Welcome to Lemmy.zip
Hello to all of our new users.
I wish we could all meet in better circumstances. The closing of lemm.ee is a real blow to the fediverse, and I have nothing but the greatest respect for the lemm.ee admin team. Lemm.ee was a cornerstone of the lemmy community, and set a high bar for moderation and technical performance.
Finding a home on the fediverse can be tough. Whether you're here to lurk, post, moderate, or contribute in your own way, we’re glad you’ve joined us. Lemmy.zip might not replace what was lost, but we hope it can become a lemmy instance where you can feel at home.
Everyone should receive a welcome PM when they sign up to Lemmy.zip from the ever-present dark lord overseer friendly bot, ZippyBot. However, in case poor Zippy has been overworked and forgotten to send the PM to you, here's some helpful information regarding Lemmy.zip!
-
All of our policies can be found at legal.lemmy.zip. This includes our Code of Conduct. Please (please!) have a read of this. Our number 1 rule is
Remember the human! (no harassment, threats, etc.). We absolutely adhere to this. Treat people with respect. -
When you created your account, we set up some "Default Blocks". If you want a more unfiltered Lemmy experience, you can head to your account settings and remove the blocks. You can read more about this in our Welcome Post - they are currently hexbear and lemmgrad.
-
We have monthly updates! You can read the latest one here!. We're always open to suggestions if there's anything else you'd like to see in these.
-
We have some metrics around federation for the curious among you. The link is in the sidebar or you can click here!
-
We have our status page at status.lemmy.zip. In the unlikely event the server becomes sentient and starts a robot uprising, full details will be available here.
Finally, your admin team is myself (Demigodrick), Sami, Druid, and Gazby. Please reach out to any of us if you feel you need help or support with anything. We also have a support email - [email protected].
If you have any questions, please let us know and we'll do our best to answer them.
Thanks,
The Lemmy.zip Admin Team
Just pinning this - we are getting a little battered by people importing their data from lemm.ee.
If you get a timeout or a rate limit error, please try using a VPN to upload it 😊
If this doesn't work, feel free to shoot us a PM or let us know!
Good luck!
Hi, non- lemm.ee newcomer here. I'm trying to import settings from srlpnk. It's throwing an immediate error, not a timeout (though I have gotten some rate limit messages). I took a look at the json file, and I think the problem may be trying to reference avatar etc images on slrpnk.net. Looks like I may be able to delete the strings and replace them with
:null, but with you guys getting slammed I didn't want to further gum up the works. Figured I'd run it by yas for input first. No rush, thanks!Hey - lots of new things we've not seen before being uncovered. Feel free to give it a shot (backup the old version first!) And let us know if it works or not. If that is the issue, I'll log an issue with the lemmy devs as I'm sure it'll help someone in the future
Well, my instinct was wrong, still says error importing file. Could be a number of other things (version mismatch maybe, the export file is from back in January) but without being able to see the actual error I'm just shooting in the dark. If you have the time and are willing to help troubleshoot that would be awesome, if not I understand. Worst case scenario is that I spend a few minutes rebuilding subscriptions and a long long time rebuilding the block list lol. Thanks either way!
Well I made a fresh export now that slrpnk is back up, and everything imported without issue. So that's cool.
Hello! The warm welcome is appreciated! I’m a lemm.ee member who’s sad to see that instance being closed. Thankfully I’ve found this fine place.
ZippyBot got the job done by sending both a DM and email.
Thanks and I’ll see you out there.
💜
For all the newcomers, Demigodrick & co do a fantastic job of looking after us all in our little corner.
For UK users, you may be better off at feddit.uk though. This instance has opted to geoblock UK (on browsers at least - apps and instance federation currently unaffected) due to the requirements of the OSA. Worth a mention.
I keep an alt on feddit.uk but still use this as my main. Where allowed, it is good practice to keep an alt elsewhere and occasionally copy your community subscriptions over to it. Saves a lot of time and panic if a lemm.ee situation arises again.
