Same. It was the best Reddit app IMO.

I kept using it, until last week ^^"

Same, I emailed the Devs yesterday suggesting a Lemmy port. Guess they already had the memo and worked on it.

I don't think it is, although that's kind of the trade off with premium client apps

lemmy.ml

Oh I had no idea! I just assumed it was closed source because I had to pay to get the Pro version. Still an app worth paying for though

2

If you downloaded Slide off of the google playstore, the premium version was paid as a way to help support the dev. If you downloaded it off of F-Droid, or directly from Github, the premium features were free.

It's copyleft (GPLv3), not permissive, so we do know it'll continue to be Free Software.

Can confirm, it'll be foss, though the code is kinda horrifying :D

8

oh really? yeah lets do this! I still have Slide installed on my phone, excited for Lemmy version

19
lemmy.world

Wow no way... Slide has always been my favorite 3rd party app, and I always felt like the only one using it when I'd mention it on reddit. What an awesome surprise!

Hands down the most/best customization. If anyone complains about the UI, it just means they didn't tweak it enough!

I stopped using it because apparently it had been abandoned by the dev, and switched to Infinity because it's extremely similar, but I loved Slide too. Will definitely use this.

Slide is the very first Android app that pulled me away from Reddit is Fun until Slide got abandoned. To see it resurrected for use on Lemmy would be a dream. I loved Slide interface. Was the app I preferred over Apollo too on Apple aside from the performance issues it didn't get sorted out before being abandoned, which led me back to Apollo.

13

I moved back to RedReader when it was abandoned but Slide was definitely one of the best FOSS reddit apps, so great to see it back.

1
dataterm.digital

OMFG! I love yoo!

I was still on slide until I decided to abandon reddit altogether. I can volunter myself to test.

12

SLIDE WAS THE BEST! It ran under the radar and the dev was MIA for a long time so I had to switch to Infinity but it was the best app I used for Reddit, soooo pumped to see Slimmey

11

Lovely. Slide was (is?) my Reddit app of choice. As an open source app, Slide and Lemmy would go together like peanut butter and jelly.

10

I would give you a hand job on top of whatever the app costs. Slide was the best reddit app until it got abandoned. Slide for lemmy? I just jizzed my pants at the idea

For me, I liked the ability to swipe left and right between subreddits (the order on which you could configure), you could also swipe between posts. It's also open source and pretty customisable. Unfortunately it's not been updated in over a year.

The dev abandoned it cause the code is a bit of a nest, to say the least. Im trying to work on that, cause I really want slide to exist

22

I could never get used to any kind of other 3rd party app because the muscle memory from using slide for years was just too strong. I'm beyond happy to find out about this project!

1

I can't speak for everyone, but I really enjoyed the "get out of your way" style the app has. I also really liked that you had to slide to upvote/downvote on posts instead of having static buttons you can accidentally press. It also had a decent system for switching between multiple accounts. Finally, it's all open source so one could fork it and customize it if they wanted to.

7

The concept of swiping was used everywhere. Makes it quick and easy to use. You could just swipe right to close a thread, or the video/image. No need to use the back button, or reach for the tiny X in the corner.

And the seamless galley mode was awesome. Very unique (only found it quite similar in Joey).

7

I like it because I like the feel of the old Material v1 theme (it seems the most functional to me), and Slide takes it and uses it to its limits.

6

Custom color-coding of subs was nice when you scrolled so far you forgot where you were.

5

I really like it has buttons to jump to previous/next parent comment. It made skimming top comments a breeze.

4

I was the only reddit app I found that really worked with new comments.

what I mean with that is when you read a thread, then come back 5h later it would highlight all the new comments so you would not have to reread all the ones you already read the first time.

such a great feature (maybe others have it too, but from the many I tried non had it in that way)

also great ux with swiping allowed for super efficient navigation

3

I liked that it was available from F-Droid.

There were a couple of other Reddit clients also available from F-Droid (Dawn, Diode, Infinity, RedReader), but I don't remember why I picked Slide over those. All I know is that I didn't spend much time evaluating others and that Slide was "good enough" to not annoy me into wanting to switch.

2

Duuuuude that would be amazing! Loving all the lemmy apps coming out!

9

So glad to see former reddit third party developers and apps rising to the occasion! I sincerely hope that the Infinity devs and other FOSS initiatives are coming onboard too.

