I feel like in the moment, one would want to overdo it rather then underdo it. Particularly if the thing in its mouth is your other arm or leg.

I mean that would be my instinct but what if they have like a pressure point there that requires a specific amount of force that happened to be approximately the same as a light tap?

they work like those trash bin lids, push it until it clicks and it unlatches to swing open, then push it down again and it clicks closed

I went to an alligator themed tourist attraction in Florida years ago where a man would hover his hand inside an alligator’s mouth - he claimed that if you don’t touch their palate, the alligator’s bite reflex will not be triggered.

Now this man had about 4 fingers on both of his hands combined, so take from that what you will…

If it bites your arm you just bonk it with your other arm and repeat the cycle until it's tuckered out.
