Hi, Clevelander here. I have no horse in this race, but thanks for making Mamdani go from being completely unheard of from me, to now a household name due to the Streisand effect.

Thanks for letting me know who I'm voting for in 2028.

He can totally run against Trump for his third term. If Orange Chicken tries that, there are no rules anymore anyhow.

Supreme Court’s got baby don’s flaccid chode down their throats, so no rules for him but others unfortunately…

From what I heard from someone's testimony, it can't reach the throat.

If trump remains in office beyond his second term it'll be in the absence of elections

I agree with the sentiment, but it's individuals and businesses paying the federal taxes in NYC. You'd have to somehow get them all to agree to put their personal freedoms at risk by not paying their federal taxes

Donald Trump knows he faces no personal risk by withholding funding, because the SCOTUS has declared him immune. He can break any law with impunity

42

Well, the IRS uses regional IRS offices which would be easier to disrupt if a large number of states such as KY, MO, and NY participated, and there is some talk of something like that happening soon in WI, NY, MD, and CT as a result of Trump withholding federal funding for programs which were passed by congress.

This definitely isn't a battle Trump would want to escalate if he were smart.

So, NYC gets about $100B in federal funds annually. I wonder how much they pay in taxes to the federal government. I'd bet they pay more than they get.

The problem is that federal income taxes are generally paid directly by employers to the federal government. It's not clear by what mechanism states and/or cities might withhold them.

It's true that the State of New York, and NYC are both large employers, so hypothetically I guess they could refuse to collect income taxes from their employees on behalf of the federal government, but certainly the IRS would still hold the individual taxpayers responsible for those taxes at the end of the year.

If it gets to the point where the States are withholding money from the federal government, I'd wager it's because they no longer view the federal government as legitimate. I guess, good luck to the IRS trying to collect?

What would stop the IRS from sending federal agents arresting people on the streets? We've already seen ICE doing it without badges, uniforms, or warrants

This is the problem with a dictatorship. They have too much power. They can do whatever they want

What would stop the IRS from sending federal agents arresting people on the streets

I thought they fired all of them?

With our communications, transactions, and travel all recorded, and soon to be fed into AI for threat assessment, it’s going to be very difficult to organize without predicted leaders getting MLK’d.

2

The state is a pretty big employer, so that portion might be held back for a while. That would still have to be paid by the end of the year, though.

3

As a New Yorker I would like to see that orange fascist try. I can almost guarantee that if Zohran organizes a workers militia today itll have tens of thousands of volunteers tomorrow. I myself would happily throw arms with federal pigs.

It start when terrible people in power have decent support for part of population and the other part fight for freedom by any mean

I would like to see that orange fascist try

Yanking funding from state and local agencies is almost trivial, thanks to the DOGE infestation of the US Treasury. Quite literally a matter of button-clicks.

The dream of the Unitary Executive under Bush, has finally been realized under Trump 2. Congress simply could not stop handing the Executive branch more and more authority, both implicit and explicit, until now they're effectively superfluous.

The one upside is that - given the state of Trump's BBLB - there may not be much funding left to pull from NYC by the time they're done gutting the domestic budget.

The executive has so much power because the Republicans in congress are his complete bitches. And they are in charge.

2

Republicans in congress are his complete bitches

Trump governed under a Dem Majority from 2019-21. He may well get another Dem Majority in '27, given his abysmal approval numbers.

Nevermind how many times I've had to hear "You need 60 votes in the Senate to do anything" under Biden and Obama. Seems it is always the Republicans fault, whether bills are obstructed or flying to the president's desk with a simple majority.

1

B...but the Republicans PROMISED that they wouldn't touch medicare or social security.

Are you saying they lied?

Are you saying conservatives are liars?

Came here for this and I wasn't let down, you punny quipper you.

A talented artist should combine Zohran Mamdani's campaign photo and the movie posters for "Conan the Destroyer" and "You Don't Mess with the Zohan" to produce a "Zohran the Destroyer" meme image.

4

Oh yeah go to war with New York and Cali, see how that goes for you.

33

Sounds good to me!

NY was the eleventh state in the US. We’d become the eleventh province of Canada, nice!

15

Trump can suck a dick. Lousy bastard has got megalomania so bad it would be a worldwide disservice to allow him to continue

21

That's called fascism.

Time for the wealthy blue states to break away.

You don't bite the hand that feeds.

20

Any state or local gov that is cut off from federal funds without a legal basis shouldn't have to pay federal taxes.

20

Insurrectionist traitors who should have been impeached, fired, and sent to federal prison don't get to tell anyone how to behave. New York pays more into federal taxes than it receives, if Trump wants to kill Blue State programs he's about to learn where the tax money comes from.

I just need the answer on record. I'm fine with protesting. However if the sitting president can steal money from the people bc of party difference, yeah violence will be the correct response.

Disclaimer: I am not calling for violence, mods.

2

Yup.

It's balkanization for the Un-united States.

Cool experiment while it lasted.

6

Trump is white supremacist extremist pornography in my opinion.

New York state should require anyone wanting to consume media of Trump online should have to give NY state two pieces of ID and wait for NY to verify them being ovr 21 or be blocked.

15

“He’s a radical left lunatic,” Trump said.

Says the radical fascist lunatic. Projection is omnipresent in this new Nazi Führer Cult party.

12

Cool, maybe we'll stop giving charity to all the red states then. NY can be self sufficient. Shit hole red states can't.

9

They bring in more taxes than they spend, "cutting them off" will only benefit them as long as they are smart enough to keep the revenue in state.

4

“This guy” is likely going to be mayor of New York, joining the likes of Ed Koch, Rudy Giuliani, Michael Bloomberg and Eric Adams.

As such, he’s making headlines everywhere, although the spin is all over the map.