8

Wow, that was fast. I love that there's a lot of interest in creating apps for the fediverse.

8
feddit.de

When Slide died slowly I eventually switched to Joey, which is very close to Slide regarding usability. One thing Joey did better was zoomable videos. How cool is that!?

I really hope for a comeback of Slide as an Lemmy app!

8

Same. Slide was sooo good that I was sad to see it abandoned. Joey comes really close and I'd like to see that developer give Lemmy a shot.

3

Slide is all I've used for so long I can't even remember different! I don't go on Reddit anymore, but I've been hesitant to actually uninstall Slide. Love to be able to use it here!

Fk yeaaaaahhhhhh! I can't believe it, we are getting slide and lemmur. Hope someone builds infinity for lemmy

7

True, I was using it for 5/6 months, but before that I used Apollo for years.

To be honest I feel good about Lemmy, It just needs time to popolate.

1

I not sure if it's the right place for suggestions, and I know you didn't ask for any, but I hope you don't mind.

If possible, it would be great to have option to add custom instances, and to add the option to 'force' it to add the instance, even it the app thinks it's not a valid instance.

On Jebora and Lemmur, you can add only some of the instances (the app probably checks a list or smth). Both of them don't let you to add new instances.

Thanks in advace for your work man, really looking forward to it :)

E: some of the new instances

Thank you so much! I tried several Reddit apps over the years and Slide was by far my favorite. I used it up until the blackout when I left Reddit for Lemmy.

When and where can we get this?

7
feddit.de

That would be awesome. Do you have any Git links to track progress? Thanks!

https://github.com/bqv/slide

was a bit apprehensive about sharing it, its really hard to describe how much of a challenge this codebase is. I'm constantly juggling refactoring for maintainability against just "getting something that works", but if you're interested, there you go

9

I know my words may seem hollow. But I am thrilled to see this happen. Slide for reddit was a work of art on user focused ui, and I may of missed it more than I miss reddit.

1

Yes please! even though jebora is nice. i would still prefere to swipe through the fediverse and customize the experience again

7

Yes please, I just uninstalled slide last week. While some things would bug out ocassionally, I couldn't imagine using any other app with reddit. I'm on Jerboa now and its just not the same.

7

Never used Slide myself, but I'm happy to see app ecosystem starting to grow aroung Lemmy! Way to go!

6

Looking forward to see what happens. Slide was my daily driver for many a year.

5

Awesome! I tried various 3rd party reddit apps over the years and stuck with slide the longest. Always liked its simplicity, ux design and focus on pictures. I'm an iOS user though, anything planned for that? (I'm on Mlem beta meanwhile.)

5

Nice. Now if only the Joey for Reddit dev decides to do the same :)

4
feddit.uk

Slide had been my favourite Reddit app.

Will you consider making Slide for Kbin? There seems to be numerous Lemmy clients being developed, but lacking for Kbin.

4
theoryreply
feddit.uk

I will! So far, the reason for that is thst Kbin doesnt expose any kind of API, so any app has to scrape the site, but I would definitely aim for dual compatibility eventually, especially once an API exists

6

@theory

That's fantastic to hear. I've been a Slide user for years and would love to see Kbin supported as well, once it becomes more feasible.

1

When I became interested in open source software I started using Slide but then it slowly turned unusable. I tried many reddig apps and in the end settled for Infinity because it also is open source and it has nice UI (not as nice as slide). After all these years it brings me joy to see anything related Slide.

3

Ohh yes!! Here we go. Slide was the App that started my Reddit Addiction. Best interface imo. Used it till a few weeks ago.

3

Oh yes. Oh baby. Slide is perfection and I have never witnessed such user focused ui.

It's usable without being pandering. I'm pretty much only off of reddit due to it no longer being an option.

2

I still use Slide daily and the thought of making a lemmy port did cross my mind, I'm eager to see the result

1

Wow, I remember having slide like a decade ago, I think. That'd be absolutely beautiful.

1

Slide for Reddit is FOSS (GPL 3.0), although development stopped a while ago. However, since it's FOSS, it should be 100% doable to fork the app to adapt it to Lemmy and since it's GPL 3.0, I believe Slide for Lemmy would have to be at least as permissive (so FOSS as well).

11

Slide was and will remain GPL3 (even though that's not my preferred license!)

3

Jerboa is a Foss app, but it's pretty much beta. So it still has bugs.
