A lot of the black guys in prison are there for extraordinarily long sentences for extremely minor offences like smoking weed or stealing food from the supermarket, they don't have freedom, they don't gave a family life, all they have is working for the profit of the prison and awful accommodation.
You or I on the outside have at least some freedom to go where we like and be with who we like outside working hours, and might even be able to switch to another job. Not so if you're incarcerated.
I had a plumber do work on my house, and then never cashed the check. Around $1k if I remember correctly.
I needed him to come out to disconnect a 100-year-old radiator that fell off the wall and cap the pipes so we could keep the heat on in the house.
It was an emergency, of course, so I basically called the first person who could come out and do the work. I never really expected to ever be in touch with him again. By the time I realized he didn't cash the check, I no longer had his contact info.
I tried looking up the name on the check, but it didn't lead to anything.
If he showed up today and told me he lost the check, I'd give him a new one.
However, although his work was fine, his whole vibe was a little shady. Like maybe he took the job right before fleeing the country. Either that or he dropped dead.
After about a year I voided the check in my accounting software.
It would be pretty mean to not pay him that point – but technically, I'm pretty sure he cannot legally demand payment after quite that much time. Pretty sure purely civil claims expire after some time of not being pressed.
Once the statute of limitations is hit, they can't legally respond if you refuse to pay. Kind of an odd ethical dillema, but presumably you'd have the money to pay, and the work was done.
Statute of limitations alone would kill any case he has, but even if it didn't, he would be required to be able to show a court proof of debt owed, which it sounds like he wouldn't be able to
Ok let me spell it out. We don't know if it's a few hundred dollars and it doesn't matter. We don't know why he was in prison, but if he got 12 years, it won't be drunk driving. If someone did sth before they're more likely to do it again. You got your work done, and didn't pay up. The guy can use a bit of cash to get back on their feet.
Basically, there is no serious argument why you wouldn't pay the dude apart from you being a massive cunt, both morally and just general self preservation.
