Do you fear the pop-open dough cans?
My partner just brought me three pop-open dough cans. They absolutely cannot stand the surprise from opening them. Basically the same hatred for the Jack-in-the-box toys. It's such a strange thing to me that I'll never understand.
Yes. I always open them like I'm diffusing a bomb.

I live alone and one of these biscuit containers popped open inside my fridge by itself! It was pretty loud as it rattled a bunch of other glass in there, but I didn't realize what it was at first. I was sure someone banged on my window and was super paranoid all night. Scared the hell out of me lol so dumb.
When quite young, I had a book of urban legends. Among them was one where circumstances forced a woman to buy groceries in a neighborhood full of people who frightened her. The air conditioner in her car was broken, but she was so afraid of being approached that she kept her windows rolled up tight.
Suddenly, she heard a loud pop and felt a spray of wetness from the back of her head. She was absolutely convinced she'd been shot and changed her route to head immediately to the nearest hospital, even calling them on the way to let them know to expect a GSW.
When she arrived, she found a very concerned medical crew waiting for her. They spent a few minutes examining her, then relaxed, laughing. Frustrated, she asked what was so funny.
According to the urban legend, she had not, in fact, been shot. Instead, with her windows up and AC out, the heat inside the car had grown enough to burst one of these biscuit containers, covering her hair in dough.
Mythbusters covered this, and it was plausible!
I can't remember what they said about the actual woman, but the can placed in Adam's car popped :D
Yeah, I believe that; any pressurized, sealed containers will pop if heated enough. Those dough cans don't have very thick walls, either.
Yep. The 'heated enough' was the main thing they tested for. They had the car in a garage and pointed heaters at it to find out if the can would pop at a realistic temperature for a car on a sunny day :)
It doesnt even need to be heated, ive had them pop in the refrigerator.

My partner is, so I open them. I've found it's usually barely a light puff. Maybe it's changed over the years before I swear I remember it being a loud pop in the past.
What you describe is usually the case, but every once in awhile, a person is granted a mini sonic boom.
I yell "allahu akbar" before I pop it.
"aloha snack bar!"
I just wack it profusely on the edge of my counter (at arms distance, of course). 👀
That was how the instructions said to open them a long time ago.
I bet there were multiple injuries and deaths from the violence of the doughsplosions. The lawsuit settlements must have been pretty expensive for Pillsbury to change the instructions to what they are now. Probably with gag orders and hush money, which is why you can't find a record of them. /s

I had one years ago that blew just from peeling the paper back like half an inch. Surprised me so bad I dropped it, watched as it rolled into a clump of dog fur, and now it always feels like I'm disarming a bomb or something.

I'm the same way though I've learned to tolerate it over the years. I just don't like to be startled, it's uncomfortable and feels like getting electrocuted.
Semi-topical rant:
I don't watch horror movies unless they're the sort that doesn't rely on jump-scares, for the same reason. Being startled is not being scared -- it's simply being alarmed. True fear for me resides in foreboding, strangeness, breakdown of reality, inexorable consuming darkness, alien minds.
We talked at length about it this morning. Similar response too. Ever since I've known them, they've hated balloons, for instance. POP!
I think I'm just realizing how differently people's bodies react to being startled. For some, it must be more extreme than I realize. I'm not saying I don't startle, but my body simply doesn't react as harshly. And I think that's the key. 💜

Oh, lots of things come in those types of cans. I'm not talking about any specific one. Different kinds of biscuits, cinnamon rolls, croissants, and etc.
Twist the can. It won't pop.
