Yea, I really loved RiF, so I hope we get Lemmy is Fun. Was a paid user and would support again.

1000%. I'm currently using Jerboa for Lemmmy, which is pretty similar, but I loved RiF's UI and general "no frills" layout.

If TalkLittle came out with a Lemmy/Kbin browser, I'd get it in a heartbeat.

11

Jerboa lacks a lot of customization features but hopefully it keeps improving. Sync was my absolutely favourite though and if LJ can replicate those features in the lemmy app it'll be a no-brainer for me to use Sync.

Yeah every single app I've tried so far, and the web UI, has this "modern" design aesthetic which basically means a lot of wasted screen space and having to scroll more to see what could easily fit on the screen at one time.

Best thing about RIF was the density of information, which you could customize how you see fit. Waiting patiently for an app in that vein

5

That is what was so great about Apollo too. It was like a whole different experience from their disgusting app made from the charred remains of Alien Blue.

Infinity for Reddit was my 3rd Party app of choice, boy what I would give for Infinity for Lemmy, seriously hoping

6

Same with Infinity for Android, though I did use Sync on iOS.

This is really cool for Android users. If Apollo came to lemmy, that would be the biggest kick in the teeth for Reddit.

Would be great to have other mobile apps fill the gap, so that the devs can focus more heavily on the main site instead of Jerboa.

15

FWIW, I highly doubt the devs are focused on anything but the Lemmy API right now. In fact, I also doubt they’ve slept in a month.

25

For sure, even so, it'll be good to have a really solid mobile app option that doesn't take any of their focus in the future.

12

Yeah, lemmy.world user count doubled between 6/12/23 and 6/16/23. At this rate it could triple by today, reaching around 39,000. Thanks devs!!!!

Wow this is huge. Should bring a ton of new users. Spez really shittin his pants now

13

Brilliant. I love the Boost client and having it would significantly increase my Lemmy usage.

3

Omg this is amazing, I was actually a longtime Boost user but didn't want to rain on the Sync parade in this thread.

On another note, I never received a notification about this reply, just noticed it now. I would assume that has something to do with the server strain at lemmy.ml?

Edit: I'm sorry, I can't find the link to the boost community. Please send it over when you get a chance.

Awesome. I uninstalled Sync after they stated it would be going down on July 1st because of the updates. It was the a great app. Looking forward to this.

10

You should be able to keep it alive for some time by patching it with revanced.

I'll use Sync until the world stops turning.

It's the best app UI/UX wise in terms of customizability. Basically, everyone wins.

1

This is absolutely fantastic news! Sync was pretty much my only way of browsing reddit for a long time. This should make the transition much easier.

BTW: Hi everyone, that's my first comment on Lemmy!

9

This is exciting! Glad to see Lemmy will be getting so much more attention!

9

this is awesome. i'm a paid (no ads) user, and will definitely support sync if there's a lemmy client.

ps. thx for linking to old.reddit.com ;)

Man, I know it's a different app but I'd be so thrilled if the Boost dev decided to jump ship and make a Lemmy app. I tried so many reddit apps and Boost ended up being everything I wanted and more.

8

Agreed I tried so many reddit apps on android and boost was my favorite too.

2

Any app right now would be great. The web needs some UI tweaks. I hope Apollo comes to light.

8

im on iOS but this is amazing!! i was on android for a long, long time and Sync was my go-to. Thank you, Laurence :D

8

This was my favorite Reddit app. So happy to see it coming to Lemmy now that I've moved on from Reddit.

Sync for Reddit is a very popular Reddit client. This is the Lemmy version.

It's an app that lets you view and comment on lemmy (previously Reddit) on android with a very smooth and versatile interface. Lots of great tools for customisation and feeds.

You should be able to group communities together and hide already read posts. Lots of theming and other things as well.

6

Ah so like Jebora but much better. That is good news very much needed.

1

Like to be notified so I can try it out. Maybe RIF could try one too. Call it LIF.

7
lemmy.world

Can someone tell me what advantages Sync has/had over Slide or Infinity? These are the two apps I've been using.

