On multiple occasions. Intentionally. They want trumps accusation of local police not protecting them to be true enough for his rationalizations about internal military use and they are trying to get the police pissed enough at them to not show.

Didn't they give a lot of those same police forces IFV's?

Red vs. Blue it is.

15

Not IFV, those have a large gun. They can get APCs or more commonly mraps that are just big trucks with armor.

2

Yeah, I live in a red state. But it's an university town, and the police is pretty chill. (I'm brown, and have a distinctly foreign accent, so I'd know.)

Fortunately, we haven't seen much ICE action yet. As I said, it's an university town, most foreigners are on non-immigrant Visas, so I guess we aren't a prime target yet. But I'm sure our time will come, sooner or later, just trying my best to graduate ASAP and leave this country.

21

You're in a Red state, so that insulates you somewhat. He doesn't want to have disputes with Red state governors. Memphis is the lone exception, with the governor being cool with letting the National Guard abuse his citizens..

So you're probably safe from now, but if your campus starts getting activist, and starts protesting, ICE will show up.

4

seems like they target heavy blue areas, with large population of POCs, we know they rarely target red areas, because the gop and republicans will raise hell over it. also all the "illegal" immigrants are working in plants in rural areas, cant have them running afoul of these rich plant owners, or corporations. farming areas are also less targeted, and most of them have fled the states.

Part of the insistence of ACAB is to push these non bastard cops to do something about their bad reputation, in my opinion. Like, I don’t truly believe most women saying “all men” mean “ALL” it’s meant to fire the men up who don’t want it to be all men.

To a certain extent, “every cog is crooked in a corrupt machine” and some are definitely sticking to that. But in either case, the desired outcome is that the good hearted people will make a change. Either cop as a profession will disappear, and those people give their time to the public in other ways, or the cancer will be excised from within.

As a man, I can confidently tell you, that causes the opposite effect. Just makes you isolate from the group that hates you, obviously. And for me, that's everyone/everything anyway.

-3
lemmy.world

I also know a lot of men who aren't affected by it in this way. If you can't get over the "all men" rhetoric, you're high-key too sensitive. And I'm really fucking sensitive.

4
lemmy.today

Yes I fucking am, and I should be. I don't want or need to be lumped in with this shit, I am fine without more human bullshit. It's bad enough to go work somewhere that you are judged just for trying to eat healthy, I don't have to tolerate any injustice.

"We have an image problem. The issue is clearly people who notice the bad behaviour, not those who do it"

ICE is also operating with "restraint" and "professionalism" as far as paramilitaries go.

Don't let the terrible normalize the bad.

mhaguereply

I think they're saying this is what a paramilitary is. Civilians acting as an illegitimate military; brutality is the default. ICE isn't murdering and raping yet, therefore, they are actually a restrained species of paramilitary. They're a mob sicced on specific targets and so far they've been nice about it. They exist so that we may end up in mass graves, which seemingly isn't happening yet.

By extension, they're saying not to give police too much credit. I assume they're implying that police desperately need reform, and they're descended from pinkertons... from state sanctioned gangbangers. Therefore a good bad guy is just a good bad guy, and not a good guy.

6
lemmy.world

Yes. The job of paramilitaries is extermination and intimidation.

That is their job. They are doing it. That's professionalism.

They aren't going the "quick and dirty" path of extermination by killing them all. Just the troublesome or sickly ones.

That's restraint.

You are pointing at a paramilitary doing paramilitary shit. The problem isn't the level of "professionalism" or "restraint", the problem is that it's a fucking paramilitary.

If you want to name those "police departments operating with professionalism and restraint" I can play this exact same game because it's still cops doing cop shit.

If you disagree, how do you propose one enacts an extermination and intimidation campaign "professionally and with restraint"?

3

Sealioning? Lol. I do admit I'm guilty of a leading question there but that's about it.

No wonder we can't communicate! I'm being mildly pedantic and your definitions are apparently highly personalized.

3

Cops are usually the baddest gang in the hood and the biggest criminal organization in most cities.

