You can use any client you want guys . Lemmy wins

Probably the first comment that doesn't bash on anyone since this whole thing started.

lemdro.id

Don't forget Connect! It's probably the most complete Lemmy app right now. The "About Instance" function is amazing for getting a list of communities on a given instance with actual working links for subscribing.

It is not open source. Apparently the creator is considering making it open source once he's cleaned up the code a bit. For whatever that's worth.

I honestly don't get the "gotta clean up the code first" stance. Like sure, you don't want to publish complete spaghetti code without comments. But like, it can't be that bad right?
Besides, the point of open source is collaboration and so he doesn't have to do all the "clean up" by himself.

2
Havaldreply
lemmy.world

Yeah, I totally agree. I suspect that some people use it as an excuse because they don't actually want to publish the code.

3

I feel it's used as a minipulation tactic.

  1. FOSS people don't want to use closed source software.
  2. Lie and say you'll "consider" open source-ing later even though you have no intention of ever doing so.
  3. Profit.

  1. Tap the three dots overflow menu:

  1. Select About Instance:

  1. Select View Communities:

2

Thanks. I found that earlier. I tried to edit comment. There's a feature on my app that says "add user comment"... I thought that equaled an edited comment that indicated 'I found the answer".

Wait, what's wrong with Jerboa? I'm using Jerboa and it's been great so far

30

Jerboa doesn't autoplay gifs (or didn't when I used it), that what made me stick to liftoff and I don't regret it.

6
lemmy.ca

It kept crashing randomly for me.

I tried all the apps I memed out at some point or another (and we're all Reddit refugees I presume).

I had frequent stability issues with Jerboa, switched to liftoff, which was far more stable. UI wasn't the prettiest, but reasonably nice. Gave sync a brief spin, wasn't very impressed, and ads/data collection wasn't appealing. I stuck to liftoff till I found infinity had been ported to lemmy.

I'd used infinity for Reddit for years, same experience on Lemmy now, loving it!

I'm still waiting for Boost for Lemmy to come out. Maybe I'll try Infinity though if it's a great as you say

8

I'm on the same bandwagon, boost was n1 but infinity n2... So... If they take too long I might give it a go.

3
reddthat.com

I've been flipping between Jerboa and liftoff. Unless I'm missing something Jerboa doesn't have the downvote arrow. Not that I ever downvote anyway. But besides that, I think I like the feel of Jerboa better.

Sort options seem better in liftoff though (again, unless I'm missing something in Jerboa).

I'll probably give infinity a try now because of this post.

2
reddthat.com

Well, I went searching for it again, just to downvote you. 😉 But still can't find it.

Beats me. 🤷

Voyager is nice, but since it's a native app I can't download pictures anymore, so I switched to infinity and got used to it...

2

Yea the only way to do it from Voyagers native app right now is to open the link in your browser. You can hit the share button on Voyager and send the post link to your browser.

This feature can still be added to native apps. RiF used to have a simple hold and save feature. I hope they add that feature soon. I imagine we aren't the only ones who noticed.

artemis.camp

Tried Jerboa, Sync and Thunder (and Artemis + web app for kbin).

Sync seems the most polished because it came from Reddit, but the fact that you can't post in Sync right now makes it really hard to dig in and dedicate to it.

Thunder feels like a more polished version of Jerboa, but I'm not a huge fan of the Material You design and big iconography in any of these apps (I came from RIF, so I'm used to basically early 2010s UI, lol).

Artemis is unevalautable right now given its severe alpha state.

And of course, lemmy.world is having connection issues, so none of the apps really "work" right now, no fault of their own. At least Thunder seems to cache old data, since it's populated when I open it, versus Sync which can't make a connection.

Just migrated my main account from Lemmy world, not their fault but there's too many users in that instance, which is causing downtimes too often

3

Please excuse my maybe stupid question, but did you manage to move your account from lemmy.world to another instance? If so, would you please share how you did that?

3

Not stupid, it isn't straight forward, there's a python script that helps with transferring subscriptions, posts and comments can't be transfered though

Check out GitHub.com/wescode/lemmy_migrate

For what it's worth, posting from sync should be available this week.

2
lemmy.world

Was using infinity on Reddit and was waiting for a good fork for lemmy. Really feels like home now.

