Wow, I knew godot had a lot of potential for general app usage too (its a great Dev environment in a lot of ways) but I hadn't predicted "AAA games use Godot as mod editor." The idea of just using it as an open source interchange format for loading into proprietary engines is... blowing my mind a little. I kind of hate it.

The video won't play unless I sign in, which I don't want to do. How is Godot being showcased? Is the new Battlefield made in Godot?

Googled around. Looks like Godot is being used as the basis for user created content. So I imagine they updated Frostbite to be able to ingest Godot formatted level files and whatever other needed Godot exported files into their "User Generated Content" portal. It's not clear to me how much power they'll give users for what users will be able to import from Godot created content. This is all supposed to be a part of the live service aspect of the game so it sounds like monetized user mods/content. I imagine that the scripts they'd support would be limited

Seems to be that you'll be able to run scripts, and maybe import custom assets. In which case it'll be like the fortnight editor in UE5.

Neat. But I doubt battlefield will run through proton so I will not be deving for it 😂 wild to see from EA though

It, being the game, will certainly run through proton... basically everything does, just give it 3 to 6 months for patches to happen.

What won't run is their entirely unneccesary kernel level anti cheat.

Because running a closed source game as root is a fucking terrible idea, that compromises your system's security and integrity.

Alas, their anti cheat prevents proton for at least the recent EA titles ive tried (Madden). I should have kept reading. Yeeeee you are spot on, friend

Kernel Anti Cheat is functionally a marketshare boon to MSFT, to prop up their shitty bloated spyware OS.

... and I am saying that as someone who used to work for MSFT.

Do everything possible to keep people on Windows, make it annoying or difficult for them to leave.

Hopefully I do not need to mention that Kernel AC doesn't even work. Point me at a game with Kernel AC, give me 30 minutes, I'll find you a working hack/cheat engine/method for sale, which, even more ironically, 99/100 times only work on Windows, not Linux.

Agreed 100 p. Its all bullshit and dangerous to boot. I'll stick to Linux and not have to deal with MS bullshit

The even more insane part is that EAC and BattleEye have supoorted linux via proton for 3 or 4 years now.

Just... hardly anyone bothers to use this support, which they are already paying for, by licenscing EAC and BattleEye.

Almost every single AC currently in use has at least one game where its used, and is working on linux, no problems.

It is entirely possible to get AC to work on linux, I have been digitially screaming this for years, it is nice to find someone who is listening, lol, my thanks to you.

Lemmy has some likeminded folx. Nice to see. Same to you!

Shame that they also announced to be actively not supporting/banning Linux users, which probably rules out a lot of users who are familiar with Godot.

Also, I'm not familliar with all the dev companies BF has so I may be wrong, but I don't think I see any of them in the Godot sponsors list.

I know that's not how FOSS works, but it still sucks in this case. But, at least it will introduce new generation of modders to Godot, so that's a plus.