Oh, and welcome!
Thanks for welcoming us lemm.ee refugees! I picked lemmy.zip because of how similar both instances are managed. Sad to see .ee go, but happy to be here!
More the merrier* :)
*As many as we can handle, at least!
Thank you for the prompt application approval and warm welcome.
Any chance you could share how many new sign-ups you've seen since the lemm.ee announcement? Just curious, no worries if you can't.
I think in the region of 150 to 200. For us, thats quite a few :)
It was crazy how fast my application was approved in just two minutes, kudos for staying on top of it all!
A day off will do that to you sometimes :D Welcome :)
Figured as much given this announcement. Thanks!
Glad to be here. Thanks for welcoming us lemm.ee refugees.
no doubt ✨
Welcome everyone! .zip has an amazing admin team and excellent monthly updates. I landed here pretty fast after leaving R and have never felt any reason to set up an account anywhere else. If you like it after a few months, you should donate - I imagine a few hundred more active users might be some increase to resource needs.
Yeah donations are an important point - the server is coping with the current levels of traffic, but its certainly not thriving! If we are lucky enough to be chosen by a majority of .ee, we will definitely need to consider an upgrade or additional hardware.
Let us all know if it becomes a struggle. I'm always happy to pitch in.
Appreciate that, thank you 🙏
We had a slightly over-beefy server for our old needs, but now - oof
Another lemm.eefuge here. Thanks for the warm welcome.
Yet another lemm.ee refugee checking in. Thank you for the warm welcome!
Hey, welcome along :)
Lemm.ee shutting down was so unexpected for me, thank you everyone involved in taking us in.
Welcome - I am immediately jealous of your handle 😅
Thank you! Glad you like my name, and happy to be here.
Lemm.ee refugee here. I made my account over twenty-four hours ago, and was expecting that the registration will take time to be processed since at the time I made my application, this instance is among the most recommended. I was expecting the admins to be swamped. I was pleasantly surprised when I went back to my e-mails, an e-mail confirmation request was waiting, and just minutes after my confirmation, my registration was approved.
I am very thankful for the swift response, and thankful for the way this instance is ran (my primary reason choosing this over the others--it reminds me of lemm.ee in a good way).
Again, thanks!
Welcome aboard! The admin team have been flat out approving the requests (and taking time to enjoy many of the application messages!) so I'm really happy people are noticing this.
While the circumstances are rubbish, we're glad to have you here :)
I would love to see some of these - maybe as an 'editors pick' on the monthly updates. Attributed or anonymous depending on user preference if picked.
I am sure plenty of users have attempted comedy in that box, with some of them actually funny 🙃
I will certainly consider it! :D pre-warning, I am not promising many of them are good 😂
Thanks!! It's really noticeable, at least as far as I'm concerned. And I hope that even if you guys take your time, the new applicants will understand the delay (hell, perhaps even expect some delays because this is not in any way an ordinary situation).
Glad to be here too, thanks!
i hope you all enjoyed my story of me shitting my pants 😂
Really went all in on the application then, haha.
Welcome 🙂
I liiiiiive!
Thanks for hosting me!
I'm not transferring anything over. I'll rediscover things instead. Seems more fun. .ee gave me a chance to learn Lemmy. .Zip can be home.
.zip has been the best instance that I've experienced. Welcome aboard!
I'm not importing anything either, I'll let everything go with the instance.
New home, new discoveries as you said :D
Same, not looking forward to surprise furry porn until I get those blocked but whatcha gonna do?
Oh yea....well. it's something to do.
Another lemm.ee refugee here (even if I'm a lurker), thanks for welcoming us! <3
Great message !
Thanks for the warm welcome. Sad to see ee go, but look forward to taking part in this instance.
Thank you so much for the warm welcome!!
Lemm.ee was really a fantastic place, while losing it is heartbreaking to me, I fully understand the admin team reasons and I wish them all the best in their lives and future endeavors.
I can never thank them enough for what they've done for us, I hope they'll see this thread.
