@[email protected] You're going to buy a new handle/latch set and replace it. It's super easy, and all of this stuff is standard, so you don't have to figure out "which one you need" really. The Philips screws there obviously have to come off. The little hole in the bottom of the handle conceals a screw that holds the handle on (both sides). That might be a Philips, might be an Allen.

The latch plate comes off, the handles come off. Behind the round trim pieces, there will be some more Philips screws that hold another bit in that has to come out. Once that's out, the latch will slide out the side of the door.

Installation is reverse of removal. Seriously, this is an easy and cheap fix, even if you have to buy a couple of tools, too. Everything you need will be at your local home improvement store.

Just to add to this - you might find there's 3 different depths of the latch mechanism bit (the bit inside the door), so take the existing one out first to help getting one the same size.

Definitely do that.

So the first part I can answer - see that hole on the right under the handle?

There should be a little screw bit in there you can tighten or loosen using an alen key. It looks to be missing.

Odds are it just fell out (look on the floor nearby) - sometimes years of motion just does that.

As for the second part, no idea XD

I think it's called a grub screw, take a photo of the door handle and head to a local hardware shop. Odds are they'll be happy to help if you ask, and the photo will lend a hand on size.

I had this happen once, and it turned out to be the handle was screwed too tightly causing the latch part to stick.

Best of luck!

Take the door off it's hinges and turn it upside down

That'll stop the handle from hanging down

Was going to recommend this as well.

The latch (gold part that holds the door closed) looks stuck inside. It's caught on the bottom if you look closely. As a temporary fix you should just be able to nudge / wiggle it up with a butter knife or similar and hopefully it'll pop right out.

If that doesn't happen give me a poke.

In between the "ZOO"s that little springy thing, try and push it towards the top, any way you can make that happen ougta be fine.

Also, if it actually is aligned and that doesn't help (it's a little hard for me to see in this pic) it could just be gunky in the back of the assembly. If that is the case spraying an oil like Ballistol in the cracks and wiggling it may help.

No the tldr is I definitely need to replace the latch. One screw is totally stuck but some builders opposite are hopefully going to come and loosen it for me. Then I'm determined to replace the latch myself.

As someone else said, this is seriously an easy project. The two screws you can see in the picture, loosen the set screw in the handle (the little hole on bottom). Pop the handle off, pop the solid metal ring off the door. That'll expose 2 more Phillips head screws. Take the handles out, the latch will slide out.

I literally did 8 of these this weekend. When buying a new knob, you can get knob, handle, locking, or not locking. Any version should fit

Only tools needed are a phillips head screw driver, and probably an alen key set for that set screw. Both cheap tools that are great to have. Might need a flat screw driver to help pop off those metal rings at the handle base

WD40, spray that shit inside every opening and your door will be as new...

-3

Start with WD40 to clear out the crud, possibly taking the handle apart for cleaning, then use 3-in-1 oil for lubrication.

Using just WD-40 will get them back to the same problem once it evaporates.

8

I love wd40, but it's more a cleaner than a lubricant. It will dry up unlike actual lubricants.

5

WD40 is a degreaser. Which cleaning out the old lubricant is how it helps.

After you need to spray in fresh clean graphite lubricant for these sorts of mechanical movements.
