At least this is the vegan option. They used to be made from cat snouts.

I think you misunderstood what people meant when they talked it being part of a pussy

20

Is that why I can't seem to find it on my laptop? Skill issue?

25

The people who call it that just appreciate how easy it is to find.

Hey, dells used to be decent. I thing my latitude 5290 is a better investment then a x280 (since it has upgradable ram and practically same build quality).

Thinkpads used to be quality machines, but my last two laptops broke after just a year. One was keyboard, other was mouse pad.

Is it really that hard to put quality components in parts that are physically touched a lot?

Im going for some other brand next time but they all kind of suck now it seems.

It's not hard, but the more laptop lasts, the longer it will take before you buy a new one.

My 2017 MacBook pro, the shittiest MacBook version of the 21rst century, functioned well and was my primary computer until a couple months ago.

Good to know!

Currently I run a secondhand Dell Latitude, it was well cared for and is in a great condition, even the battery capacity sits at 94%. Runs Linux like a charm. Couldn't be happier about it and hope it lasts me a while.

I'm not that familiar with newer ThinkPads as I only ever used a L540 and a T420, but can't you just replace the trackpad or keyboard if it breaks?

5

I have a X220 and a T14 Gen 2 (11th gen Intel core) and the quality is night and day. Also they introduced cheaper models like an E series, the L series and those have even worse materials or QC.

That's not the point. A laptop should last more than a year.

I probably can, yeah. Its just that it feels like I lose trust in a brand where such things break so easily.

I know its not comparable, but my external keyboard and mouse has worked for probably 6 years now without a single problem. Why is it so hard to put quality components in a laptop. Seems like cost savings. And those machines are really expensive.

Sadly Apple is the only company making good laptop hardware it seems. Just have to deal with a huge price tag and reduced compatibility!

Intriguing... How well does debian work with an arm CPU?

1

I'm using an arm CPU and it works really well. There's even a lot of Flatpaks that support arm to fill in any gaps. Debian even has a version supporting RISC-V

I got a framework, which is built around quality parts, repairability, and upgradeability. Theoretically it's the last laptop I will ever buy.

I liked the concept but the reviews have not been amazing. I hope you like it, because I would love to have one if its actually good.

3

No complaints so far! What did the reviews say? I'm using a 16 with the graphics module.

I wish I could stick one of these in my desktop keyboard.

A fully mechanical keyboard with a nub between W and S so that I can play videogames with a joystick and a mouse, for superior aiming AND moving.

Maybe I could design and print a WASD(QE) section/assembly with custom keycaps with a gap and install a nub as a mod.

13

I used to have a desktop keyboard with the nipple in the traditional middle of the keyboard configuration so your fingers could stay on the home row but something about it was off maybe the acceleration or something I'm sure I could've fixed it in software if I were smarter but it never just worked like the Thinkpad ones

5

I would be fine with just having pressure sensitive WASD keys to control my speed beyond forward and forward but faster/slower, depending on what shift does. It's insane how much a keyboard with pressure sensitivity costs tho. It might be cheaper to build my own.

2

Wouldn't it be 'simple' with hall effect sensors? Those seem to be pretty commonplace nowadays.

2

Went all through college with a thinkpad that only had the eraser. I still can’t use a typical touchpad.

5

pro tip if you don't want to buy another cap (or you don't live in europe/US and only way to buy is by buying enough to open your own trackpad cap's store):

You can remove the cap, put a piece of soft paper or cotton inside the cap's hole and it will give you more leverage.

It is basically the same effect of using a taller cap.

You will need to tweak the amount of cotton/tissue to your taste, but I can use my trackpad with 3.0 sensitivity.

manwhile, before I mad this "DIWhy", I had to crank up to 10 and even that was not enough. Also the mouse basically teleported across screen with minimal touch (but still huge pressure to pain the tip of my finger)