I chose Lemmy.zip because it seemed to me the most similar in policies and moderation, I'll do my best to make it my new home :)
Quick question before I apply for an account:
How does this instance feel about pineapple on pizza?
Hard no from me personally, same with anchovies. If forced to choose, pineapple is the lesser evil of the two.
But if I'm not eating it, it's not my business really.
I’m not a huge fan, but a friend recently ordered a pizza with pepperoni, jalapeños, spicy tomato sauce, and pineapple, and it was actually pretty good.
If I associated with skooma users, I'd probably order something like that too...
I think it's fantastic. Fun fact: the one thing that all playable Overwatch heros have in common is that they enjoy pineapple on pizza.
Do Bastion eat
probably not though I imagine he appreciates the concept of pizza
Yes, and so does Rammattra, Zenyatta, Orisa, Echo, and possibly Genji? (Does he eat?)
considering that genji is, while also very cyborg-y, a human, I imagine he does eat
That's not a fun fact at all, and also extremely unlikely.
The sweetness of cooked pineapple goes really well with the sourness of the sauce. Love it.

Hello! Just joined from lemm.ee, happy to be here! Once I get settled in I plan on donating to help keep server maintenance. I understand the value in decentralized platforms, and wish I had done so with lemm.ee (which wasn't their problem, it was moderation, but I digress).
I look forward to seeing familiar usernames here! 😁
Hey, welcome along! :)
oh boy yeah, it's me the #1927397 or something of the lemm.ee refugees, yeah. thanks btw~ hope ya guys survive more months!
What you didn't realize is that it is one person with lots of data and alts
Yet another lemm.ee refugee, thanks for taking us in! Can't wait to start my new home here ☺️
Hey, welcome! :)
Thanks for welcoming the refugees with such open arms! We appreciate it!
Hey, I'm another refugee, thanks for let me in
Glad to be here, thanks for welcoming us lemm.ee users!
More folk still wandering in, love to see it. A shame about the circumstances though.
Hope you get on well here :)
Thank you for the welcome. I chose lemmy.zip because the policy regarding defederation pleased me and the monthly update on the status of the server was great info.
I hope this instance last a bit longer than my two previous ones (vlemmy.net which disappeared overnight, then lemm.ee).
One small detail about your sidebar, you have alternative UI, that's a great plus. I would just name the software project running it next to the URL and Photon (m.lemmy.zip) is described as a mobile centric UI but it works great also on desktop (personally it's my UI of choice on desktop).
Out of curiosity, is there a way to see the communities included in the default blocks? I must have registered here before those were introduced, as I don't have them.
They are instance blocks for
hexbear.netandlemmygrad.ml.Ohh, that's what it is. i had that two blocked and many more community before i migrate my account so am a bit unclear what it is.
I was surprised to see that too, as i don't remember that from our previous defed discussions. Maybe I missed it. Since they're just default, must not have been implemented when out accounts were created
I like that it's done that way rather than by defederating, as it lets each user decide, as opposed to someone having decided for them with no way to change that.
Yeah I agree, I didn't know that was an option but it's a fine compromise. I don't usually like "default enabled", opt-outs, though when Facebook or Microsoft do it they're not transparent like this. Usually the vast majority of software users never even review the default settings but Lemmy might be different due to its user base
Hey, thanks for welcoming us in.
I'm having a little trouble on-boarding. Anytime I try to import my settings via JSON in the Import/Export Settings box, I get the following error: "Please wait a few minutes before trying to import or export settings again." The error was thrown on the first attempt and has been the same for a couple days. Happens in both Firefox and Chrome.
Hey, might be worth trying over a vpn if you have access to one, otherwise leave it with us and I'll come back to you when I have an answer :) I think we need to restart lemmy to clear rate limits due to lots of new accounts.
Good call, that did it. Don't know why I didn't think of that. Thanks!
Edit to add: If it helps with others, I'm US-based, VPN went through Netherlands just now.
No worries, glad it worked!
