What a final day! The rumours that Onosato was not fighting and them announcing it before the last couple of matches sure added to the intensity of Kotezakura Vs Aonishki.
The match between them was amazing, it looked like Aonishki was going to get slapped down any second and then he gets that amazing win!
Then it feels like it's his tournament to lose since he seems to have Hoshoryu's number and he wins again with a sort of technique he always seems to hit by getting to his back.
What a crazy exciting tournament and him getting the news he'll be Ozeki for the next tournament is even wilder. I hope he can keep improving and the pressure and obligations after winning don't cause issues.
Looks like that Japan News link automatically pulls a preview image link that's pretty spoiler-y. I didn't realize that could happen. You did a good job not making the post text non-spoiler, tho!
Wow, this was a heck of a tourney. You were cheering for Meisei, right? Didja see his last fight vs Shishi yet? It's not on DonDon but it's on the NHK Japanese site.
I was just concerned for Meisei's health after his dramatic return after surgery. If i have to pick a single favourite it's Takayasu, due to how gracious he was in London. Seems like an absolutely lovely guy.
Yeah the image did turn out a little spoilery. I'll be more careful.
Watching the full NHK highlights now. I guess Meisei's bout was before i woke up to see the live stream.
I thought Kotoeiho should have had Asakoryu so I guess he deserves to stay in Juryo a little longer for letting Asakoryu take what should have been his bout away from him.
Will edit this post if I have more to say about the rest of the bouts.
Edit: Shonanoumi Onokatsu was a low key banger!
The ending of Tamawashi - Fujinokawa was kinda hilarious. Pushes him out with his eyes.
Hiradoumi - Oshoma kinda the same scenario as that Onosato-Aonishiki bout, but in this case the mono-ii gave the win to the guy flying out while his opponents knee met sand. Hmmmm. The only major difference i can see is that Aonishiki left contact with the dohyo a few frames earlier, relative to Oshoma's left foot which left ground just a frame or two before Hiradoumi hit. Also, Hiro Morita sounds particularly hilarious at 0.25x speed.
😮 my face during Takayasu-Yoshinofuji! Just wow!
I watched it in slowmo and I still don't understand how >!Aonishiki teleported behind Hoshoryu.!<

Well then you've probably already seen Shishi henka Meisei. It's pretty funny to see Shishi do that, since he's such a big guy, I wouldn'ta thought he could jump out of the way so fast.

ikr he was like: "dont MAKE me push you out harder!"

I dunno, both of the camera angles I look at make it seem like Oshoma left the ground BEFORE Hiradoumi hit. Maybe there's some camera angle where it shows Hiradoumi hit first. I'm more willing to believe the refs messed up in this case.

Yah that was epic, I cheer for both those guys tho I was favoring Takayasu in that one.

Even before that, I still don't quite believe how Aonishiki defeated Kotozakura. Once K. had him in that grip I thought it was over. The newspaper article you linked to pointed out that A. feinted towards the leg, then when K. shifted his weight, A. pulled him down (while backing up!) That was on another level.
Then came the Hoshoryu bout. The article you cite calls it "a duck under like that seen in Olympic wrestling" which I guess makes sense bc A. has a background in Olympic-style wresting, right? Look at A's right foot just before he circles around. Note that it's pointed off to the side.
When he positioned that foot, he was already setting up to sling himself around H., while H. thought they were going to be slapping for a while longer. H. was just out-classed and one step behind. The whole match was over in 5 seconds.

Aonishiki used Ankle Tap on Kotozakura. It was very effective!
