US government shuts down after Senate fails to advance both parties’ bills

The US government shut down on Wednesday, after congressional Democrats refused to support a Republican plan to extend funding for federal departments unless they won a series of concessions centered on healthcare.

The GOP, which controls the Senate and the House of Representatives, repudiated their demands, setting off a legislative scramble that lasted into the hours before funding lapsed at midnight, when the Senate failed to advance both parties’ bills to keep funding going.

"Republicans are plunging America into a shutdown, rejecting bipartisan talks, pushing a partisan bill and risking America’s healthcare,” top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer said on Tuesday evening, as it became clear a shutdown was inevitable.

That first paragraph seems deceptively worded. Without reading between the lines it appears to pin blame on Democrats while being vague on details about the healthcare concessions.

That's a shame, I expected better of The Guardian.

The UK is sitting on the knife's edge of fascism as well. Somehow Starmer is in charge and Farage has no fear. That head of lettuce was better.

Assuming there is an “after”, there really needs to be a policy against politics on official government communications. There probably is. One more thing to hold them to account in 3.5 years

Assuming you have a true democratic election in '28 and not some Putinesque version.

Not that exactly. While yes, I also dread the possibility of the end of democracy …… elections are run by states (so far). Unless there is actual martial law, many states will continue to hold fair elections.

Interference will look different. As always red states will continue to disenfranchise voters, nationwide propaganda will increase. So will there be attacks on state certification, on who is allowed to be listed as a candidate, etc?

  • If Trump’s pet Supreme Court continues to rule that it might be against the constitution but we’ll allow it for now, he could be listed as a candidate.
  • If red states continue to disenfranchise voters, regressives hold their monopoly on the state despite being smaller minority.
  • if even one blue state’s election certification is claimed invalid, that’s a lot of electoral votes that suddenly disappear

What do we do if this happens?

Repeat after me, "Trump and the GOP controlled congress are shutting down the government in order to prevent the Epstein files from being released."

Ah yes, obviously the Democrats fault for not bending to the fascist budget plan....

From watching almost any news program, that's basically the impression I get, even if it's not actually said. It's disgusting...

They'll spend tens of millions of dollars on a fucking ballroom but suggest giving americans healthcare and they'll allow the entire government to shut down.

Can’t forget paving the rose garden to make an eXcLuSiVe ClUb. Now not only do we get “lobbyists” but also “club members.”

Pathetic douchebags.

13

Oh no, the guy that 70 million dipshits voted in for his deal-making abilities refused to make any deals with the democrats and they didn’t vote for the spending bill as a result.

Republicans, specifically Donald Trump, have more government power than any administration in modern history. Control of the white house, senate, house, and supreme court, in addition to simply acting outside the law with impunity

Yet they'll still blame Democrats for the shutdown

Editorialized headline. The linked article's headline is "US government shuts down after Senate fails to advance both parties’ bills"

13

The Guardian updated the headline. I have changed the headline here to reflect that.

Thanks for the head's up.

I want them to be released as much as the next person, but does anyone really think Republicans will do anything other than masturbate harder over their leader being a child rapist? It's a known fact by this point that his name appears very frequently in the files

7

Anything Trump threatens to shut down as a result are things he was already gonna shut down as soon as an excuse came along. Do not cave on keeping healthcare funded, that would destroy so many Americans who depend on this.

3

Nothing. We wait several weeks, and then pay WAY more money to put things sorta back together until next time.

Love the "Democrats refused to support a Republican plan". Just say "Democrats failed us all".

I get it, but you just did the same thing as the guardian.

Their blaming a group that has zero power to due anything. The bias is sicking and annoying.

Dems absolutely could do something, the Republicans needed a handful of them in order to break the filibuster (60 votes I think).