Thanks for the warm welcome!
Can we have a list of the default blocks (perhaps divided into political vs NSFW)? I have dozens of my own blocks which I had already imported before knowing you added some by default.
Hey, welcome along! I've updated the post to include them but its currently hexbear and lemmygrad that get blocked on account creation.
Heya. It's Zathras from lemm.ee. Thanks for adopting all of us who are migrating. Cheers!
"I am Zathras from lemmy.zip, you have met Zathras from lemm.ee - is different Zathras.
listen! Zathras. Zathras. different, yes?"
Sad to see lemm.ee go, but welcome to all the new folk!
Thanks for welcoming us refugees!
I was going to fall back to my oldest account on lemmy.one but that instance is closing within 90 days as well.
I'll be donating later today on my lunch break!
I migrated to Lemm.ee because of Lemmy.one shutting down. Now I'm afraid I might be cursed.
No no no, that's me, don't worry. I might migrate over there! (do worry)
Thank you for the warm welcome and the very quick approval!
sagan these balls gotem
welcome :)
Not sure I got that, but thank you!
it's a derivative of the ligma joke if you're familiar with that. don't worry about it :D
I'm definitely not :D
Thank you! Happy to be here😉
Hi, I'm thinking of maybe creating an account on lemmy.zip.
What I read in the legal docs looks promising. I have one question however: I do not see a proper imprint at lemmy.zip . Is the site and the domain privately owned? Not in a foundation or anything? If yes, are there plans in place in the case of the site owner stepping down from the project? Like transfer to another admin? Or could something like on lemm.ee with a closure happen as well at some point hypothetically?
Hey! They are privately owned yes (by me) and currently not in a foundation - donation amounts have never really warranted the cost or complexity of setting anything up.
However, all admins have a level of access to the backend of the site, including SSH, Cloudflare, Hetzner etc. so that the site can be maintained even if I were to vanish.
If I step down, there is sufficient technical knowledge (and equally as importantly, admins with the right ethos!) to keep the site running and to take on the ownership.
I do have a plan to move things into some form of non-profit/community structure when it becomes warranted. That does mean doxxing myself though, so I'm holding off until necessary :)
Great to hear!
My immortality begins now I’ve been told. Queue Highlander theme music!
I'm glad to be here tbh. I considered moving to either here or blahaj a few times just to get away from the biggest instances, but I had no issues with lemm.ee so I never did in the end. But here's my push I guess!
Hey, welcome :)
Thanks for the heads up about the default blocks, I didn't notice that and not too happy about it. But I'm having a great experience overall so far.
I think it is a great compromise between defederation and being more palatable to less extremely minded people. Anyone who wants to can still unblock the instances, and this way their users at least get to show up in outside communities and posts for everyone.
Just made my account, thanks for having us!
Welcome! 👋
It’s weird to see Lemmy.ee shut down as that was the first instance I joined. Moving here before all this happened is a strange coincidence.
Hey! Another .ee refugee here! Thank you all for keeping us alive in these trying times.
I really wish for here to be my long term home. If there is anything we can do to help on top of donations, I would be happy to participate :)
Welcome, welcome. Excellent snag of a 3char username.
Mosey around, make yourself at home. Donations can be made on Open Collective and Ko-Fi.
Thank you so much for let me in
Welcome!
Hi there! I'm investigating places to land when lemm.ee shuts down and lemmy.zip has a great defed policy and looks like a good place. One QQ is, will I be able to connect to the instance with a VPN? The pinned thread on this post seems to suggest it's fine (try uploading the JSON with a VPN) but I want to be sure, as I don't see any mention of this in the privacy policy or other legal docs. I know some instances block them, and I understand it's to prevent abuse and ban evasion, however I use one all the time for enhanced privacy so it's fairly important to me.
Thanks so much!
Hey - no issues with VPN. You might get more cloudflare challenges, but we won't block you! We have no plans to enable a block either.