12

Jerboa has been criticality underrated since its first or second post-exodus update. I've tried almost all of these (and Connect) and other than when .world is having issues but still reachable by Voyager, I use Jerboa.

Depending on who I ask here, Sync is either a caveman brained or enlightened choice.

sync is just a more polished app since it came from reddit. but infinity is the same, and boost will be the same too.

chose the app you like most and support its dev.

(posted from sync)

For those of us that have used Sync for a long time it has a lot of ui/ux options and we know how to find them.

5

I had an hard time igonring the slight delay at animations when using it on my phone. I'm usually use it on PC though.

Honestly my biggest complaint is that so far only Sync seems to have a built-in browser. I don't like having things redirected to my browser.

Infinity for Lemmy has the option to open links with an in-app browser or with an external one.

5

Oh that's awesome! Do you know if there's a way to flip the thumbnails from the right side to the left?

1
discuss.tchncs.de

I started with jerboa a few weeks ago and really wanted to like it most, but then I tried connect and never looked back, it was so good and polished before all the other apps were even barely usable. I haven't found a single issue with it so far.

5
lemmy.ca

Connect is my favorite so far, but I can't download images or videos with it 😐 I can ask to download things, but then they just never show up. Otherwise pretty happy with it.

2
discuss.tchncs.de

Yeah I've had a few downloads timeout or disappear but I can usually tell if the little bubble doesn't pop up that says 'file saved'. In that case I've been opening things in my external browser. Most of the time it works fine for me though.

2
lemmy.ml

I am in love with infinity too. Only problem I have, it lacks some Lemmy features, adding pictures to comments or showing down votes etc.

Liftoff & Voyager are my companions.

5

Infinity for Lemmy is out already? If that's true, you won't have to wait too long for all the features you want.

2
lemm.ee

How does Infinity compare to Sync ? I'm considering switching clients since my having paid for Reddit Sync Pro does not entitle me to Lemmy Sync's "remove ads" (I still have to pay 16e, which is way too much).

5
lemmy.ca

I wasn't very impressed with sync when I tried it out after all the hype: maybe because I've been a long time infinity user. I can't give a fair comparison since I haven't given sync too much of a chance, but here's what I like about infinity:

  • FOSS, on fdroid (fdroid >> play store for me)
  • nice UI - adjustable font sizes, top comment scrolling
  • multiple account support
  • dark mode is pretty dark (yeah, I really like dark mode)
  • fairly stable
2

Thanks for taking the time to write this. I'll give it a shot

1

I am using Infinity. It has been working great so far. It is one of the most themeable Lemmy clients I know of.

5
infosec.pub

Using Jerboa still. Nice to have it from F-Droids official repo. Did use Infinity for Reddit before I deleted my account around aweek before the protest. But only the Reddit version is there currently

Is there any way to set default home screen to "subscribed" instead of "local"?

2
Shieldtoadreply
sh.itjust.works

Go to settings. Then pick 'username' settings (for you it will say snowraven settings). Then scroll down to default listing type and you can choose between all, local or subscribed.

3

It's on the Izzysoft F-Droid repo: https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/index/apk/eu.toldi.infinityforlemmy

The source code is found at: https://codeberg.org/Bazsalanszky/Infinity-For-Lemmy/releases

The Infinity for Lemmy sublemmy is found here: ![email protected]

and the developer is u/[email protected]

Though the name might change since its a fork and not done by the same developer: https://lemy.lol/post/2958776

I am either hoping for it to stay the same, or for it to change to Eternity.

1

Rn the state of Infinity for Lemmy feels mostly complete (aside from a few expected bugs built from being a fork working with a totally different API), but besides that, the app is absolutely fire. I was a heavy IfR user in the past and it even convinced me to make an account (I was mostly a lurker) but when spez starting treating 3rd party devs like shit I gtfo there, just hoping that docille or another dev would have forked infinity and yet, here we are.

4
lemm.ee

Guess you never tried Thunder

2

I can't remember why I skipped thunder, I think it's because it doesn't autoplay gifs without opening it.

Also, whenever I opened it I saw it connect to so many servers that it made me worried a bit (probably overthink it), but it's not the home screen itself because obviously liftoff for example shows the same and doesn't connect to the same servers thunder did.

Edit: maybe liftoff pull the content from my instance while thunder take it straight from the source?
