Trump, Hegseth, and Rubio are deeply overconfident. Trump’s former ambassador was telling BBC that Venezuela is much easier than Iraq. Trump fell into the same mistake as Bush did of thinking the president is unpopular and that the outside opposition is all set to swoop in and replace the government and give Trump everything he wants in oil. This is too tantalizing. The problem is that the new government is not stable, patriots and nationalists and pro-Maduro pro-army forces will resist and fight a foreign occupation. Trump thought he could skirt the problems of Iraq by doing only airstrikes and wrapping up the whole conflict in less than 60 days (so that Congress can be cut out of the whole thing).

Rebels can sabotage the oil lines, that means the need for troops to protect the oil. That will go longer than the 60 day limit; so either Trump will have to find another military or ask Congress for authorization. Trump will likely force Congress to go along; Republicans are too scared to cross Trump and Democrats are afraid of being labeled unpatriotic for not going along with it. The fact is that Dem leaders are being silent on this. The only good take I’ve seen is Graham Platner issuing a statement about how illegal this whole thing is, not defending Maduro or sounding unpatriotic.

Long story short, Congress will meekly go along with Trump’s war as a fait accompli. Nobody wants to be painted as anti-troops or pro-drugs or whatever Republicans will smear them as.

2
lemmy.zip

Weird. I thought only Congress could declare war. It seems that the way it really works is anyone can declare war without Congress by kidnapping foreign leaders and then the Senate has to vote to tell that person to stop.

2

Yep, this is what happened. I cannot believe I exist in the same reality with people this corrupt and people stupid enough to follow them.

1

If they wait until it's over, then they don't have to look powerless when Trump ignores Congress.

2
lemmy.world

So the democrats will do nothing because they’re owned by the same oligarchs and Israeli AIPAC money that the republicans are. The few honest ones will put up a fight but their wings are clipped by the corrupt majority. If they manage to even get close to a victory a few dirty democrats will magically vote with the republicans. Going back to Iraq and Afghanistan the democrats and republicans made a killing on insider trading and no bid contracts. It’s a big club and you and I ain’t in it, It’s all smoke and mirrors. Again it all boils down to shareholder profits.

1

3

Genuinely what could the Democrats actually accomplish in the current situation? They don't have the power. We, the voting public, made sure of that.

1

Thems be the facts. I’ve been watching the country ratchet right for over 40 years and I always vote for the less evil option.

1

Democrats say they'll stand against Trump, they continue to vote for his appointees. Trump does something highly illegal and should be impeached because that's their fucking job, not a whisper of support.