Awesome thanks for that, and for welcoming us. Will get my act together and sign up SoonTM : )
I can happily verify this (Mullvad). Without a VPN, I can't even be here - so it is all good :D
Based admin.
Hi, I am a bit curious about your Piefed instance, can I use my Lemmy.zip account for it?
You can't use it directly, but you can create a new account there and then import your Lemmy profile over to it and that takes your subscriptions and profile data over. You would lose your post history though.
Ah yeah I figured, well, I am gonna wait and see from here how things develop then, I mostly browse Lemmy from Summit for Lemmy 😅 (which I think it has piefed support).
Unfortunate that the chosen url is a .zip url.
.zip is ripe for malicious actors. I block access to all .zip URLs on my home network.
So, .zip is so bad that you block the entire domain on your home network yet you're here commenting?
.. just wow ...
It's a genuine concern, if a bit overkill. On release, .zip domains were quickly seized upon by bad actors land grabbing anything they could roll into a phishing attack. If you've got folk on your network that may be prone to that, then blocking the TLD is an effective bludgeon to the problem.
Blocking is unlikely to cause issues for the Average Internet User, due to the lack of popularity in mainstream services that use .zip. There are always ways to make exceptions where needed - a restrictive policy with exceptions is more secure than a permissive policy with selective blocks, as it prevents new malicious .zip domains getting through. It's a security cat and mouse game otherwise.
As for how they are here - I guess it's through federation with .world, so they're not accessing .zip directly.
I also block .zip domains, but at work rather than home. No complaints yet.
basically a built in stopgap to prevent to many users from joining this one instance lol
Thanks for the detailed explanation.
I understand the technical point of view and yes, they definitively wrote on their lemmy.world "copy" of this thread given how the fediverse work, tho they should be able to see which instance each post originates from.
I most probably worded my answer very poorly, I was at a loss of words, not only because of what I perceived as incoherent behaviour, but also because of the circumstances.
I mean, I'm a lemm.ee "refugee" like many in this thread, I registered here only 2 days ago, still very sad for the loss of .ee, the admins wrote a fantastic welcome post for all of us, and of all the things they could say they come here to remark what they think of the domain? Seriously ?!?
Welcome - bumping into a lot of ee folk and it's great to see you all making new homes. Just a shame about the circumstances.
Sure they were a bit blunt, but some people just are. Bit cheeky of them to drop in from outside and chat shit in our home community though, agreed there 😅
Thank you! :)
It seems more like a issue with applications honestly
DNS shouldn't be the source of a compromise
And a TLD shouldn't be so easy to mistake for one of the most recognisable filetypes ever, yet here we are. Well made apps discern between a zip file and a zip web address without issue. The problem, as usual, is in the human element:
holidayphotos2025.zip,2025ProductData.zipor whatever hook you're going for.Having .zip in the string and in the link visible on hover could be all that is needed to 'sell' it to a user that makes a cursory glance before clicking - nevermind the ones that just click anyway. Plenty of folk have fallen for more obvious traps than that, so it's a winner for a bad actor. Any trick that lends legitimacy to a scam increases the chance of success. Users savvy enough to check but not enough to spot the discrepancy may also have more data interesting to an attacker.
Blocking .zip TLDs wholesale at DNS level kills this even if the first and hardest hurdle (getting the user to click) is cleared. I'll concede that it is an edge case in the grand scheme of things, but why leave the hole open when it is so easily plugged?
I still don't see how that is an issue. If someone clicks on a link from a email and then gets compromised there is a bigger issue.
Throw enough people at something, and one of them will fail. The more people, the higher the chance.
Perfect people in a perfect world would not need fire extinguishers, seatbelts, helmets, endpoint protection software, or TLD level blocks. You can try to train the problem out of people, but the threat still exists, mistakes can be made, and the next 0day might be just around the corner.
I'm not a fan of sorting people problems out with tech based solutions either - I see your point. The pragmatist in me will take that over dealing with the fallout of user error though.
I found this post through another instance.
I'm not sure why you are putting this here