6
lemmy.world

It's entirely about your UI preferences, really. Most third party apps had feature parity, and the features they didn't have were more niche. You could find something each of them did especially well, but the vast majority of features an average user could want were present in all of them. Boost was my preference for a more graphical experience, and RIF was my default for its simplicity.

Sync has an extremely vocal fanclub because its dev is very involved with the userbase directly, but it's really not much different from the other graphical ones save for its MaterialYou integration, if that's something you care about. It's as respectable an app as the others.

If they had longer than 10 days to live I'd suggest trying each one to see which fits your preference....but...

18

So I see it's not open source... That's a weird combination for Lemmy, to be honest... Unless the author changes their mind.

As an extensive user of Sync let me say.

The ability to customize change layout, Twitter previews in posts, ability to open comments, subreddits in windows.

It's ability to cache comments/threads/videos. So, if android decides to kill Sync due to limited resources I can start where I left instead of having every thing reload from scratch. And lots more. The dynamic Material you theme and the beautiful UI should not be forgotten.

It's multi windows feature with its caching feature made it indisputable for me. I had anywhere from 3-6 windows or more active to jump back in anytime. If he brings that to lemmy it would make interacting with lemmy that much more awesome. Waiting to see what's he got in store for us.

Here's a screenshot to show what I mean by multi windows:

This works, but it's very amnoying to write for long urls on mobile. I seriously hope we get a "subscribe on external community" button added at some point, so that we don't have to do this stuff when direct linked to a communty.

2

It’s great to see adoption exploding like this. I’m expecting to see a lot more third party Reddit apps making the jump to Lemmy over the next few months. Exciting times!

4
lemmy.ml

it's disappointing seeing so many people here excited about something that is not (and apparently not planning to be) free open source software :(

4

I def prefer people contribute to the existing open source apps (or make new ones), but overall the more the merrier. I'm happy when anyone builds something for the lemmy ecosystem.

8

I think it's more of people wanting to stick with the developers and apps that they have used on reddit. Some of which have been using and supporting for almost a decade. It also means more of an endorsement for Lemmy, as some reddit sync users wouldn't consider Lemmy otherwise. Lastly, a significant number of power users (those that actually post, comment, and otherwise contribute) use third party apps over the official app, meaning that having support for these apps on Lemmy will hopefully bring over quality users and not just a larger quantity users.

That's my take on it, and I am someone very pro open source.

2
kbin.social

What is this? I'm not sure if I'm looking at the right "Sync" app, there seems to be a lot x_x

3

sync for reddit is what you're looking for, it doesn't have a lemmy release yet. He says he plans to have one out in the next few weeks.

5

That's too bad, I moved to boost from sync awhile ago because I didn't like the way the dev of sync was constantly changing the ui and then announced he was going to put some future features behind another (subscription) pay wall, despite being told when you buy the app thst you'd have access to all development features.

1

Baconreader as of now isn't moving to Lemmy either ☹️ big sad here, probably my favorite interface.

1

Yes! I've been using Sync since 2012 and would happily pay again for a pro version for Lemmy.

2

Fantastic news. Hope other reddit third party devs consider it too. One of the best news of this reddit migration. I had put my Android third party apps in a folder I labeled RIP. Sync will at least be one that will be reborn again.

2

Very pleased to hear this. Using Sync until 30th then stuck with desktop for Reddit. Happy to have Lemmy get a quality app behind it like Sync.

2

Of course Reddit wants you to either sign in or use the app to view the subreddit. I've never used any 3rd party app for Reddit, using Jerboa currently for Lemmy. Curious what Sync will bring!

2

Sync for Reddit is a popular reddit 3rd party app. Since Reddit is gonna kill them, the developer decided to do Sync for Lemmy instead, but is gonna take him 3 to 4 weeks to get some kind of beta.

8

Sync is a popular third party app for Reddit.

MVP means minimum viable product. Basically, the simplest thing that will do the job.

It says subscribe pending when I subscribe to those from here

1

Great! I think Infinity for Reddit is considering the same. Same for Troddit which I use on my desktop

1

So exciting! Hope for other devs to see the positive reaction for this and consider making lemmy + kbin versions of their apps too!

By the way, is there a working Lemmy client in the iOS app store that is out of testflight?
