The GOP ("Grand Old Party" once upon a time in America) was founded... "in 1854 by anti-slavery activists opposing the Kansas–Nebraska Act and the expansion of slavery into U.S. territories. It rapidly gained support in the North, drawing in former Whigs and Free-Soilers." --WP
As I personally understand it, that political party was on the leading edge of progressivism in the USA for ~50yrs or so, a laudable achievement to my mind.
Fast-forward to today, and the complete, utter shitshow of the "Republican Party" we have now is almost mind-blowingly (and even comically) a direct, and complete, total betrayal of its original, noble-minded aims. So NO... these false actors are NOT Republicans, nor the GOP, in any way, shape or form, as I understand the actual terms. They are in fact right-wing extremists as I perceive it, and should be carefully treated as such, not unlike handling live grenades.
In any case, it seems to me that the "GOP" has been drifting in to this sort of complete betrayal of their core values since the time of Nixon (or arguably, even before), and shame on the rest of us for not noticing and taking action. Seriously-- the whole center and left idea of 'trying to be fair-minded, appeasement-oriented, letting the opposition have their say' has turned out to be a complete disaster, n'est-ce pas?
So yeah,
We got played, and played hard. And now here comes the fallout.
Ready...?
Haha, and as a fan-girl of this late, excellent gentleman, here's a little song for the occasion:
Aha! Are you then interested in helping me farm the 2B field? Because that's some low-grade horse-manure you seem to be offering up, good for certain crops. :D
#1 -- something which I didn't actually say.
#2 -- I'd say that completely whiffs on the main premise, however--
I.e. change & progress is natural across all forms of nature that I'm aware, so far.
#3 -- Meanwhile, the deliberate and direct betrayal of the very founding goals of the GOP cannot be hand-waved away in any reasonable universe I'm aware of.
Eh, good luck to you, matey.
Oh! And please do use that specific shit-spreading rake as I've instructed, if you please, sir..?
EDIT: Eh, did I misfire on this one? That would be... MY BAD, if so.
I kinda went all 'apey' right there (as with some of my beautiful relatives), imagining non-existent things for no particular reason.
Anyway, I apologise to you and to u/13igTyme for my idiocy, meanwhile hoping that the MAIN MESSAGE of what I'm trying to say, maybe-perhaps comes through..?
I think the weirdest part of the USA is how Americans elevate their former Presidents to diety-like statuses (especially so with the "founding fathers"). Just admit they were all assholes already.
John A. Macdonald was the "founding father" of Canada but I have to Google his name to remember who he was. He was also an asshole slave owner who shouldn't be worshiped in any way
Feels like it's a bit out of order. Reagan did more damage than W. They both did more damage than HW.
Trump will outdo both by a lot. This will be, by far, the worst presidency in our history. He has potential to do more damage to the country than the Civil War (which wasn't caused by the President.)
Did he? We spent trillions on war, ended up PTSD, built the tech bubble economy, crashed the housing market, AND citizens united.
It's just like, it might not be a sensible comparison when so many of these things wouldn't be possible without the prior. And it really all goes to Nixon being breaking the office .

Yeah, to consider the GOP of Lincoln the same as the current party is to both ignore history and more or less spread propaganda.

He was agreeing with you, dumbass.
Thanks, I was really confused what was going on here.
Sorry about that, Jack. I'm sorry.

Roosevelt was already an imperialist... See Big Stick Ideology
and lincoln was a white supremacist
at least he was less white supremacist than the opposition.
I think the weirdest part of the USA is how Americans elevate their former Presidents to diety-like statuses (especially so with the "founding fathers"). Just admit they were all assholes already.

The USA is a cult
yhea, there's also "presidential libraries" which are mausoleums of expresidents. which is insane each one gets a temple dedicated to them.
in theory they are many to just store archives. but in reality, they are mausoleums.
mount Rushmore as well.
Americans treat their leaders as gods rather than civil servants, and it shows.
thats why I didn't vote for lincoln. those better option people really don't get it /s
The first three were not members of the same party that we call the GOP today. Not since the Dixiecrats split with the Democrats over Civil Rights.
I think hoover is also a vital piece here. He really fucked it up

HW Bush did way more damage than people seem to realize.
Every single one of them did.

Citizens United could be to blame for this entire timeline. That's true.
PATRIOT act and DHS too.
The older I get the more it leads back to nixon. Would not be surprised if citizens united was the end of an idea from his administration.
I mean yeah effect wise I would only put bush junior before nixon but using the timeline of presidents works well enough
lincoln wasnt the ancestor of the current GOP.
Ideologically no but in name certainly and don't they love to drag that horse out to shoot it again don't they?
Obvious, yet delightful
this is a rare time I actually go out of my way and upvote.
Gerald who?
of Riva
Isn’t that Geralt?
