Trump demands ‘no early voting’ in latest threat to upcoming elections as California and New York ballots roll in

Even as he cast ballots by mail himself and launched messaging campaigns encouraging his supporters to do the same, Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to eliminate mail-in voting altogether, baselessly casting doubt on the legitimacy of mail-in votes.

Now he appears to be calling for the end of all forms of early voting.

After publicly demanding the prosecution of his political enemies, Trump encouraged the Department of Justice to investigate the outcome of the 2020 presidential election with “gusto” — and signaled that the “biggest SCANDAL in American history” will “happen again” unless the government eliminates early voting.

States rights. Trump can go lick assholes.

Good.

This is an old talking point from when conservatives were younger and healthier.

This is cutting their own throats because the Fox News set is getting old AF and tend to vote early and by mail.

Latest reports say he's looking into changing the constitution to enable a third term, or at least pretending he'll changed it.

4

he doesn't need to, there is a vice president loophole

Being against having many options to let your vote be heard is very anti-American.

And many/most Republicans. Gerrymandering, limited voting areas, and intimidation at the poll are standard tactics to try and reduce people who might vote against them.

To be fair, Democrats have gerrymandered in history as well. District lines should be an independent determination, not by who is currently in control of a state government.

23

That's called Canada.

We also let criminals vote, and even set up polls inside prison for them because they're (mostly) still citizens.

7

GOP gerrymandering is so severe to the point it eclipses dem states, plus they have numbers on thier side, the amount of states going to gop outstrips blue ones(also for senator positions)

I've talked to enough republicans to understand their problem with the 2 party system is that there's too many parties.

17

Traditionally, the wisdom has been that non-voters lean left, so increasing turnout overall tended to benefit Dems. At least one Pew Research poll found that people who were eligible to vote but didn't were slightly more likely to have voted for Trump (44%) than Harris (40%).

That said, yes, what we need is for Dem voters to definitely vote! (not sarcasm)

This is the level of stupidity we need to be at to get the brainwashed masses to understand what he’s actually doing. Yes, Trump, your messiah, is anti-American and pro billionaires. He doesn’t care about babies or you.

Sure thing. Make election day a federal holiday and allow for mail in ballots.

Honestly I never understood the push for this. Maybe it's because I grew up around people who never had federal holidays off. Tons of people still need to work on federal holidays. What makes way more sense to me would be not having a single "Election Day." Make it Election Week, everywhere, all the time.

21

Yeah there's no point. Just make all elections mail-in, then people can vote at their convenience.

14
lemmy.world

All of the above.

Colorado has early voting, mail-in voting, and places to drop off your filled-out ballot.

It's absolutely beautiful.

If you want to stand in-line the day of, you can do that, too. I've done that a few times, many years ago, and I think my longest wait was maybe 15 minutes, but that was out in the burbs, too.

5

california is the same, plus some people have volunteered thier resident or business as a voting place. Red states banned all these.`

In Canada, your employer must give you 5 hours to go vote on election day. So in most cases, you either start work after 12pm or finish before 4pm. They could also give you 5 hours mid-day, but that's just tedious and not worth the trouble in most cases.

4

I've never had an employer that didn't, and I don't know anyone who has.

1

Its one of the oversites in the constitution in my opinion. It should have stated that all federal elections are federal holidays and congress is empowered to determine additional ones or something like that.

4

No early voting! No late voting! No mail-in voting! No black voting! No gay voting! No brown voting! No veterans voting!

Fuck it, only JD Vance votes! Unless he votes for himself, and then it's massive voter fraud!

43
aussie.zone

The coward really can't stand the thought of a fair contest, can he?

43

He can’t stand the thought of traitor lunatics losing. That seems to be all he cares about.

9

You should have received your ballot by now, if you opted for mail-in. Call your local registrar of voters to make sure that they sent it, or else just go in on election day to do it.

7
lemmy.hogru.ch

They have indeed! You should be receiving countless emails and texts from the SOS as well (kind of love that California pushes people to actually vote).

6
lemmy.hogru.ch

I have a feeling your voter registration isn’t up to date. Probably you’ll have to vote in person for this one.

2
lemmy.world

He needs everybody to vote at polling places on the same day so his ICE thugs can round up antifa. They can’t do that if people are voting by mail or voting early.

33
unalivejoyreply

And also close half the polling places without notice, and stop accepting new votes after 8pm even if there are still people in line.

28
Lodespawnreply

He has a system for rigging voting machines but not envelopes

16

which was dejoy was put in place to destroy it mail in, but he found it was harder to do, because then that would also fuck up businesses and boomer voters who tend to vote by mail.

2
piefed.social

Probably wants all votes on one day to better rig the elections.

16

A bunch of people who will be voting against him are working class, and the insane US system is rigged against the working class so much, people can't get a time off of their jobs to go vote.

11

My fear is to is to have a single day election they could use national guard or something on blue counties to make it much harder to vote, like make special operations on the day of election and create grid locks on that counties.

13

They also want people to only be able to vote on Dominion voting machines, which are coincidentally owned and controlled by a Republican donor/operative.

So rest assured, no tomfoolery there.

12

What I hate so very much is that there is even a chance this asshole's wishes have influence on how we conduct elections anywhere in this country.

He can go fuck himself.

13

No mail in votes? That means your increasing access to in person voting, right? RIGHT!?

8
lemmy.hogru.ch

I’ve filled out my mail-in ballot but I’m seriously considering physically voting on November 4th instead of mailing it in.

As a white California resident I don’t feel I’ll be targeted by the racist “watchers” but I am worried about my mail-in vote being nullified.

8
lemmy.today

maybe in a red county in cali, but they are less rabid than the ones red states.

0

You haven't been in some of those red-dirt, cousin-marryin' mountain counties if you think they're any less rabid. I have family up there and they're no different than other family members who are heavily armed preppers holed up in the Idaho mountains with big stockpiles of canned goods and 12-gauge shells.

2

People, whoever can. Please don't mail in vote if possible. They're sabotaging mail in voting by hurting the post office and sometimes the mail itself. If you can, vote in person

7
lemmy.world

California has very good tools for tracking the status of your ballots. The USPS is also independently funded as a Constitutionally guaranteed service, so it’s relatively safe.

The reason they want to end mail-in and early voting is because it allows them to restrict access, intimidate voters, tamper with equipment, lose ballots, and all manner of other crimes. All voting should be done by mail as it limits their opportunities for engaging in fraud and crime. There is a reason they have been attacking it.

24
lemmy.ca

Oh sure, the constitution, that is totally meaningful. Yep. The Trump administration would never violate the constitution.

5

Safe? They've been destroying mail machines and slowing service. It's a "they have already and continue to do" not they might.

Mail in voting allows them to lose ballots. Often even more readily than in person because it doesn't require election officials being in on it.

Voting by mail is not somehow magically more secure than voting in person.

1

I opt for the mail-in ballot and then drop it off at my county auditor in-person.

9
lemmy.world

He can demand all he wants, the federal government doesn't get to decide how elections work.

6

Well based on how things are going they sure as hell do because there's no one to stop them When they make moves are they're illegal or against states rights

4

It is easier to intimidate voters when they gather in one place on one day. It’s just good time management!

🤮(these fucking people..)

5

"No early voting! You have to go on election day and stand in line for 27 hours! No votes after election day can be counted! Oh we're also removing funding for poll locations, and we're limiting cities to one site for all ballot casting. Only cities though. Rural areas in red states are taking the funding and we're allowing all church going Christian Republicans two weeks to vote and we'll hand deliver their ballots."