1

I've never had that experience. Every police department I've had personal experience with has been corrupt. I have noticed that some police chiefs I've seen on TV seem more professional; but those people are appointed by (liberal) politicians and vetted. I assume most of the rank and file police are envious of ICE. I think if the federal government could somehow assume direct control of police, bypassing mayors, chiefs, etc, they wouldn't really have much push-back from the rank and file.

11

ACAB

Any of these imaginary police departments that work with ‘’’restraint”’ and ‘“professionalism”” could have broken ranks and spoken up about Eric Garner or George Floyd or the MOVE bombings

Their silence is complicity

A simple police operation done by the books is not newsworthy. That can give a skewed impression.

In my opinion, the overall image holds that the US police doesn't do as good a job as police in countries with 2.5 - 3.5 years of training, different screening / application criteria and better pay.

Part of "fixing" the problems specific to the US would be to provide such training as well as a payment that makes it an attractive job for people who would also succeed in a different career. Only way to do that would be to raise taxes significantly for the 1 percent or 0.1 percent.

It would also be necessary to hold them accountable. A "few bad apples" are one thing, but when the system covers for them, it's a systematic problem, regardless of the number. There need to be real consequences for criminal behaviour on the job, all while having a measured response (retraining, warning, ...) for faulty actions that can happen to anyone in the heat of the moment.

3

Oh they train them... It's just "warrior training" instead of de-escalation.

5
mander.xyz

Have any of them stopped ICE from terrorizing their territory?

1

I've heard of a single case where a local cop threatened ICE with arrest if they tried to drive thru a crowd instead of back up and go around.

1

And the local police are not treating ICE the way that the local police would treat me if I used tear gas on them? Selective enforcement is a horrible precedent.

...Who just takes it for some reason. Must be because the masks didn't allow them to assess the skin color of the perps.

If there’s anyone we can count on in the United States for consequence free summary executions it’s the police.

Cops want to be thanked for their service and bravery. Well, here is their chance to actually earn it.

I'm HIGHLY doubdtful that the police will rise to the occasion. I expect them the fully capitulate and switch to the dark side after ICE gives them a couple bloody noses.

Narvik is a pretty good Netflix movie about Norwegian police being pressured to work with Nazis to crush descent and expel/kill minorities.

It was a slur that derives from a word meaning "slow".

I figured.

While we're on the subject, I'd like to take to opportunity to again bring up that dot ml's word filter will remove it even when posting in French.

5

Oof, not a great look for Lemmy if we now have lists of banned words.

Obviously if someone is being abusive and a dick, that's reason to ban or temp ban them. But if there are straight up dumb word filters that we need to walk on eggshells on to appease a specific moderators sensitivities, well, how Reddit of them.

George Carlin gave us 7 dirty words that cant be said on TV

The fact there are WORDS that cant be used in general is we todd did, the mods already removed the comment stating said word.

re·tard verb past tense: retarded; past participle: retarded /rəˈtärd/

delay or hold back in terms of progress, development, or accomplishment.
"our progress was retarded"

Dont say this word, mods will removed because they are a bunch of Todds

You can define slurs all you want but it’s still a slur.

1

Language is fluid and it changes. That word has become a slur because fuck nuts like yourself continue to use it as such.

And sometimes we need stronger language to potray our rage

1

And slurs are not stronger language. They just alienate marginalized groups and make people on the left think you are a shit head.

More accurately they took issue with how you expressed that sentiment. We're all thinking the same thing about ICE.

Hey an answer instead of down votes, thats fucking we todd did

The answer read:

I called ICE agents [redacted] and mods evidently disagreed with that assessment

It was removed by mods with the description

You can call them what you want, as long as you don't use ableist slurs

Because defunct_punk is wrong to suggest that the mods "don't agree". It's just about avoiding the use of slurs.

Let's put it this way: how would you feel about it if the slur being used began with N and derived from a Latin word for "black", or if it began with F and derived from a word for a bundle of sticks?

I do because I'm not a snowflake.

"I was abused and called that in school!"

Yeah, along with 100% of the other kids. It's an elementary school insult.

True we normally base all of our social norms on what happens at elementary recess.
