Canada passes law fast-tracking nation building projects to counter Trump

Canada's parliament has passed a landmark bill giving Prime Minister Mark Carney's government new powers to fast-track major national projects.

The One Canadian Economy Act was passed by the Senate on Thursday, and allows the cabinet to streamline approvals processes and bypass certain provisions of federal laws for projects that could boost the economy.

Supporters have argued the legislation is a critical step in reducing Canada's dependence on the United States, amid trade tensions sparked by President Donald Trump's tariffs.

Spoiler alert, the law mirrors trumps policy more than it counters his policy. Disregarding environmental protections and disrespecting first nations rights sounds like a textbook trump move.

I get what you mean, but by "counter" they're talking about countering Trump's attempt to leverage Canada's dependency on the US to destroy our economy — not whether the policies are similar or not.

Dunno about "can" because I'm not smart enough to come up with plans, but we definitely "should."

We have many alternate routes toward national self-reliance, but they aren't neoliberal enough for bankers and oligarchs... Carney's main clients.

As a simple example, the housing crisis really started to hurt when the Mulroney and the subsequent neoliberal governments withdrew from social housing. This is not an isolated issue, look around the world and observe that the only governments dealing with the problem are actively committed to publicly owned housing on a grand scale.

We can decommodify our way out of many false or unnecessary scarcity issues. An additional economic multiplier at a time of need would be the keynsian stimulus of unions building out our solutions.

Of course, this is contrary to letting the Market decide, so nah. We get commodity solutions at fake discounts. More capital flowing upwards until it's too late.

I hope that you don't all find yourselves with your own version of this guy, with too much unilateral authority... Good luck neighbors in the North

Nah I'm pretty sure Carney is a real one

That’s the problem with laws though, they tend to outlast their leaders. I’d hate to think what a different leader might do with the ability to bypass such checks and balances. I like the bill in spirit but not execution.
